Brain injury in sports.

OBJECTIVE: Helmets are used for sports, military, and transportation to protect against impact forces and associated injuries. The common belief among end users is that the helmet protects the whole head, including the brain. However, current consensus among biomechanists and sports neurologists indicates that helmets do not provide significant protection against concussion and brain injuries. In this paper the authors present existing scientific evidence on the mechanisms underlying traumatic head and brain injuries, along with a biomechanical evaluation of 21 current and retired football hel

One-year follow-up after bone marrow stromal cell treatment in middle-aged female rats with stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We sought to evaluate the long-term effects of bone marrow stromal cell (BMSC) treatment on retired breeder rats with stroke. METHODS: Female retired breeder rats were subjected to 2-hour middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) followed by an injection of 2 x 10(6) male BMSCs (n=8) or phosphate-buffered saline (n=11) into the ipsilateral internal carotid artery at 1 day after stroke. The rats were humanely killed 1 year later. Functional tests, in situ hybridization, and histochemical and immunohistochemical staining were performed. RESULTS: Significant recovery of ne

Digital health literacy in safety-net primary care: a needs assessment and call to action for health equity.

BACKGROUND: Digital literacy is a crucial social determinant of health. The COVID-19 pandemic's rapid shift to digital health services has widened disparities for older adults, racial and ethnic minorities, and low-income populations. Understanding barriers to electronic medical record (EMR) use is essential for equitable care in safety-net settings. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional needs assessment survey (N = 204) at an urban primary care clinic in Washington Heights, New York City, serving predominantly Latino (83%), Spanish-speaking (31%), and older adult (67% aged ≥65) patients. Hip pain and its correlation with cam morphology in young skiers-a minimum of 5 years follow-up.

BACKGROUND: There is conflicting evidence regarding the association between cam morphological changes and hip pain, and it remains unclear who with cam morphology will develop hip pain and who will not. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between cam morphology, hip pain, and activity level at a 5-year follow-up in young Alpine and Mogul skiers. METHOD: All students (n = 76) at Åre Ski National Sports High School were invited and accepted participation in this prospective study at baseline. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of both hips was conducted to evaluate the presence of cam

Greater knowledge concerning these issues may help public health policy-makers design more effective means of preventing substance abuse. Psychological distress, self-determination, and social capital associated with quality of life among retirees in Sarawak: a cross-sectional structural equation modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Population aging is accelerating in middle-income countries; however, evidence on the psychosocial factors associated with later-life quality of life (QoL) remains limited in Southeast Asian settings. Psychological distress, self-determination, and social capital have each been linked to well-being in older populations, but few studies have examined these constructs together among retirees in geographically dispersed, multiethnic populations. This study examined the associations between psychological distress, self-determination, social capital, catastrophic health expenditure (CHE

Factors influencing patient-provider communication about subjective cognitive decline in people with COPD: Insights from a national survey.

Objective: While there is a growing body of evidence indicating a relationship between COPD and cognitive impairment, there is a gap in evidence regarding discussions of cognitive symptoms in healthcare settings. This study investigated the extent to which individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD) self-reported confusion or memory loss with healthcare professionals. Methods: A secondary analysis of 2019 BRFSS data of US adults aged 45+ with COPD (N = 107,204), using logistic regression to explore associations between socio-demographic

Aging in Flood-Prone Coastal Areas: Discerning the Health and Well-Being Risk for Older Residents.

Coastal communities are increasingly exposed to more intense and frequent hurricanes, accelerated sea-level rise, and prolonged tidal inundation, yet they are often a preferred retirement destination for older adults vulnerable to flooding and extreme weather events. The unique physical and psychosocial challenges of older population age 65 and over may affect their level of preparedness, capacity to cope with, and ability to respond and recover from a hazard event. Despite the clear vulnerabilities of older residents living in high-risk areas when compared to younger coastal populations, ther…

High bone mineral density in loaded skeletal regions of former professional football (soccer) players: what is the effect of time after active career?

OBJECTIVES: Physical exercise is an important factor in the acceleration and maintenance of bone mineral density (BMD). Football is an impact loading sport and some studies demonstrate its site specific, bone mass increasing effect. We compared BMD at different skeletal regions in a group of former professional football players and in normal control subjects and evaluated the effect of demographic factors and time after active career on BMD. METHODS: Twenty four former football players <70 years old who had retired from professional football at least 10 years previously and 25 non-athletic co

AIMS: The risk of cognitive decline after losing a spouse remained mixed. This study aims to investigate the association between spousal loss and risk of cognitive decline, assess whether this association varies by sex and age, and identify modifiable factors. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study using harmonized data from six population-based ageing surveys: the US Health and Retirement Study and its sister surveys in England, Mexico, China, India and South Africa, incorporating their respective Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) sub-studies.
