We present a case of a 46-year-old female presenting with syncope. Echocardiography initially showed a right atrial mass. Further evaluation revealed a mass arising from the fundus of the uterus, with a tumor thrombus in the left gonadal vein, extending into the left renal vein and through the inferior vena cava (IVC) into the right heart across the tricuspid valve. She was managed with surgical resection, and postoperative pathology was consistent with intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL). IVL is a rare uterine smooth muscle cell neoplasm which extends into the venous system. Gynecological tumors

Adenomyoma of the ileum is a rare condition. A 68-year-old Japanese man presented with nausea and distension of the abdomen. Enhanced computed tomography of his abdomen revealed wall thickening in the ileum and dilation of the proximal small intestine. Open laparotomy was performed to find the cause of the patient's small bowel obstruction, and a tumor was found in the ileum, which had resulted in intussusception. The tumor and 20 cm of the adjacent ileum were resected. The resected specimen displayed a macroscopic appearance suggestive of a submucosal tumor. Histopathological evaluation showe

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors GISTs are cellular spindle, or epithelioid tumors that occur in the stomach, intestine, and rarely in the esophagus. A 61-year-old man was complaining of resistant dry cough with dysphagia for one month duration. Upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopic examination showed a polypoid mass 30 cm from the incisors obstructing 50% of the lumen, where multiple biopsies were taken. Magnetic resonance imaging MRI showed a mass in the wall of the esophagus extending into the thoracic cavity. Histologically, the stained sections with the routine hematoxylin and eosin as w

Six myxoid leiomyosarcomas of the uterus are described. Four were located within the myometrium and two lay predominantly within the broad ligament but appeared to have arisen in the outer myometrium. These tumors were characterized grossly by a gelatinous appearance and an apparently circumscribed border. On microscopical examination, however, they were observed to invade adjacent tissue and in two cases the lumens of veins. All the tumors contained copious amounts of myxomatous stroma. Although it was difficult to establish the nature of the neoplastic cells in some areas of these tumors, bo

The burden of oxidative stress is increased in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, whether the intra-cellular mechanisms controlling the oxidant/anti-oxidant balance in structural airway cells such as airway smooth muscle in COPD is altered is unclear. We sought to determine whether the expression of the NADPH oxidase (NOX)-4 is increased in airway smooth muscle in COPD both in vivo and primary cells in vitro and its role in hydrogen peroxide-induced reactive oxygen species generation. We found that in vivo NOX4 expression was up-regulated in the airway smooth muscle bundle

Experiments were performed to determine if differences in porphyrin photosensitivity could be observed for cells with varying efficiency in DNA damage repair, as well as for cells which make up components of the vasculature. Photofrin II is undergoing current clinical evaluation for photodynamic therapy of solid tumors, and therefore the retention, dark toxicity, and photosensitizing effects of this drug on human DNA repair-deficient fibroblasts (ataxia telangiectasia and xeroderma pigmentosum) were compared to normal human fibroblasts. In addition, bovine cells of endothelial, smooth muscle,

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors, known as PEComas, are rare mesenchymal neoplasms with dual melanocytic and smooth muscle differentiation, whose pathophysiology and clinical behavior are still being studied. Their occurrence in the gastrointestinal tract is exceptional, particularly in children. We present the case of a 7-year-old girl who consulted for hematemesis and severe anemia. Imaging studies and digestive endoscopy revealed a gastric mass initially suspected to be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Surgical resection was performed, and the definitive diagnosis by pathologica

Uterine leiomyomas are the most common gynecological tumors in premenopausal women. While the lung is the most common extrauterine organ afflicted, benign metastasizing leiomyomas (BML) of the heart are rarities. We report an incidental finding of a cardiac mass in a 36-year-old woman who presented to the Emergency Department after a motor vehicle accident. CT scan of the chest revealed 2 well-circumscribed pulmonary nodules and a filling defect in the right ventricle. Echocardiogram showed a 4 cm mass attached to the right ventricular (RV) septum. The cardiac tumor was resected and showed ben

BACKGROUND: Intracardiac leiomyomatosis (ICL), a rare condition characterized by intracardiac tumors, can be associated with uterine leiomyomas. Early diagnosis is crucial due to the risk of severe cardiac complications.
CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old woman presented with severe liver failure and heart failure caused by a large right ventricular leiomyoma. The patient was managed with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support and subsequent surgical resection of the tumor. Histological examination confirmed a benign smooth muscle tumor.
DISCUSSION: This case highlights the…

BACKGROUND: Myoepithelial tumors have been widely described as a rare form of salivary gland neoplasm, although currently soft-tissue phenotypes have also been identified. These are tumors composed entirely of myoepithelial cells that exhibit a dual epithelial and smooth muscle phenotype. The occurrence of myoepithelial tumors within the central nervous system is also extremely rare, with only a few cases reported. Treatment options include surgical resection, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or a combination of these approaches.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors present a case of soft-tissue myoepith

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are rare and benign tumors that can occur at any anatomical site. GCTs are thought to originate from nerve cells, particularly Schwann cells. Their name derives from the fact that an accumulation of cytoplasmic lysosomes imparts the tumor with a granular appearance. They are most commonly observed in the oral cavity, skin and subcutaneous tissue, breast, and respiratory tract. Granular cell tumors rarely affect the gastrointestinal tract. We report a 58-year-old female with a past medical history of hypertension, mitral valve prolapse, and depression who presented f

We report a case of angiomyofibroblastoma which arose in the vulva of a 46-year-old woman. The tumor formed a large pedunculated polypoid mass, measuring 14 cm in maximal dimension, which hung down from the right labium majus. It consisted of a dense or loose proliferation of fibroblastic and myofibroblastic cells on an edematous background, and the tumor cells occasionally exhibited an increased cellularity around well-developed, medium-sized or small blood vessels. In small areas, conglomerates of capillaries exhibited an appearance resembling that of capillary hemangioma. Tumor cells were i

Epithelioid leiomyomas of the uterus, unlike ordinary leiomyomas, show substantial epithelial differentiation. No chromosome abnormalities have been reported in uterine epithelioid leiomyomas before. We analyzed short-term cultures from five such tumors and detected abnormal karyotypes in four. A del(7) (q21.2q31.2) was found in two tumors, in one as the only change and in the other as a secondary aberration acquired during clonal evolution. Rearrangement of chromosomal band 12q15, another of the cytogenetic hallmarks of ordinary uterine leiomyomas, was seen in the form of a t(10;12) in one tu

Hamartoma is one of the most common benign tumors in the lung, and most of the lung hamartomas are located in the parenchyma. This report reviews 24 cases with this kind of tumor. The male-female ratio was 1.4:1 and the mean age 46.4 years. Sixteen patients of the 24 were asymptomatic, while in the remainder cases chest pain or distress, cough, short breath or hemoptysis were presented. Lung hamartoma is usually composed of cartilage, fat, smooth muscle and respiratory epithelium. X-ray findings of the parenchymal type in these cases were characterized by a round or oval sharply outlined mass,

This is the 28th case report of jugular foramen neurinoma in the world. A 24-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with complaints of dizziness and impaired balance. Neurological examination revealed IX, XI and XII cranial nerves and cerebellar involvements, e.g., Brun's-Cushing nystagmus, curtain sign on the left, weakness of the left sternocleidomastoid muscle and deviation of the tongue to the left, accompanied with atrophy. Choked discs and other signs of increased intracranial pressure were not recognized. There were no cerebellar symptoms except impaired balance and nystagmus. Latera

An 8-year-old spayed female British bulldog was presented with vomiting, hyporexia, and large-bowel diarrhea. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a focal colonic mass with an intussusception located immediately oral to the mass. The intussusception encompassed the ascending and transverse colon and was non-reducible. Colonic resection and anastomosis were completed to include the intussusception and colonic mass. Histopathological examination of the mass demonstrated a spindle cell neoplasm arising within the muscular wall of the intussuscepted segment that obliterated normal architecture. Mild-to-m

Renal leiomyoma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor. It arises from the smooth muscle cells of the kidney and renal capsule is its most common location. Small tumor may be asymptomatic and usually appears as a well circumscribed peripherally located solid mass. Large tumor may manifest with pain, palpable flank mass or hematuria. Intersecting fascicles of spindle cells showing immunoreactivity to actin or desmin are characteristic histologic features. We present a case of giant renal leiomyoma in a 20-year-old female with chief complaints of abdominal discomfort and lump in her left side of abd

We describe the clinicopathological features of a solid variant of orbital angioleiomyoma. A review of clinical records, diagnostic, and radiographic studies combined with histopathological evaluation with standard histochemical staining and immunohistochemistry was conducted. A 22-year-old male patient presented with a mass in the region of the left lacrimal gland that was gradually increasing over the past 2 years. Radiological and clinical examinations showed no signs suspicious of a malignancy and fine needle aspiration cytology was inconclusive. Therefore, an excision biopsy was performed
