Incurable but treatable: Understanding, uncertainty and impact in chronic blood cancers-A qualitative study from the UK's Haematological Malignancy Research Network.

OBJECTIVE: Most blood cancers are incurable and typically follow unpredictable remitting-relapsing pathways associated with varying need for treatment, which may be distressing for patients. Our objective was to conduct a qualitative study to explore understanding among patients with such malignancies, including the explanations given by HCPs and the impact of uncertain trajectories, to generate evidence that could guide improvements in clinical practice. METHODS: The study is set within a population-based patient cohort (the Haematological Malignancy Research Network), in which care is deliv

Understanding what matters most to people with multiple myeloma: a qualitative study of views on quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma is an incurable haematological cancer that affects physical, psychological and social domains of quality of life (QOL). Treatment decisions are increasingly guided by QOL issues, creating a need to monitor QOL within clinical practice. The development of myeloma-specific QOL questionnaires has been limited by a paucity of research to fully characterise QOL in this group. Aims of the present study are to (1) explore the issues important to QOL from the perspective of people with multiple myeloma, and (2) explore the views of patients and clinical staff on existing Q

Identifying Frail Patients by Using Electronic Health Records in Primary Care: Current Status and Future Directions.

With the rapidly aging population, frailty, characterized by an increased risk of adverse outcomes, has become a major public health problem globally. Several frailty guidelines or consensuses recommend screening for frailty, especially in primary care settings. However, most of the frailty assessment tools are based on questionnaires or physical examinations, adding to the clinical workload, which is the major obstacle to converting frailty research into clinical practice. Medical data naturally generated by routine clinical work containing frailty indicators are stored in electronic health r

COVID-19 burden of illness in people who are immunocompromised due to cancer: an expert opinion review.

From the beginning of the pandemic, people with cancer have experienced a high burden from COVID-19 compared with the general population, both in terms of severe COVID-19-related outcomes and reduced health-related quality of life and mental health. This review presents and discusses expert views on the burden of COVID-19 in individuals with cancer throughout the pandemic. The literature suggests that early in the pandemic, people with cancer had a disproportionately high risk of COVID-19-related hospitalization compared with the general population. This trend continued throughout the pandemic

Integrated Pleiotropic Gene Set Unveils Comorbidity Insights across Digestive Cancers and Other Diseases.

Comorbidities are prevalent in digestive cancers, intensifying patient discomfort and complicating prognosis. Identifying potential comorbidities and investigating their genetic connections in a systemic manner prove to be instrumental in averting additional health challenges during digestive cancer management. Here, we investigated 150 diseases across 18 categories by collecting and integrating various factors related to disease comorbidity, such as disease-associated SNPs or genes from sources like MalaCards, GWAS Catalog and UK Biobank. Through this extensive analysis, we have established a

Supping with the Devil: Belief and the Imaginary World of Multiple Myeloma Therapies Invented by the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review.

Previous commentaries in Innovations in Pharmacy and other peer reviewed journals have made the case that the analytical framework, if that is not too strong a term, to support pricing and access recommendations endorsed by the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER) fails to meet the standards of normal science. By any criteria the ICER analysis is best described as pseudoscience; it fails the demarcation test between biological evolution and intelligent design. Like intelligent design it has its believers; a meme for all seasons. ICER is fully aware of the fact that it fails these

Revisiting Early Palliative Care for Patients With Hematologic Malignancies and Bone Marrow Transplant: Why the Delay?

Palliative care has been defined as specialized care for patients facing serious illnesses. Despite advancements in the field and studies documenting the effectiveness of early palliative care (PC) interventions in seriously ill patients, the fields of hematologic malignancies and bone marrow transplant still lag behind of a comprehensive framework for early and effective interventions. The aim of this literature review is to analyze and discuss the possible barriers to care and delayed referrals for hematologic malignancies and bone marrow transplant patients. Using the EBSCO and PubMed datab
