Bridging the Gap Between Rehabilitation and Return to Work: A Qualitative Evaluation of a Workplace Intervention for Low Back Pain.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) can lead to disability and sick leave, impacting work participation and overall health. Given the complex and multifactorial nature of LBP, Belgium's Federal Agency for Occupational Risks (FEDRIS) promotes a secondary prevention strategy for LBP among workers engaged in ergonomically demanding tasks. This strategy includes multidisciplinary-based rehabilitation and an optional workplace intervention (WPI), initiated upon employer request. The WPI component consists of a half-day ergonomic risk analysis at the workplace conducted by an external occupational healt…

The Association of Physiotherapy and Opioid Use With Duration of Compensated Time Loss for Workers With Low Back Pain.

OBJECTIVE: To determine patterns of physiotherapy and opioid use among compensated workers with low back pain (LBP), factors associated with these, and their association with time loss. METHODS: Accepted Victorian and South Australian workers' compensation claims, services, and medicines data for LBP claims lodged June 30, 2010-July 1, 2015. Descriptive statistics, multinomial logistic, and Cox regression were used to determine usage groups, their predictors, and effect of these on time loss. RESULTS: Of 15,728 claims, 24.4% received no services, 3.6% received opioids only, 43.3% received ph

Demographic variation in fit note receipt and long-term conditions in south London.

OBJECTIVES: Introduced in the UK in 2010, the fit note was designed to address the problem of long-term sickness absence. We explored (1) associations between demographic variables and fit note receipt, 'maybe fit' use and long-term conditions, (2) whether individuals with long-term conditions receive more fit notes and are more likely to have the 'maybe fit' option selected and (3) whether long-term conditions explained associations between demographic variables and fit note receipt. METHODS: Data were extracted from Lambeth DataNet, a database containing electronic medical records of all 45

The comorbidity of low back pelvic pain and risk of depression and anxiety in pregnancy in primiparous women.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 50% of Australian women experience low back pain in pregnancy, with somewhere between 8 and 36% of women suffering from pregnancy related depression/anxiety. Both low back and pelvic pain and depression and anxiety are associated with poor maternal health outcomes, including increased sick leave, higher rates of functional disability, and increased access to healthcare. It also impacts upon time and mode of delivery with an increase in inductions and elective caesarean sections. For babies of women with depression and anxiety preterm birth, low birth weight and intrau…

Accessibility of prison healthcare for elderly inmates, a qualitative assessment.

Aging in custody and the rising population of elderly prisoners are creating compelling challenges for criminal justice, prison and public healthcare systems. Geriatric syndrome and higher prevalence of co-morbidities amongst older inmates result in heightened vulnerability in prison environments. Empirical research addressing older adults' access to medical care in detention is scarce; therefore, this study assessed access to medical care in prison from the perspective of older prisoners in Switzerland. We interviewed a sample of 35 older inmates (average age 61 years) on their experience of

Absence from work and the medical sickness certificate.

Internet and dematerialization have greatly facilitated the medical profession. Contractual physicians and national health service doctors now have efficient tools for the electronic management of their routine administrative workload. A recent innovation is the medical sickness certificate issued by primary care providers and national health service physicians. Following postponements and uncertainties, procedures for the electronic completion and online transmission of the sickness certificate are now complete. The changes introduced by the so-called "Brunetta decree", however, have made its

Predictors of long-term return to work and symptom remission in sick-listed patients with major depression.

OBJECTIVE: Although major depressive disorder (MDD) has substantial negative effects on work outcomes, little is known regarding how to promote a return to work (RTW) after MDD-related sickness absence. The present study aimed to examine predictors across multiple domains for long-term RTW in patients who are sick-listed because of their MDD, and to compare these with predictors for long-term symptom remission. METHOD: Participants (n = 117) were diagnosed with MDD according to DSM-IV criteria, absent from work for at least 25% of their contract hours, and referred by occupational physicians

Levocetirizine is an effective treatment in patients suffering from chronic idiopathic urticaria: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel, multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) is defined by the almost daily presence of urticaria for at least 6 weeks without an identifiable cause. Symptoms include short-lived wheals, itching, and erythema. CIU impedes significantly a patient's quality of life (QoL). Levocetirizine is an antihistamine from the latest generation approved for CIU. AIM: To investigate the efficacy of levocetirizine, 5 mg, and placebo for the symptoms and signs of CIU, as well as for the QoL and productivity. METHODS: The primary criteria of evaluation were the pruritus severity scores over 1 week of treatm

Predictors of time loss after back injury in nurses.

STUDY DESIGN: A 2-year prospective inception cohort study of back injury in nurses. OBJECTIVES: To determine the extent to which characteristics of nurses, of the injury, and of the workplace predict occurrence and duration of time loss from work after back injury. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: During 2 years, 320 nurses incurred 416 back injuries at a large teaching hospital in Winnipeg, Canada. Nurses injured on preselected wards were targeted for early intervention, including provision of modified work, whereas nurses injured on other wards received the usual care. METHODS: Time loss attri

The work and vocational advice intervention for adults in full or part-time employment: a synopsis of the WAVE feasibility study and RCT.

BACKGROUND: Accessible occupational health advice is only available to approximately half the United Kingdom population. With rising sickness absence new models for delivering occupational health are required to support employees with health conditions to manage their condition at work. AIM: To determine, in patients consulting in general practice who receive a fit note, whether the addition of a vocational advice intervention to usual primary care leads to fewer days lost from work, and whether vocational advice is cost-effective. DESIGN: Intervention development: Training development using

Sickness absenteeism among nurses after the COVID-19 pandemic: A study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Sickness absenteeism among the nurses in Malaysia is not fully understood. Complicated with the increase in workload and mental stress during the COVID-19 pandemic and the manifestation of long COVID-19 symptoms, there is a need for an updated insight on the prevalence and the risk factors of sickness absenteeism among nurses in Malaysia. As such, we designed a study protocol that assess the prevalence and risk factors of sickness absenteeism among nurses in Malaysia in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a correlational cross-sectional study. The soci

The Association of Physiotherapy Continuity of Care with Duration of Time Loss Among Compensated Australian Workers with Low Back Pain.

PURPOSE: The aims of this study are to determine how continuous the care provided by physiotherapists to compensated workers with low back pain is, what factors are associated with physiotherapy continuity of care (CoC; treatment by the same provider), and what the association between physiotherapy CoC and duration of working time loss is. METHODS: Workers' compensation claims and payments data from Victoria and South Australia were analysed. Continuity of care was measured with the usual provider continuity metric. Binary logistic regression examined factors associated with CoC. Cox regressi

The impact of paid family leave on parent and infant health outcomes: a systematic review of quasi-experimental research.

BACKGROUND: Despite strong international evidence that Paid Family Leave (PFL) policies support the physical health and mental health of parents and infants and domestic evidence of its benefits on family economic well-being, the United States lacks a national PFL policy. METHODS: This systematic review sought to evaluate the association of PFL in the United States with parent and infant health outcomes. Quasi-experimental research studies with comparisons of states with PFL policies versus those without such policies were eligible for review. A search strategy was created to match the resear
