Q fever (Query Fever) is a zoonosis caused by the rickettsia Coxiella burnetii. domestic ungulates such as sheep, cattle, and goats serve as the reservoir of infection for humans and shed the desiccation-resistant organism in urine, feces, milk, and especially in birth products. In humans the illness is generally mild; however, Q fever hepatitis is often seen and Q fever endocarditis is an uncommon, but frequently fatal complication. Q fever long has been recognized as an occupational hazard among persons working with animals or animal products, and in laboratories working with C. burnetii. Re…

The histochemical localization of alkaline phosphatase in sheep parathyroid gland was investigated using light and electron microscopy. The reaction products of enzyme activity were observed by light microscopy in pericytes. By electron microscopy they were limited to the intercellular spaces between the gland cells, being exclusively confined to the external surface of plasma membrane.

The structure and distribution of organelles within oocytes of developing antral follicles were studied qualitatively and quantitatively. In the smallest category of follicle (0.2-0.4 mm diam.) the Golgi was present in a peripheral position, the endoplasmic reticulum was distended and mitochondria were intimately associated with it. Processes from surrounding cumulus cells were in contact with the oolemma which was thrown up into slender villi, increasing the oocyte surface area 5-fold. In these and all subsequent follicles the oocyte cytoplasm contained numerous 30 nm particles or vesicles. A

The transmission of Hammondia heydorni among sheep, goats, cattle, dogs and coyotes is described. Oocysts of H. heydorni, obtained from dog faeces by feeding naturally infected goat meat, were fed to an experimental goat. After 312 days tissues from this animal were fed to 2 dogs. One dog, which received goat muscle, shed oocysts, whereas the other dog which received brain, spleen, kidneys, lungs and liver did not. Oocysts from the dog fed goat muscle were fed to an experimental sheep. After 73 days sheep tissues were fed to a dog and a coyote, both of which shed oocysts 5-8 days later. A seco…

21 ewes weighing about 46 kg were transfered to grass on a copper deficient Rye Grass pasture. 11 ewes were injected intramuscularly with 60 … igher than in the untreated controls. The copper dose used (60) mg) is probably a maximum for adult sheep since one of the injected ewes at slaughter had a liver copper content of 1060 micrograms/g D.M. which approaches the toxic limit.

Inoculation of lambs either intravenously or intranasally with Histophilus ovis resulted in septicaemia. There was bacterial thrombosis and vasculitis in the liver, lung, kidneys and heart. These lesions were similar to those in natural cases of the disease. With intravenous inoculation of a less virulent isolate there were abscesses in the subcutaneous tissues, muscle fascia and joint bursae.

This is a summary compiled on a regional basis from reports of officials of the Division of Veterinary Services in respect of sheep scab outbreaks occurring between 1967 and 1976. Possible sources of infection responsible for outbreaks occurring between 1940 and 1966 are discussed. Action to be taken where the disease is suspected, and control measures in terms of the Animal Diseases and Parasites Act (13/1956) when the disease has been confirmed, are dealt with. Possible causes for the continuing spread of the disease and dipping problems are discussed. Recommendations for the future control …

Sixteen of 17 sheep with spontaneous listeric encephalitis had neuritis characterized by diffuse and focal intrafascicular and perineural accumulations of lymphocytes, plasma cells, macrophages and neutrophils in one or more cranial nerves. Nine sheep had extensive trigeminal neuritis which was usually unilateral. Brain lesions were mainly in the stem and were foci of macrophages or neutrophils or both, malacia, neutrophilic neuronophagia, vascular cuffing, and meningitis. Lesions in the brain and trigeminal ganglia were most severe on the same side as the affected trigeminal nerve. Gram-posit…

A method is described for the isolation and purification of infectious mononucleosis receptor (IMR) in high yield from sheep erythrocyte stroma. The procedure involves extraction of the stroma successively with boiling acetone, 100, 75 and 50% ethanol which removes approximately 40% non-infectious mononucleosis-active material. Subsequent phenol/buffered saline extraction of the residue from the organic extraction yields a highly active IMR preparation in the aqueous phases. This material was further purified by ethanol precipitation and gel filtration chromatography. The yield was 0.2% of the…

Kidneys from 7 mutant Southdown sheep with congenital hyperbilirubinemia, aged from 1 to 5 years were examined. Renal biopsies were taken from another mutant at 3 months and 12 months of age. At 3 months, lesions consisted of thin radial bands of myxomatous tissue in the medullary rays and atrophy of the adjacent collecting tubules. By 1 year collagen had replaced myxomatous tissue. Grossly, the kidneys were normal until 2 years when they became red and gray mottled and stained with bilirubin. The capsules stripped readily to reveal fine granular surfaces in sheep over 2 years of age. On the c…

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans have previously been shown to be caused by … r been observed when these mice are exposed to BSE that has been experimentally transmitted through sheep or goats, indicating that humans may potentially be more susceptible to BSE from small ruminants. Here we demonstrate that increased transmissibility of small ruminant BSE to HuTg mice was not due to replication of higher levels of infectivity in sh …
