Perspectives on clinical guidelines for severe behavioural problems in children across Europe: a qualitative study with mental health clinicians.

Clinical guidelines for severe behavioural problems (SBPs) in children have recently been developed in several European countries. However, questions emerged regarding their applicability to practice. Our study aimed to provide a first European insight into guidelines' fitness-for-purpose by exploring mental health clinicians' familiarity with, use and perceived value of guidelines for SBPs in children. Participants included 161 clinicians, primarily psychiatrists, from 24 countries. Clinicians completed a semi-structured qualitative questionnaire on existing SBPs guidelines and development of

Reducing neuropsychiatric symptoms in persons with dementia and associated burden in family caregivers using tailored activities: Design and methods of a randomized clinical trial.

Among over 5million people in the USA with dementia, neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are almost universal, occurring across disease etiology and stage. If untreated, NPS can lead to significant morbidity and mortality including increased cost, distress, depression, and faster disease progression, as well as heightened burden on families. With few pharmacological solutions, identifying nonpharmacologic strategies is critical. We describe a randomized clinical trial, the Dementia Behavior Study, to test the efficacy of an activity program to reduce significant existing NPS and associated caregiv

Rectal Prolapse in Children: Significance and Management.

Rectal prolapse is a herniation of the rectum through the anus. It is rare in children. When it does occur, it is usually prior to 4 years of age and due to anatomical variants. A few conditions predispose children to rectal prolapse, the most common being constipation. Cystic fibrosis used to be commonly associated with rectal prolapse, but with the advent of cystic fibrosis newborn screening, this association is no longer as frequently seen. Many recent case reports, detailed in this chapter, describe conditions previously unknown to be associated with rectal prolapse. Management is usually

Pronouns in marital interaction.

Recent studies in social psychology have found that the frequency of certain words in people's speech and writing is related to psychological aspects of their personal health. We investigated whether counts of "self" and "other" pronouns used by 59 couples engaged in a problem-solving discussion were related to indices of marital health. One spouse in each couple had a diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder or panic disorder with agoraphobia; 50% of the patients and 40% of their spouses reported marital dissatisfaction. Regardless of patients' diagnostic status, spouses who used more secon

Social-cognitive processes in preschool boys with and without oppositional defiant disorder.

The social-cognitive characteristics of 88 preschool boys with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and 80 nondisruptive boys were assessed 3 times over a 2-year period. Three questions were addressed: (1) Do social-cognitive processes (encoding, attribution, problem solving, and response evaluation) distinguish clinic-referred preschool boys from peers without behavior problems? (2) What is the relation between preschoolers' social-cognitive processes and observed problem behavior? (3) Are the social-cognitive processes of clinic boys with ODD influenced by comorbidity with Attention Deficit H…

Characteristics of school children who are choosy eaters.

Choosiness, manifested in refusal of foods, eating little, and disinterest in food, was studied with regard to prevalence, stability, sociodemographic characteristics, health problems, weight, and associated problem behaviors in a sample of 240 Swedish primary school children. Questionnaires were used, and data on sociodemographic variables, health problems, weight, and height were collected from child health-care and school health records. Choosiness was present in one third of the children, but only 8% showed choosy behavior both at home and in school. The choosy children had no more health …

An fMRI study of cognitive control in problem gamers.

A small proportion of video game players develop uncontrolled gaming behavior. A dysfunctional cognitive control circuit may explain this excessive behavior. Therefore, the current study investigated whether problem gamers are characterized by deficits in various aspects of cognitive control (inhibitory control, error processing, attentional control) by measuring brain activation using functional magnetic resonance imaging during Go-NoGo and Stroop task performance. In addition, both impulsivity and attentional control were measured using self-reports. Participants comprised 18 problem gamers

The cards they're dealt: types of gambling activity, online gambling, and risk of problem gambling in European adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify risk factors associated with gambling engagement and the likelihood of problem behavior, distinguishing by type of gambling activity and examining the impact of online gambling. METHODS: Data about 85,420 students aged 16 from 33 countries participating in the 2019 European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD) were analyzed through a three-stage sequential probit model, specifically focusing on four types of activity: lotteries, slot machines, cards, and betting. Furthermore, predicted probabilities were calculated for subsamples of s…

Induced abortion in sub-Saharan Africa: what we do and do not know.

The first step in addressing the growing public health problem of abortion in sub-Saharan Africa is to gain a better understanding of the problem and its complexities. Abortion behavior is inextricably connected with issues of women's roles and opportunities, and until the various dimensions of abortion behavior and its socioeconomic context are understood, governments will have difficulty addressing the problem effectively. In addition, abortion needs to be studied within the broader framework of reproductive health. In a continent where fertility is highly valued and infertility prevalent, t

Tele-PCIT: Initial Examination of Internet Delivered PCIT for Young Children with Autism.

PURPOSE: Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an empirically supported behavioral parenting program for disruptive behavior and has been shown to also be effective for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Telehealth delivery of PCIT (Tele-PCIT) is also supported, but no trials have focused on children with ASD. The purpose of the study was to examine the initial efficacy of a time limited version of Tele-PCIT within an ASD sample. METHODS: Participants included parents of 20 children (ages 2-6) with ASD who received 10 sessions of Tele-PCIT. Parents reported on their parenting

Skilled reaching an action pattern: stability in rat (Rattus norvegicus) grasping movements as a function of changing food pellet size.

Many animals in different mammalian orders display skilled forelimb use for prehension, but there has been little study of the rules underlying skilled forelimb use that may provide insight into its neural organization. Inflexibility of movement would imply an underlying fixed neural control characteristic of innate action pattern, whereas flexibility of movement would imply more plastic neural control. In the present study, rat reaching was examined by analyzing movements used to obtain nine different sized food pellets, weighing between 20 and 1000 mg. The prediction was that if the rats' re

Behavior in preschool children with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Children with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) are at an increased risk of psychiatric problems from pre-adolescence; little is known, however, about behavioral problems at a preschool age and the relationship between speech and behavior in this group. Parents of 90 children (aged 1.42-5.99 years) with 22q11DS filled out the Child Behavior Checklist, documenting behaviors including speech problems. Their profiles were compared with those of a comparison group consisting of 33 children with nonsyndromic orofacial clefts without 22q11DS, since both children with 22q11DS and children with

Challenging behaviors in adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities: current pharmacological perspectives.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) often display challenging behaviors such as hypersexuality, severe irritability, and aggression. This review emphasizes current management strategies, focusing on the evaluation of problematic behaviors and considering both pharmacological and nonpharmacological options, as well as their level of evidence in the current literature. RECENT FINDINGS: Hypersexuality in adolescents with NDDs may result from conditions such as precocious puberty, polycystic ovary syndrome, neurologic disorders, trauma, or medication effects. M

Disability and post-traumatic stress symptoms in the Ukrainian General Population during the 2022 Russian Invasion.

AIMS: Previous research has shown that people with disabilities are disproportionately vulnerable to symptoms of psychological distress after exposure to armed conflict. Past work has also shown that individuals displaced by conflict are at heightened risk of post-traumatic stress. Using a national online sample of Ukrainians in the early weeks of the 2022 Russian invasion, we aim to examine associations between functional disability and symptoms of post-traumatic stress. METHODS: We examined the association between levels of functional disability in the Ukrainian population and symptoms of p

Triarchic psychopathy and affective picture processing: An event-related potential study.

Psychopathy and its precursors appear to be associated with abnormal affective response. For example, individuals high in psychopathy show reduced psychophysiological response to unpleasant stimuli, which might explain low levels of empathy in psychopathic individuals, and their pursuit of individual goals without regard for others' wellbeing. In keeping with the notion that psychopathology is best represented on a continuum, the triarchic model suggests that psychopathy is characterized by elevations on three traits: boldness, meanness and disinhibition. Understanding how these traits relate

Homelessness Among Sexual Minority Youth.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the prevalence and types of homelessness experienced by sexual minority and heterosexual youth. Then, we examine whether state-level nondiscrimination policies and/or public attitudes on sexual diversity are associated with reduced homelessness among sexual minority youth. Finally, we investigate the differences in health risk behaviors at the intersections of sexual minority and homelessness status. METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis using a large population-based sample from 21 states collected in the 2017 and 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys. Se
