Only a few published case of fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) have commented on the changes in the overlying skin. There are descriptions of individual cases with cutaneous hyperpigmentation, hypertrichosis and hyperhidrosis. It is interesting to describe our case because, to our knowledge, the altered pigmentation of the overlying skin, with hairs on the surface, and eccrine gland hyperplasia combined with abortive hair follicles has not been reported together in association with the FHI. We recommend that all the biopsies must be excisional including overlying skin, thus the epidermal and

Skin abnormalities in a patient with newly diagnosed MELAS syndrome are reported. He presented with scaly, pruritic, diffuse erythema with reticular pigmentation on his entire body. Moderate hypertrichosis was also noted on the lower extremities. Thickened arrector muscles with longitudinal and cross sections were seen in the dermis. Analysis of mitochondrial DNA in a biopsy specimen from the biceps brachii disclosed the presence of an A-to-G point mutation at nucleotide pair 3243. Electron microscopy revealed marked increase in the number of morphologically abnormal mitochondria in the arrect

Advances in laser therapy have led to novel therapeutic approaches to common pediatric skin conditions. As a non-invasive alternative to surgical options, laser therapy is efficacious in treating a broad range of conditions, from vascular and pigmented lesions to tattoo and hair removal. This paper reviews the basic mechanics of laser therapy, its role in common pigmented pediatric dermatoses, and special considerations for this unique age group.

Following SARS-CoV-2 infection in humans, there is upregulation of proinflammatory molecules S100 calcium binding protein B (S100B), high-mo … imiting step of pigmentation. Hence, the marked elevation of the biological effectors that decrease skin pigmentation may also reduce pigmentation in MMs, resulting in amelanotic or hypopigmented lesions. Freckles or ephelides are hyperpigmented spots observed on skin surface mainly in European and Asian populations. Easy recognition and external visibility make prediction of ephelides, the potentially useful target in the field of forensic DNA phenotyping. Prediction of freckles would be a step forward in sketching the physical appearance of unknown perpetrators or decomposed cadavers for the forensic DNA intelligence purposes. Freckles are especially common in people with pale skin and red hair and therefore it is expected that predisposition to freckles may partially share the genetic backgr

Pigmented and irritated types of seborrheic keratosis (SK) can be confused with melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, or pigmented actinic keratosis. Dermoscopic examination may give many clues for the diagnosis of SK, but in equivocal cases the accurate diagnosis can only be made by microscopic features. Herein, we report a striking, isolated pigmented and inflamed SK, located on the waist in an elderly man. Although the duration of the lesion was not clear, a recent change in color was reported. The striking dark pigmentation and lack of visible characteristic features for SK led us to consider ot

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is pivotal in rheumatology and dermatology for its potent antimalarial and immunomodulatory properties. Though generally safe, HCQ causes cutaneous adverse reactions ranging from mild pigmentation to life-threatening severe cutaneous adverse reactions. This review synthesizes data from studies indexed in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library through December 2025. Search keywords included "hydroxychloroquine," "adverse reactions," "skin lesions" (eg, pigmentation, maculopapular rash, psoriasiform eruption), and "mechanisms." We included original stud

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Riehl's melanosis is a difficult-to-treat condition characterized by persisting dermal hyperpigmentation. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a histology-specific targeted therapy for Riehl's melanosis.
METHODS: Skin biopsy samples of Riehl's melanosis were assessed to identify histology-specific targets for treatment. Subsequently, the efficacy of a combination involving a fractional picosecond laser and a pulsed dye laser (PDL) targeting the dermal melanin and vessels, respectively, was evaluated. Clinical improvement was assessed using the dermal pigmentation a

Vitiligo is a chronic, acquired autoimmune pigmentary skin disease, most times it can be diagnosed clinically. Dermoscopy can confirm vitiligo in a non-invasive way. It is a diagnostic technique that visualizes sub-macroscopic morphological structures which correspond with specific histological structures. It detects subtle changes in the pigment pattern, evaluates vitiligo activity, attempts of re-pigmentation, leucotrichia, and differentiates it from other hypo pigmentary disorders. Most dermatoscopic clues used to assess vitiligo activity are found at the perifollicular level in the center

Pigmentary complication by contact immunotherapy (CI) for alopecia areata (AA) has been reported but its pathophysiology remains unknown. To characterize pigmentary complication by CI and its pathophysiology, we examined the incidence of hyperpigmentation in 186 consecutive patients treated with CI using diphenylcyclopropenone. From clinical data of AA totalis (AAT) or universalis (AAU) patients (n = 78), we studied the correlations between this complication and age, sex, atopic background, duration and treatment responsiveness, duration of CI, final concentration of diphenylcyclopropenone and

A NATURAL PHENOMENON: Pregnancy is a period of hormone, immunological, metabolic and vascular changes. Modifications of the skin, mucosa and integuments are therefore physiological. The modifications are in pigmentation, but also affect nevi, the connective tissue, vessels and appendices. Modifications in pigmentation exist in more than 9 pregnancies out of 10 in the form of local melanosis. Melasma, also know as the 'pregnancy mask' or chloasma, is fairly rare. These disorders in pigmentation are also observed in black-skinned women. Changes in nevi (darker brown colour, increase in size) occ

A case of argyriasis in a 45-year-old woman is reported. When the patient was 34 she took for a period of 25 months a silver-containing pharmacological product (colloidal silicon with 0.5 percent of silver) in order to treat an intestinal dyspepsia with diarrheic episodes. A few months after discontinuing the treatment a cutaneous pigmentation of a greyish-blue color extending over the whole body, developed. There was also discoloration of the nails, hair, and of the oral and gingival mucosae. The differential diagnosis with other conditions that also develop anomalies of cutaneous pigmentatio

Many diseases, as well as side effects of drugs, manifest themselves through skin symptoms. Skin is a complex tissue that hosts various specialized cell types and performs many roles including physical barrier, immune and sensory functions. Therefore, modeling skin in vitro presents technical challenges for tissue engineering. Since the first attempts at engineering human epidermis in 1970s, there has been a growing interest in generating full-thickness skin constructs mimicking physiological functions by incorporating various skin components, such as vasculature and melanocytes for pigmentati

Primary intracranial malignant melanoma is a very rare and highly aggressive tumor with poor prognosis. A 66-year-old female patient presented a headache that had been slowly progressing for several months. A large benign pigmented skin lesion was found on her back. A brain MRI showed multiple linear signal changes with branching pattern and strong enhancement in the temporal lobe. The cytological and immunohiostochemical cerebrospinal fluid examination confirmed malignant melanoma. A biopsy confirmed that the pigmented skin lesion on the back and the conjunctiva were benign nevi. We report a

Pigmentary abberations of the skin, mucosa and epidermal appendages are common side-effects after systemic treatment with chemotherapeutic agents. These pigment changes appear in different patterns and are partly quite typical for the applied chemotherapeutic drug. The pathogenesis of the different skin pigmentations are not well known. The most often discussed causes are the stimulation of melanocytes, involvement of the tyrosinase enzyme system and thrombophlebitis with postinflammatory hyperpigmentation by the aggressive substances. Nail discolorations are mainly due to direct toxic effects…
