Whole brain dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) levels were measured in sexually maturing (2 years +) male and female rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, following exposure to 0.01 mg/L hydrogen cyanide (HCN). Peripheral precocious puberty (PPP) refers to the early onset of sexual maturation that is independent of central nervous system control. The extensive differential diagnosis includes congenital and acquired causes. Presenting features depend on which class of sex steroids is involved, and diagnosis rests on hormonal and, if indicated, imaging and/or genetic studies. Effective treatment exists for nearly all causes of PPP. Ongoing research will advance our therapeutic armamentarium and understanding of the pathophysiologic basis of these conditions.

Plasma levels of luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormones were measured for 24 hours in six subjects affected by constitutional stature delay associated with sexual maturation delay. The children in pubertal stage exhibited fluctuating plasma concentrations of these hormones which significantly increased during sleep, as in healthy pubertal subjects. Thus in this type of delayed puberty, the synchronization of augmented gonadotropin secretion with sleep develops later in chronologic age but it is strongly related to bone age.

Growth assessments are made in children to monitor their growth with time. In children with chronic disease, these data aid in determining the effect of disease on growth and planning and evaluating therapy. Stature is the most important aspect of physical growth, but weight, body composition, skeletal maturation, and sexual development are also important. Methods for making these assessments are given. Techniques for data reduction and statistical treatment of data comparing groups of children are discussed.

It is well known that migraine is far more represented in females than in males.
