Changes in community socioeconomic status and racial distribution associated with gonorrhea rates: an analysis at the community level.

BACKGROUND: Gonorrhea persists despite nationwide disease control measures. Research has not focused on the longitudinal impact of community characteristics on gonorrhea. The authors assessed the association between community demographic and socioeconomic changes and gonorrhea rates. METHODS: Gonorrhea incident cases reported in 1992-1993 and 2001-2002 were aggregated at the census tract level in New York State exclusive of New York City and then matched to the census data. Census tract characteristics were obtained from the 1990 and 2000 decennial censuses and adjusted for changes in geograp

The causal impact of urbanicity on neighbourhood psychosis prevalence.

There is considerable evidence of elevated psychosis rates in more urban settings. However, the urbanicity effect is confounded with other neighbourhood contextual effects, such as from deprivation and crime. To assess the nature of the underlying urbanicity effect, removing distorting effects of confounders, we consider a novel method to assessing causality in spatial applications: a propensity weight approach, with weights obtained by entropy optimization, and adjusting for the spatial overlap in the urbanicity effect via a bivariate exposure approach. The application is to the effect of urb

The Fall of Violence and the Reconfiguration of Urban Neighborhoods.

Over the past few decades, U.S. cities have changed dramatically, largely because of two major trends: the fall of violence and the rise of urban inequality. Despite the attention given to each of these trends, little research has assessed how they are related to each other. This study is the first to generate causal evidence on the impact of violent crime on economic residential segregation. We document the effect of the crime drop on economic segregation in 500 U.S. cities between 1990 and 2010, using exogenous shocks to city crime rates to identify causal effects. We find that declining vio

The Impoverishing Effect of Tobacco Use in Indonesia.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking households in Indonesia diverted a significant share of their budget to tobacco. Tobacco expenditure is deemed unproductive, as it crowds out resources from essential commodities and increases health care expenditure driven by tobacco-induced diseases. Therefore, despite having adequate resources, some smoking families in Indonesia may spend less on basic needs, which inadvertently puts their standard of living below the poverty line. AIMS AND METHODS: Employing data from 2021 (March) Indonesia's Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS), this research aims to quantify the impoveri

Determinants of health poverty vulnerability of rural households in Jiangxi Province, China: an analysis based on risk theory.

BACKGROUND: Although China has made significant progress on poverty alleviation over the past decade, health-related poverty remains an urgent issue in the rural areas of less developed regions, such as central and western China. On the basis of risk theory, this study investigated the determinants of health poverty vulnerability of rural households lifted out of poverty in central China. METHODS: First-hand survey data collected from a convenience sample of 255 previously impoverished households in rural areas of Jiangxi Province in central China in 2024 were used in this study. In this stud

Burden & pattern of illnesses among the tribal communities in central India : A report from a community health programme.

Tribals are the most marginalised social category in the country and there is little and scattered information on the actual burden and pattern of illnesses they suffer from. This study provides information on burden and pattern of diseases among tribals, and whether these can be linked to their nutritional status, especially in particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTG) seen at a community health programme being run in the tribal areas of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh States of India. This community based programme, known as Jan Swasthya Sahyog (JSS) has been serving people in over 2500 v

Owned and unowned dog population estimation, dog management and dog bites to inform rabies prevention and response on Lombok Island, Indonesia.

Although Indonesia has been rabies-infected since at least the 1880s, some islands remain rabies-free, such as Lombok. However, due to its adjacency to rabies-infected islands such as Bali and Flores, there is considerable risk of a rabies incursion. As part of a rabies risk assessment project, surveys were conducted to estimate the size of the dog population and to describe dog management practices of households belonging to different ethnic groups. A photographic-recapture method was employed and the number of unowned dogs was estimated. A total of 400 dog owning households were interviewed,

Marital instability after midlife.

"Divorce in later life has been shown to produce dramatic declines in the economic, psychological, and physical well-being of marital partners. This study examines the prevalence and determinants of marital disruption after midlife using Becker's theory of marital instability. Using recent Canadian national data, the marital outcomes of women and men who were married as of age 40 are tracked across the remaining years of the marriage. Cox proportional hazard regression models indicate stabilizing effects of the duration of the marriage, the age at first marriage, the presence of young children

Climate vulnerability of rural households in the central exposed coastal areas of Bangladesh.

Climate change is a significant concern for Bangladesh, and coastal areas have been recognized as one of the most vulnerable regions. However, the effect of specific climate stressors has not been analysed since most existing studies depend on the livelihood vulnerability index. This limits a comprehensive understanding of how exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity vary by climate aspects. The research employed a mixed-methods approach to fill this gap, and data were collected by a survey of 370 rural households in Kalapara and Taltoli, followed by FGD and KII. Exposure, sensitivity, and

A study on analysing sociospatial distribution and equity in access to urban parks in Bengaluru, India.

BACKGROUND: Given the effect of urbanisation on land use, allocation, and implementation of urban green spaces, we attempt to analyse the sociospatial distribution and equity in access to urban parks in Bengaluru, India, also known as the garden city of India. METHODS: Geospatial method was used for mapping the park's distribution and measuring the accessibility using road network data. To understand equitable access to the parks, four socioeconomic parameters from 2011 census (ie, population density, children aged 6 years or younger, proxy wealth index, and the Scheduled Caste population) we

Non-adoption decision of biogas in rural Pakistan: use of multinomial logit model.

In 2009, Pakistan introduced a subsidized biogas program to disseminate clean and affordable energy in rural areas. However, the adoption rate did not appear as expected. Therefore, the present study aims to examine the determinants behind the non-adoption of biogas digesters. Detailed information via a structured questionnaire was obtained from biogas adopters and non-adopters, and analyses were performed in two levels. Initially, the study used the multinomial logit regression to elicit the non-adoption behavior. Results depicted family size, risk aversion, cook education (women), kitchen (i

Identifying vulnerability to poverty and its determinants among older adults in empty-nest households: an empirical analysis from rural Shandong Province, China.

Although extreme poverty has been eradicated in China, older adults in empty-nest households may risk falling into or returning to poverty in the future. Previous studies on poverty alleviation had focused on the measurement of ex-post poverty at a particular time. Few studies have assessed households' vulnerability to poverty from a forward-looking perspective. This study aims to identify the vulnerability to poverty and its determinants among rural empty-nest households with older adults. A total of 1951 rural empty-nest households with older adults followed for 1 year were included in the a

Sanitation, financial incentives and health spillovers: A cluster randomised trial.

Poor sanitation and its consequent negative health outcomes continue to plague the developing world. Drawing on the finding that financial subsidies have changed behaviour in other health contexts, we conducted a clustered randomised trial in 160 villages in Lao PDR to evaluate the effectiveness of combining financial incentives with Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), a widely-conducted behaviour change program. Villages were randomly allocated to four groups, all of which received CLTS but differed in the type of subsidy offered (none, household, village or both). Using data from a random

Moving beyond living arrangements: the role of family and friendship ties in promoting mental health for urban and rural older adults in China.

Objective: This study examines the interplay among living arrangements, social networks, and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults. Methods: Data are derived from the 2014 baseline survey of the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS), which provides a sample of older Chinese who had been married and had children (N = 7,662). This study examines the association between living arrangements and depressive symptoms (measured as CES-D scale, 0-18) of older adults, and addresses the moderating role of social networks (measured as family ties and friendship ties, 0-15) on this perceiv

Socioeconomic inequalities in residential greenness: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Residential greenness has been linked to multiple health benefits. However, its distribution across socioeconomic groups has not been systematically quantified. OBJECTIVE: The aims are to: (i) characterize the magnitude of socioeconomic inequalities in the distribution of residential greenness, as measured by NDVI, across urban populations; (ii) evaluate the consistency of these inequalities across geographic regions and investigate potential sources of between-study heterogeneity; and (iii) synthesize existing evidence to identify knowledge gaps and inform equity-oriented urban a
