Neuromuscular function: comparison of symptomatic and asymptomatic polio subjects to control subjects.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic polio survivors by history of acute poliomyelitis illness, electromyographic evidence of terminal motor unit reorganization, and neuromuscular function of the quadriceps femoris muscle. Thirty-four symptomatic postpolio subjects, 16 asymptomatic postpolio subjects, and 41 controls were studied. A questionnaire assessed polio history. Peak knee extension torque was measured isokinetically and isometrically. Endurance (time to exhaustion) was measured at 40% of maximal isometric torque.

Neuromyotonia with neuropathy and muscle hypertrophy: association or cause?

Continuous muscle fibre activity in a patient with demyelinating neuropathy is rare. We report an 18 year old boy who presented with walking difficulty and continuous rippling in muscles of upper and lower limbs. He had dysarthric speech, hypertrophied arm and calf muscles with normal power, tone, reflexes and sensations. Myokymic discharges were seen in deltoid, biceps, quadriceps and calf muscles. His blood counts, chemistry, thyroid profile, DNA, Rh factor were normal and CPK was raised. CSF showed protein 50 mg/dl and 4 lymphocyte/mm3. Nerve conduction study revealed conduction block and a

Differential effects of concentric and eccentric contractions on the primary motor cortex in healthy young and elderly participants.

INTRODUCTION: Aging is associated with a decline in musculoskeletal function, particularly muscle weakness, which affects a significant proportion of older adults and is associated with reduced quality of life and increased mortality. Two major contributors to age-related muscle weakness are muscle atrophy and cortical alterations. Eccentric exercise has been identified as a promising intervention to counteract these declines, as it has the potential to increase both muscle mass and cortical activity in young people. However, while the benefits of eccentric contractions on muscle mass in older

Pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block provides improved short-term analgesia compared with the femoral nerve block in hip fracture surgery: a single-center double-blinded randomized comparative trial.

BACKGROUND: The femoral nerve block (FNB) may be used for analgesia in hip fracture surgery. The pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block is a novel regional technique and may provide better pain reduction while preserving motor function, but these blocks have not been directly compared. METHODS: In a single-center double-blinded randomized comparative trial, patients presenting for hip fracture surgery received analgesia with either FNB or PENG block. The primary outcome measure was pain scores (Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) 0 to 10). Secondary outcomes were postoperative quadriceps strength, opia

[Relationship between gait speed and strength parameters in multiple sclerosis].

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have focused on correlation between strength and gait parameters in hemiplegia, suggesting the interest for strength training in patients with central nervous system lesions. The aim of this study was to evaluate this correlation in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with special regard to the different clinical forms including proprioceptive loss or cerebellar ataxia. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Gait speed and muscular function were performed in 27 patients with moderate affected gait (EDDS < 6). Gait speed was evaluated with Locometre and peak-torques of quadriceps and h

Effects of thoraco-lumbar electric sensory stimulation on knee extensor spasticity of persons who survived cerebrovascular accident (CVA).

Spasticity is mostly due to an excess of impulses to alpha motor neurons partly resulting from a change of interneuron activity. Low thresho … . According to our results, the surface paravertebral sensory stimulation was effective in reducing quadriceps muscle spasticity of the subjects. Both the modified Ashworth scale and the EMG activity of spastic quadriceps during eccentric contraction are suggested as sensitive tools for measuring spasticity of persons who survived cerebrovascular accident (CVA).

Group III/IV muscle afferents limit the intramuscular metabolic perturbation during whole body exercise in humans.

KEY POINTS: The purpose of this study was to determine the role of group III/IV muscle afferents in limiting the endurance exercise-induced metabolic perturbation assayed in muscle biopsy samples taken from locomotor muscle. Lumbar intrathecal fentanyl was used to attenuate the central projection of μ-opioid receptor-sensitive locomotor muscle afferents during a 5 km cycling time trial. The findings suggest that the central projection of group III/IV muscle afferent feedback constrains voluntary neural 'drive' to working locomotor muscle and limits the exercise-induced intramuscular metabolic

Early respiratory muscle involvement in LGMDR25: a case report.

Limb girdle muscular dystrophy type R25 (LGMDR25) is a rare genetic disorder due to loss-of-function mutations in BVES, characterized by progressive proximal lower limb weakness and atrioventricular block. Here we report a young Chinese man with LGMDR25 who presented with asymmetrical lower limb weakness, myalgia, palpitations and dyspnea on exertion. Muscle imaging demonstrated fatty infiltration of the long head of biceps femoris, adductor magnus, gastrocnemius and soleus, and myoedema of semitendinosus and quadriceps, sparing rectus femoris. ECG showed only mild sinus tachycardia but pulmon

Joint angle-specific neuromuscular time course of recovery after isometric resistance exercise at shorter and longer muscle lengths.

Resistance training at longer muscle lengths induces greater muscle hypertrophy and different neuromuscular functional adaptations than training at shorter muscle lengths. However, the acute time course of recovery of neuromuscular characteristics after resistance exercise at shorter and longer muscle lengths in the quadriceps has never been described. Eight healthy young participants (4 M, 4 F) were randomly assigned to perform four sets of eight maximal isometric contractions at shorter (SL; 50° knee flexion) or longer (LL; 90° knee flexion) muscle lengths in a crossover fashion. During exer

Oral ketone monoester supplementation does not accelerate recovery of muscle force or modulate circulating cytokine concentrations after muscle-damaging eccentric exercise in healthy males and females.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Does acute ketone monoester supplementation enhance the recovery of muscle force and modulate circulating cytokine concentrations after muscle-damaging eccentric exercise? What is the main finding and its importance? Ketone monoester supplementation increased plasma β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations but did not attenuate the reduction in muscle force or the increase in plasma inflammatory cytokine concentrations that occurred after eccentric exercise. Notably we report novel data demonstrating a reduction in plasma TRAIL concentrations a

Muscle stiffness of the rectus femoris and vastus lateralis in children with Osgood-Schlatter disease.

BACKGROUND: The relevance of the mechanical properties of muscles in relation to Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) remains unclear. The present study aimed to examine rectus femoris (RF) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscle stiffness in children with OSD. METHODS: A total of 28 legs affected by OSD and 26 legs without OSD were assessed. The shear-wave velocity (SWV) of the RF and VL (in m/s) during passive knee flexion (0° (i.e., fully extended position), 45°, and 90° knee joint flexion) and isometric contraction (50% of maximal voluntary contraction) was measured using shear-wave elastography. Single-cell transcriptional profiles in human skeletal muscle.

Skeletal muscle is a heterogeneous tissue comprised of muscle fiber and mononuclear cell types that, in addition to movement, influences immunity, metabolism and cognition. We investigated the gene expression patterns of skeletal muscle cells using RNA-seq of subtype-pooled single human muscle fibers and single cell RNA-seq of mononuclear cells from human vastus lateralis, mouse quadriceps, and mouse diaphragm. We identified 11 human skeletal muscle mononuclear cell types, including two fibro-adipogenic progenitor (FAP) cell subtypes. The human FBN1+ FAP cell subtype is novel and a correspondi

Does Low-Level Laser Therapy Decrease Muscle-Damaging Mediators After Performance in Soccer Athletes Versus Sham Laser Treatment? A Critically Appraised Topic.

Clinical Scenario: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a controversial topic for its use in athletic recovery, mainly due to inconsistency in research regarding the application of LLLT. Articles on LLLT have assessed its effectiveness in untrained humans through pain scales, functional scales, and blood draws, and it has been found capable in nonathletic rehabilitative use. The controversy lies with LLLT in the recovering athlete. Not only do athletes need to perform at high levels, but each sport is unique in the metabolic demands placed on the athletes' bodies. This modality can alter chemical
