From Counseling Microaggressions to Substance Use: Indirect Pathways Through Help-Seeking and Psychological Distress.

Racial-ethnic minoritized individuals face persistent disparities in mental health service utilization, which are shaped by structural and interpersonal racism. This study examined whether racial microaggressions in counseling were indirectly associated with substance use through their impact on help-seeking intentions and psychological distress. A serial mediation model was tested using self-report data from a community-based sample of racial-ethnic minoritized adults (N = 223). Results indicated that prior experiences of racial microaggressions in counseling were associated with lower help-s

Reframing Dental Anxiety: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Its Role in Phobia Treatment-A Narrative Review.

Dental phobia is a disabling yet underdiagnosed condition that prevents many patients from seeking essential oral healthcare, leading to avoidable pain, disease progression, and reduced quality of life. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most widely supported psychological intervention for specific phobias and has demonstrated significant efficacy in reducing dental anxiety and avoidance. This narrative review synthesizes recent evidence on CBT applications for phobia management, with particular emphasis on dental settings. In addition to reviewing established mechanisms of CBT, this pa

Postpartum Depression Epidemiology, Risk Factors, Diagnosis, and Management: An Appraisal of the Current Knowledge and Future Perspectives.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a severe mental health condition that affects women following childbirth and is marked by persistent sadness, anxiety, fatigue, and difficulty functioning. Unlike the temporary "baby blues", PPD is more severe and long-lasting, potentially leading to negative consequences for mother and child. Globally, PPD impacts approximately 10-20% of postpartum women, with prevalence influenced by genetic, hormonal, psychological, and socio-environmental factors. Early detection is crucial, with screening tools such as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) commonly

Psychometric Properties of the Checklist of Experiences of Psychological Abuse to the Couple in Adolescents and Young Adults.

In Ibero-America, interest in the evaluation and prevention of violence in young couples has been increasing. However, there are not enough Spanish-speaking standardized questionnaires. The psychometric analyses of the Checklist of Experiences of Psychological Abuse to the Couple (CEPA) are presented as a subset of the Checklist of Experiences of Abuse to the Couple. Overall, 1,505 adolescents participated; 828 were women, and 677 were men, aged 14 to 21 years old. A confirmatory factor analysis with the Structural Equation Modeling Software version 6.2 (EQS) was performed to consider differen

The Inner Working of Trauma: A Qualitative Assessment of Experiences of Trauma, Intergenerational Family Dynamics, and Psychological Well-Being in Women With HIV in South Carolina.

Women with HIV are more likely to have a history of traumatic and stressful life experiences. The current study examines experiences of traumatic and stressful life events, issues co-occurring with experiences of trauma, and intergenerational family dynamics regarding trauma and psychological well-being in women with HIV. The study was guided by the theoretical approach of an integrative translational model that incorporates trauma-related factors into a psychosocial framework. Data were collected from interviews with 20 women with HIV and analyzed for thematic categories. Thematic analysis in

A test of the core process account of psychopathology in a heterogenous clinical sample of anxiety and depression: A case of the blind men and the elephant?

Many cognitive and behavioral processes, such as selective attention to threat, self-focused attention, safety-seeking behaviors, worry and thought suppression, have their foundations in research on anxiety disorders. Yet, they are now known to be transdiagnostic, i.e. shared across a wide range of psychological disorders. A more pertinent clinical and theoretical question is whether these processes are themselves distinct, or whether they reflect a shared 'core' process that maintains psychopathology. The current study utilized a treatment-seeking clinical adult sample of 313 individuals with

Violence against Women: An Exploration of the Physical and Mental Health Trends among Immigrant and Refugee Women in Canada.

Violence against women is a serious health and social problem for women worldwide. Researchers have investigated the broad physical and mental health consequences of violence against women but few have focused on immigrant and refugee women. We assessed the history of violence and the impairment of physical and mental health among 60 women participants from the Iranian and Sri Lankan Tamil communities in Toronto, Canada. Our survey findings revealed that the participants had experienced various types of violence throughout their lifespan, with psychological abuse by a spouse/partner occurring

Bioethics for clinicians: 14. Ethics and genetics in medicine.

Information about a patient's inherited risk of disease has important ethical and legal implications in clinical practice. Because genetic information is by nature highly personal yet familial, issues of confidentiality arise. Counselling and informed consent before testing are important in view of the social and psychological risks that accompany testing, the complexity of information surrounding testing, and the fact that effective interventions are often not available. Follow-up counselling is also important to help patients integrate test results into their lives and the lives of their rel

Barriers to the use of exposure therapy by psychologists treating anxiety, obsessive-compuslive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder in an Australian sample.

BACGROUND: Exposure therapy is a core component of the evidence-based treatment of anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite this, many clinicians fail to use exposure therapy in clinical practice, with research highlighting a number of potential barriers. Those findings raise serious concerns regarding the effective dissemination and delivery of evidence-based treatments that in turn have a major impact on client care and cost-effectiveness of psychological interventions. AIMS: The present study aims to examine barriers to the use of expo

Heterotopic gastric mucosa in the cervical oesophagus (inlet patch) and globus pharyngeus--an under-recognised association.

Globus pharyngeus is a symptom commonly encountered in ENT practice. The usual complaint is that of the sensation of a ball or lump in the throat generally unaccompanied by dysphagia. This sensation is often more pronounced when taking an 'empty swallow'. The precise mechanism of this remains enigmatic in many cases. Irritant factors such as gastroesophageal reflux, postnasal drip and excessive throat clearing may be contributory factors as may be stress and psychological influences. Although gastric type mucosa occupying the cervical oesophagus has been long recognised, mainly in the speciali

AGA Clinical Practice Update on Management of Chronic Gastrointestinal Pain in Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction: Expert Review.

DESCRIPTION: This expert review summarizes approaches to management of pain in disorders of gut-brain interaction. This review focuses specifically on approaches to pain that persist if first-line therapies aimed at addressing visceral causes of pain are unsuccessful. The roles of a therapeutic patient-provider relationship, nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic therapies, and avoidance of opioids are discussed. METHODS: This was not a formal systematic review but was based on a review of the literature to provide best practice advice statements. No formal rating of the quality of evidence or st

Nurse-led continuity-oriented family support across the adult ICU trajectory: a systematic review and meta-analysis of PICS-F-related outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Family members of adult ICU patients are at risk of post-intensive care syndrome-family (PICS-F), but the psychological effects and optimal timing of nurse-led support remain uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate nurse-led, continuity-oriented family support for PICS-F-related psychological outcomes and explore differences by intervention phase and nurse type. METHODS: PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to May 2026. Randomized and quasi-experimental studies were eligible if they evaluated nurse-led family support in

Psychological interventions for mental health in adults with multiple long-term conditions: A scoping review and evolution of the evidence base.

BACKGROUND: Managing multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs) within individuals is a key global public health priority. Psychological interventions are effective in improving mental health outcomes in single-condition populations, yet the evidence for adults with MLTCs remains scarce. This scoping review aimed to map existing evidence on psychological interventions for people with MLTCs, highlight literature gaps and offer recommendations for future research, practice, and policy. METHODS: The pre-registered review follows Arksey & O'Malley's (2005) framework and is reported in line with the PR

The mediating role of psychological birth trauma in association between childbirth satisfaction and the desire to avoid pregnancy among Iranian postpartum women.

OBJECTIVE: Iran's declining fertility rate is a major demographic concern. The desire to avoid pregnancy (DAP) is a key predictor of future fertility. While dissatisfaction with childbirth care and psychological birth trauma are known to negatively impact future fertility decisions, their specific pathways to influencing the desire to avoid future pregnancy remain unclear. This study therefore aimed to examine the relationship between mothers' satisfaction with childbirth care and their desire to avoid subsequent pregnancy, while investigating the mediating effect of childbirth-related psychol
