INTRODUCTION: Civilian gun violence is a public health crisis in the USA that will be an economic burden reported to be as high as $17.7 billion with over half coming from US taxpayers dollars through Medicaid-related costs. The purpose of this study is to review the epidemiology of upper extremity firearm injuries in the USA and the associated injury burden.
METHODS: The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research's Firearm Injury Surveillance Study database, collected from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, was queried from 1993 to 2015. The following vari

BACKGROUND: Disc golf is a sport played much like traditional golf, but rather than using a ball and club, players throw flying discs with various throwing motions. It has been played by an estimated 8 to 12 million people in the United States. Like all sports, injuries sustained while playing disc golf are not uncommon. Although formalized in the 1970s, it has grown at a rapid pace; however, disc golf-related injuries have yet to be described in the medical literature.
PURPOSE: To describe the most common injuries incurred by disc golf players while comparing the different types of throwing

Patients commonly present to the emergency department (ED) with shoulder injuries and shoulder pain. Winged scapula is one potential underlying cause of shoulder pain which is often forgotten or ill-defined. This non-traumatic skeletal condition typically presents as a prominent protrusion of the medial border of the bone from its normal position in the back. It often results from damage to and/or compression of the long thoracic nerve, which innervates the serratus anterior muscle. History taking, physical examination and imaging are needed to correctly diagnose winged scapula. Conservative m…

Proximal humerus lesser tuberosity avulsions are uncommon injuries; however, when present, they can be debilitating for patients. As such, they pose a unique clinical challenge. These fractures were traditionally treated through an open approach to the proximal humerus; however, arthroscopic techniques continue to evolve and are increasingly used for these types of injuries. We describe our minimally invasive arthroscopic technique to repair lesser tuberosity avulsions using standard arthroscopic equipment. This method is safe, efficient, and applies basic shoulder arthroscopic techniques.

Vascular injury is a rare complication of anterior dislocation of the shoulder joint. Two cases, both in elderly persons (65 and 74 years) were treated in our Department during a 5-year period. Atherosclerotic changes of the axillary artery and previous shoulder dislocation are predisposing factors for such injury.

Clavicular fractures make up 45% of shoulder girdle fractures. The clavicle's susceptibility to injury is due to its subcutaneous position and its role as the bony connection between the thorax and the shoulder. In 95% of cases the mechanism of injury is a direct blow to the shoulder. These fractures are usually treated conservatively without surgery. But there are a few such fractures that require surgical repair in order to unite well. 9 patients were operated on for clavicular fractures during 1991-1995. The indications for surgical repair were lateral-third fracture, floating shoulder, neu

Swimmer's shoulder is a common condition among elite swimmers, often leading to pain and reduced performance. Fatigue can exacerbate this condition by affecting shoulder strength, proprioception, and range of motion, potentially increasing the risk of overuse injuries. This preliminary study aimed to evaluate the impact of physiotherapy treatment and the effects of fatigue on shoulder kinematics using inertial and magnetic measurement units (IMUs). Five male swimmers (aged 21-27) with at least 3 years of training and suffering from swimmer's shoulder pain participated in the study. The protoco

BACKGROUND: Posterior shoulder instability is common in young athletes. Although the posterior shoulder instability literature is less robust than its anterior counterpart, many surgical procedures have been developed and refined over the past several centuries to address this condition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article represents a retrospective historical analysis of the most common procedures used to treat posterior shoulder instability after sports injuries. A systematic approach to obtain published information on posterior shoulder instability was performed using the PubMed/MEDLINE da

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic climbing exercises are employed for the treatment of shoulder- and knee-joint injuries. However, there is a void in the literature regarding muscle activation levels during the performance of these exercises. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate differences in muscle activation during therapeutic climbing exercises depending on the degree of task difficulty. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIAL AND METHODS: A sample of 10 healthy subjects (sex: 4 females, 6 males; age: 27 ± 3 years; climbing experience: 5 ± 3 years) performed three shoulder girdle (i. e., wide shoulder p

CLINICAL SCENARIO: Shoulder pain is a common musculoskeletal condition that affects up to 25% of the general population. Shoulder pain can be caused by any number of underlying conditions including Subacromial impingement syndrome, rotator-cuff tendinitis, and biceps tendinitis. Regardless of the specific pathology, pain is generally the number 1 symptom associated with shoulder injuries and can severely affect daily activities and quality of life of patients with these conditions. Two of the primary goals in the treatment of these conditions are reducing pain and increasing shoulder range of …

PURPOSE: To compare the functional and EMG outcomes of long-nerve grafts to nerve transfers for complete axillary nerve palsy.
METHODS: Over a 10-year period at a single institution, 14 patients with axillary nerve palsy were treated with long-nerve grafts and 24 patients were treated with triceps-to-axillary nerve transfers by the same surgeon (S.W.W.). Data were collected prospectively at regular intervals, beginning before surgery and continuing up to 11 years after surgery. Prior to intervention, all patients demonstrated EMG evidence of complete denervation of the deltoid. Deltoid recove

West Coast Dungeness crab fishers suffer a high prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries, especially low back pain. Substantial trunk flexion and associated low back loads during crab sorting tasks have been attributed to awkward sorting table heights. This study examined how varying table heights affect biomechanical loads on the low back and shoulders. Twenty-five participants performed crab sorting tasks at three table heights while trunk and shoulder joint angles, moments, muscle activity, perceived exertion, and discomfort were measured. Increasing table height reduced trunk flexion and lum

A combination of coracoid fracture and acromioclavicular dislocation is rare. Detecting further pathologies that could cause multiple superior shoulder suspensory complex disruptions is mandatory. Literature regarding these injuries and their management is lacking. We report our diagnostic and surgical strategies, and the postoperative outcomes of superior shoulder suspensory complex disruptions. We present five cases, treated from 2011 to 2016, who had >2 disruptions of the superior shoulder suspensory complex, involving at least a coracoid fracture and an acromioclavicular joint dislocation.

The shoulder is the most frequently dislocated joint in the body due to a larger range of motion and a small area of articulation between the humeral and glenoid surfaces. Traumatic shoulder dislocations, especially those associated with injury to the labroligamentous or bony stabilizers of the joint, lead to further reduction of articular surface contact with resultant glenohumeral instability and recurrent shoulder dislocations. Imaging plays an increasingly important role in the preoperative evaluation of patients with traumatic shoulder instability by evaluating glenohumeral bone loss (uni

UNLABELLED: Displaced fractures of the acromion are rare injuries. A 45-year-old lady presented with an isolated acromion fracture (type III, Kuhn classification) resulting from a direct blow to the top of her right shoulder in a fall while skiing. After standard clinical and radiological examination of the shoulder, an open reduction and internal plate fixation using a postero-superior approach to the scapula was performed. Early rehabilitation of the arm and shoulder was initiated. At 50 days after surgery the patient achieved a full range of motion in her right shoulder and muscle strength

We report the case of a 16-year-old elite gymnast who presented with recurring pain in the left shoulder after training. The athlete recalled an injury to the shoulder 2 years ago. Clinically a localized tenderness to the anterior shoulder and loss of strength and range of motion was noted. Imaging investigation suggested a neglected lesser tuberosity avulsion. The athlete was treated with open excision of the deformed tuberosity and direct repair of the subscapularis to the humeral head. Following a careful postoperative rehabilitation protocol the athlete was able to return to unrestricted g

Acromioclavicular joint dislocation with intact coracoclavicular ligaments accompanied by fracture of the coracoid process is a rare injury. The patients are treated with conservative and/or surgical methods. A 30-year-old male patient developed type 3 acromioclavicular dislocation and coracoid process fracture due to a fall in the right shoulder. Both injuries were treated surgically. Following open reduction, the acromioclavicular joint was fixed with a Knowles pin, and the coracoid process was fixed with a 4.0-mm malleolar screw. Active-assisted rehabilitation of the shoulder was initiated
