Which children go on to develop dyslexia? Since dyslexia has a multifactorial etiology, this question can be restated as: what are the factors that put children at high risk for developing dyslexia? It is argued that a useful theoretical framework to address this question is Pennington's (2006) multiple deficit model (MDM). This model replaces models that attribute dyslexia to a single underlying cause. Subsequently, the generalist genes hypothesis for learning (dis)abilities (Plomin and Kovas, 2005) is described and integrated with the MDM. Next, findings are presented from a longitudinal stu

beta-thalassemia major can be caused by homozygosity or compound heterozygosity for beta-globin gene mutations (HBB gene). Most cases are inherited from parents who both have diseased alleles of the HBB gene. We report a patient with late-onset beta-thalassemia major that evolved from beta-thalassemia minor in which only one of her parents had the diseased HBB gene. To study the cause of beta-thalassemia major in this patient, we performed the 100K single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping assay, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and DNA methylation analysis of the imprinting genes near the

A single tumor contains a heterogeneous population of cancer cells. Some cancer cells express antigens and are susceptible to specific CTLs. However, other cancer cells are antigen-loss variants (ALVs) that escape these CTLs because they express little or no antigen. Here, we show that antigen-specific T cells can eliminate ALVs when the parental population expresses a model gp33 antigen (KAVYNFATM) at a level sufficient to be locally cross-presented by the nonmalignant stromal cells. That is, the ALVs are eliminated as bystanders because the stroma is destroyed. ALVs escape bystander killing

In a group of intact families, we examined the rates and parameters of verbal, physical, and sexual abuse in 35 women with borderline personality disorder (BPD), 34 women with anorexia nervosa (AN), and 33 women without a clinical history (NC); their experience of multiple abuse and its correlation with their SCL-90-R scores; and their reports of abuse of their siblings. Corroboration of abuse was obtained from some parents in each group. Women with BPD suffered more intrafamilial verbal and physical abuse. Whereas AN and NC women experienced relatively rare single events of extrafamilial sexu

The DNA code represents a genetic instruction as to how the human body develops and works. A 'spelling mistake' in the DNA code of the developing fetus can lead to a single gene condition. Examples of single-gene conditions include cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease and Huntington's disease. Single gene conditions collectively affect 1 in 100 births and can be inherited from one or both parents, or can occur without any family history, arising spontaneously out of a one-off change (pathogenic variant) in a known gene. Sometimes there can be specific anomalies seen on the ultrasound scan that

In a single-center Italian study (2016-2023), we analyzed all children and young people (n = 53) with tuberculosis. All were born to foreign-born parents. Those born in Italy were younger and mainly had pulmonary tuberculosis, whereas those born abroad were more frequently malnourished and vaccinated with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin. These findings highlight the need for targeted screening, nutrition support, and vaccination strategies.

Persistence of HIV latently infected cells is a barrier to HIV cure. The "kick and kill" strategy for a cure includes clearance of the viral reservoir by HIV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs). However, exhaustion and senescence of T cells accelerates during HIV infection, and does not fully recover, despite complete viral suppression under antiretroviral therapy. We previously established an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) from a parental HIV-specific CTL clone and generated an iPSC-derived rejuvenated HIV-specific CTL clone (iPSC-CTL), which exhibited an early memory phenotype, hig

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The safety of placing multiple overlapped endoluminal flow diverters remains unclear because small eloquent branch arteries theoretically could become occluded by these devices. We placed single and multiple flow diverters over small branch arteries in rabbit aortas to determine the incidence of branch artery occlusion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Flow diverters (PED) were placed into 22 female New Zealand white rabbits abdominal aortas to cover ≥1 lumbar artery. Animals were divided into 3 groups (single PED, n = 9; double PED with 2 telescoped/overlapped devices, n = 7; a

INTRODUCTION: In September 2025 China announced the inclusion of HPV vaccination in its national immunization program; parental hesitancy remains the major modifiable barrier to rapid coverage expansion among school-age girls. Our study assessed the effectiveness of safety-focused, personal benefit, and collective benefit information interventions (vs. basic information alone) on parental HPV vaccine hesitancy.
METHODS: This double-blind, parallel-group randomized online survey was conducted in mainland China (November-December 2023). Parents of unvaccinated girls aged 9-14 years were recruit

BACKGROUND: Children who show disproportionate difficulty with the pragmatic as compared with the structural aspects of language are described as having pragmatic language impairment (PLI) or social communication disorder (SCD). Some children who have PLI also show mild social impairments associated with high-functioning autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There is little robust evidence of effectiveness of speech-language interventions which target the language, pragmatic or social communication needs of these children.
AIMS: To evaluate the effectiveness of an intensive manualized soc

BACKGROUND: SJ733, a newly developed inhibitor of P. falciparum ATP4, has a favorable safety profile and rapid antiparasitic effect but insufficient duration to deliver a single-dose cure of malaria. We investigated the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of a multidose SJ733 regimen and a single-dose pharmacoboost approach using cobicistat to inhibit CYP3A4, thereby increasing exposure.
METHODS: Two multidose unboosted cohorts (n = 9) (SJ733, 300 mg and 600 mg daily for 3 days) followed by three single-dose boosted cohorts combining SJ733 (n = 18) (75-, 300-, or 600-mg single dose) wi

BACKGROUND: Fever is one of the most common clinical symptoms of respiratory diseases in children. Once the child has a fever, parents and caregivers are mainly concerned that the child may have a febrile convulsion. A lack of cognitive ability not only leads to anxiety but also aggravates or delays the time of children's medical treatment and even seriously affects the prognosis because of improper management of fever patients. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the degree of mastery of knowledge related to febrile convulsions, implement targeted guidance and health education, and ensure th

BACKGROUND: Chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS), historically known as DiGeorge syndrome, is a common microdeletion disorder characterized by a wide range of multisystem manifestations. While Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) is increasingly used as a first-tier diagnostic tool for complex infant presentations, it has limited sensitivity for detecting copy-number variants such as microdeletions. Parental consanguinity adds further diagnostic complexity by increasing the likelihood of co-occurring single-gene variants.

INTRODUCTION: The molecular mechanisms underlying pressure adaptation remain largely unexplored, despite their significance for understanding biological adaptation and improving sterilization methods in the food and beverage industry. The heat shock response leads to a global stabilization of the proteome. Prior research suggested that the heat shock regulon may exhibit a transcriptional response to high-pressure stress.
METHODS: In this study, we investigated the pressure-dependent heat shock response in E. coli strains using plasmid-borne green fluorescent protein (GFP) promoter fusions and

Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV) has haunted the poultry industry with severe, prolonged immunosuppression of chickens when infected at an early age and can easily lead to other secondary infections. Understanding the pathogenic mechanisms could lead to effective prevention and control of Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD). Evidence suggests that the N-terminal domain of polymerase in segment B plays an important role, but it is not clear which part or residual is crucial for the pathogenicity. Using a reverse genetics technique, a molecular clone (rNN1172) of the parental vvIBDV strain NN1

BACKGROUND: Pycnodysostosis is an autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia, the prevalence of which is estimated to be low (1 per million). Nevertheless, in recent years we have found 27 affected individuals from 22 families in Ceará State, a region of the Brazilian Northeast, giving a local prevalence of 3 per million. This local prevalence associated with a high parental consanguinity, suggesting a possible founder effect, prompted us to perform a molecular investigation of these families to test this hypothesis.
METHODS: The CTSK gene was sequenced by the Sanger method in the patients and th

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease is a neglected illness, with limited treatments, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. Two drugs are prescribed to treat the disease, nifurtimox and benznidazole, which have been previously reported to have limited efficacy and the appearance of resistance by T. cruzi. Acquisition of drug-resistant phenotypes is a complex physiological process based on single or multiple changes of the genes involved, probably in its mechanisms of action.
RESULTS: The differential genes expression of a sensitive Trypanosoma cruzi strain and its induced in vitro benznidazole-resi
