BACKGROUND: A high-fat, low-fiber diet resulting in increased excretion of fecal secondary bile acids is regarded as a major risk factor for colon cancer. Incubation of human colonic biopsies with the secondary bile acid deoxycholic acid (DCA) leads to hyperproliferation with expansion of the proliferative zone, ie, a biomarker of increased cancer risk. Dietary intake of phytate has various reported health benefits. Previous work showed that the gut microbiota can convert phytate to short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), but the microbial species and metabolic pathway are unclear. BACKGROUND: Alkyl nitrite analogs known as "poppers" have been inhaled recreationally for decades. They are available to be purchased from gas stations marketed as "nail polish remover not for human consumption". These rapid-onset, short-acting, vasodilators cause the user to experience euphoria, dizziness, tachycardia and flushing. We conducted a retrospective survey of how often doctors conducted blood tests in accordance with the package insert when thiamazole was prescribed at our hospital.
