Effects of Mn and Fe levels on Bacillus subtilis spore resistance and effects of Mn2+, other divalent cations, orthophosphate, and dipicolinic acid on protein resistance to ionizing radiation.

Spores of Bacillus subtilis strains with (wild type) or without (α(-)β(-)) most DNA-binding α/β-type small, acid-soluble proteins (SASP) were prepared in medium with additional MnCl(2) concentrations of 0.3 μM to 1 mM. These haploid spores had Mn levels that varied up to 180-fold and Mn/Fe ratios that varied up to 300-fold. However, the resistance of these spores to desiccation, wet heat, dry heat, and in particular ionizing radiation was unaffected by their level of Mn or their Mn/Fe ratio; this was also the case for wild-type spore resistance to hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)). However, α(-)β(-

Analysis of the effects of gamma and beta radiation on amaranth polyminerals and seeds using EPR, TL and germination performance.

Amaranth is a highly nutritive yet unexploited pseudocereal whose behavior under ionizing radiation remains poorly characterized, despite its increasing use in food systems. In this study, amaranth seeds from Tulyehualco, CDMX, were irradiated with 0, 2, 5, 8, and 10 kGy of gamma radiation, and their germination performance was assessed using an analysis of variance (ANOVA). A single-factor design demonstrated that germination is present at doses below 2 kGy. Thermoluminescence analyses were performed on silicate minerals isolated from the seeds. X-ray diffraction (XRD), supported by SEM/EDS c

Effects of different CBCT acquisition protocols on radiation dose and observer agreement in the assessment of impacted mandibular third molars.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different CBCT (Cone-beam computed tomography) protocols defined by device type, field of view (FOV), and dose settings on organ-specific radiation doses and inter-/intra-observer agreement in the assessment of impacted mandibular third molars. A total of 168 CBCT scans (NewTom 7G and NewTom Go) were retrospectively analyzed. Each device included six protocols (different FOVs and dose levels: low, regular, best). Organ and effective doses were calculated using the Monte Carlo PCXMC 2.0 Rotation software. Three observers independently assessed five an

Effects of external radiation dose on pediatric peripheral blood components after the Great East Japan Earthquake: Fukushima Health Management Survey.

The Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) caused an accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, resulting in widespread dispersion of radioactive materials across the Fukushima Prefecture. We aimed to analyze the effects of external radiation exposure after the GEJE on peripheral blood components in children living in the evacuation area. We analyzed 27,844 children aged ≤ 15 years, including residents of evacuation areas and infants aged < 1 year born to parents residing in these areas. All participants underwent comprehensive health checks between 2011 and 2017, with available data o

Effects of Tanshinone IIA on Calcium Overload and Pyroptosis in Radiation-induced Heart Disease Evaluated in Vivo and in Vitro.

Radiation-induced heart disease (RIHD) has become an unavoidable and challenging problem that greatly impacts the outcomes of patients with tumors undergoing radiotherapy. Many studies have shown the positive effects of tanshinone IIA on cardiac function; however, its exact role and the underlying mechanism in RIHD remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of RIHD and examine the protective effects of tanshinone IIA. We developed in vitro and in vivo models of RIHD and assessed the damage caused by X-ray radiation to mice hearts and H9c2 cells using echocardiography, myocar

Mapping the effects of specific radiation damage and solvent radiolysis in buffers and crystals with online UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy.

Online UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy is often used during crystallographic data collection to characterize chromophores within proteins. This includes the study of electron-rich or redox-active enzyme intermediates and cofactors that are prone to specific radiation damage, necessitating suitable low-dose data-collection strategies. In crystallo spectroscopy enables the monitoring of X-ray-induced changes in the spectroscopic signatures of proteins and ligands; however, a comprehensive approach that also considers buffer components is required. Here, we present a mapping of X-ray-induced spect

Effects of Ozone-Depleting Substances on Ultraviolet Radiation and Skin Cancer Rates in Australia and the United States of America.

Stratospheric ozone (O3) losses and consequent increases in surface ultraviolet (UV) radiation remain a health concern due to close association with skin cancers and cataracts. This study estimated how emissions of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) affect, via O3 reductions, surface UV radiation and associated health impacts in Australia compared to the United States. We used climatological atmospheric data and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Atmospheric Health Effects Framework (AHEF) model to estimate these effects for historic and projected ODS emissions. Compared to the United St

Protective Effects of Maternal Administration of a Standardized Extract of Cultured Lentinula edodes Mycelia against Radiation-Induced Fetal Morphological Abnormalities.

Exposure to ionizing radiation during early pregnancy poses serious risks to fetal development, particularly during organogenesis. In this study, we evaluated the protective effects of AHCC®, a standardized extract of Lentinula edodes mycelia with known immunomodulatory and metabolic properties, using an ICR mouse model. Intraperitoneal administration of AHCC prior to 1.4-Gy γ-irradiation on gestational day 9 significantly reduced the incidence of tail malformations and diaphragmatic hernias, without affecting implantation or fetal survival. Additionally, lifelong AHCC ingestion across three g

Hydrogen-rich water attenuates radiation-induced oral mucositis in mice via antioxidant and gut microbiota-stabilizing effects: a longitudinal study.

Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) frequently complicates head and neck radiotherapy, leading to severe pain, compromised nutrition, and often requiring treatment modifications. Although craniofacial-only irradiation is confined to the head and neck region, it can still disrupt gut homeostasis. Mice subjected to head and neck irradiation developed marked epithelial damage in both the oral and intestinal mucosa, as evidenced by pronounced RIOM and diminished barrier integrity. Histological examination revealed substantial mucosal thinning and leukocyte infiltration in the tongue, along wit

Histopathologic effects of mobile phone radiation exposure on the testes and sperm parameters: a systematic literature review of animal studies.

INTRODUCTION: Male infertility, often attributed to insufficient production of healthy and active sperm, can be exacerbated by electromagnetic radiation emitted from mobile phones, which disrupts normal spermatogenesis and leads to a notable decline in sperm quality. The main targets of mobile phone-induced damage in the testes are Leydig cells, seminiferous tubules, and sperm cells. The aim of this systematic literature review is to identify histopathological changes in the testes due to mobile phone radiation exposure and to examine its effects on sperm parameters in experimental animals. Non-thermal biological effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation: Mechanistic insights into male reproductive vulnerability in the era of ubiquitous exposure.

The rapid proliferation of wireless technologies has led to continuous, low-intensity exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMR) from devices such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers, and wearable electronics. Although RF-EMR is non-ionizing, a growing body of evidence indicates that chronic exposure can induce non-thermal biological effects with significant implications for male reproductive health. This review synthesizes current findings on the mechanistic pathways through which RF-EMR may impair fertility, focusing on oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA damage,

Cognitive Effects of Simulated Galactic Cosmic Radiation Are Mediated by ApoE Status, Sex, and Environment in APP Knock-In Mice.

Cosmic radiation experienced during space travel may increase the risk of cognitive impairment. While simulated galactic cosmic radiation (GCRsim) has led to memory deficits in wildtype (WT) mice, it has not been investigated whether GCRsim in combination with genetic risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD) worsens memory further in aging mice. Here, we investigated the central nervous system (CNS) effects of 0 Gy (sham) or 0.75 Gy five-ion GCRsim or 2 Gy gamma radiation (IRR) in 14-month-old female and male APPNL-F/NL-F knock-in (KI) mice bearing humanized ApoE3 or ApoE4 (APP;E3F and APP;E4
