Impact of Auditory Integrative Training on Transforming Growth Factor-β1 and Its Effect on Behavioral and Social Emotions in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the impact of auditory integrative training (AIT) on the inflammatory biomarker transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 and to assess its effect on social behavior in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 15 patients (14 males and 1 female) with ASD aged 3-12 years were recruited. All were screened for autism using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Plasma levels of TGF-β1 were measured in all patients using a sandwich enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) immediately and 1 and 3 months

No Fixed Address, Still in Need: Coordinating Inpatient Rehabilitation for People Experiencing Homelessness: A Case Series.

Homelessness significantly hinders access to inpatient rehabilitation services, particularly for individuals with complex medical and functional needs. This case series presents three persons experiencing homelessness with disabilities-due to amputation, functional neurological disorder, and stroke-who require coordinated rehabilitation care. Each case illustrates the compounded barriers persons experiencing homelessness face, including lack of stable housing, limited access to follow-up care, and fragmented healthcare and social service systems. Through interdisciplinary collaboration involvi

Perinatal women in substance use disorder treatment: Interest in partnering with family and friends to support recovery needs.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal women treated for substance use disorder (SUD) face considerable barriers to recovery that might be ameliorated through activation of community support. OBJECTIVES: This descriptive study evaluated the presence of drug-free family and friends in the social networks of perinatal women treated for SUD. It also assessed the interest of these women to partner with network members to mobilize support across several recovery needs. METHODS: Social network interviews were conducted with 40 pre- and post-partum women treated at the Center for Addiction and Pregnancy (CAP) in Ba

Intersex/Differences of sex development: Human rights at the intersection of cure and care.

Intersex people are viewed from the medicalised lens of having a "disorder" of sex development rather than a difference in sex development. This inherent indifference to diversity is also visible in LGBTQIA+ advocacy, as they were initially excluded from the Yogyakarta Principles promoting the human rights of sexual and gender minorities. This paper attempts to explore the issues of discrimination, social exclusion, and unnecessary medical treatments through the lens of the Human Rights in Patient Care framework to advance the human rights of the intersex community and highlight the need for t

Exploring the relation between posttraumatic stress disorder and interpersonal outcomes: The role of social acknowledgment and trauma type.

OBJECTIVES: Research demonstrates consistent relations between posttrauma symptoms and interpersonal dysfunction. The current study examined the extent to which perceptions of community rejection account for the relation between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and interpersonal outcomes in students exposed to assaultive and nonassaultive trauma. METHOD: Participants (N = 137; 66.4% female; M = 20 years) completed a trauma history interview, questionnaires assessing symptom severity, social disapproval, and interpersonal outcomes. RESULTS: Assault survivors (n = 83) reported greater symp

Baseline symptom severity and response to multisession cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation in adolescents and young adults with autism: an exploratory analysis.

BACKGROUND: Identifying baseline clinical characteristics associated with treatment response is crucial for optimising intervention strategies in people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study aimed to distinguish responders from non-responders to a multisession prefrontal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) protocol and to explore how baseline individual characteristics relate to treatment outcomes. METHODS: Using complementary inferential statistics and predictive modelling approaches, we analysed baseline clinical characteristics of adolescents and young adults with ASD

Caregiver's Perspectives on the Healthcare Experiences of Children With Behaviour-Related Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Social Pediatrics focuses on targeting and mitigating the effects of the social determinants of health on a child's well-being and development. Negative health outcomes have been seen in children who have faced poverty, food insecurity, inadequate housing, and traumatic events. In particular, children who come from socioeconomically disadvantaged households are more likely to develop behavioural problems. The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of caregivers for children with a behaviour-related disorder. This includes children affected by attention, academic, and so

A Community-Defined Approach to Address Trauma Among Cambodian Immigrants and Refugees.

Asian American and Pacific Islanders are one of the fastest growing and most diverse groups in the United States. Yet, they are often aggregated as a single group, masking within-group differences in rates of disease and demographic characteristics commonly associated with elevated health risk. While more than four decades have passed since the Khmer Rouge genocide, Cambodians continue to experience trauma-related psychiatric disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder and major depression. Funded by the California Department of Public Health Office of Health Equity, the Community Well

Compensatory deficits following rejection: the role of social anxiety in disrupting affiliative behavior.

BACKGROUND: Managing perceived or actual social rejection is an important facet of meeting basic needs for affiliation. Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by significant distress and debilitation relating to affiliation and recent work suggests higher levels of social anxiety symptoms may adversely affect responses to social rejection. This study examined emotional and behavioral responding to a social rejection stressor to explore whether social anxiety moderates the effects of social rejection on prosocial compensatory behaviors. METHODS: Individuals (N=37) evaluated on social a

Behavioral Tests for Mouse Models of Autism: An Argument for the Inclusion of Cerebellum-Controlled Motor Behaviors.

Mouse models of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have been interrogated using a variety of behavioral tests in order to understand the symptoms of ASD. However, the hallmark behaviors that are classically affected in ASD - deficits in social interaction and communication as well as the occurrence of repetitive behaviors - do not have direct murine equivalents. Thus, it is critical to identify the caveats that come with modeling a human disorder in mice. The most commonly used behavioral tests represent complex cognitive processes based on largely unknown brain circuitry. Motor impairments provid

Channelopathy pathogenesis in autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a syndrome that affects normal brain development and is characterized by impaired social interaction as well as verbal and non-verbal communication and by repetitive, stereotypic behavior. ASD is a complex disorder arising from a combination of multiple genetic and environmental factors that are independent from racial, ethnic and socioeconomical status. The high heritability of ASD suggests a strong genetic basis for the disorder. Furthermore, a mounting body of evidence implies a role of various ion channel gene defects (channelopathies) in the pathogenesis

Clinical implications of a link between fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of the animal and human research literature on the link between fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHOD: We conducted a comprehensive literature review that addressed the history of, and current research on, fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and FASD, as well as that on ADHD in children. RESULTS: In animal and human research, there is emerging clinical, neuropsychological, and neurochemical evidence of a link between FASD and ADHD. CONCLUSIONS: The evidence of the link between these 2 conditions has impl

The impact of self-stigma on self-esteem among persons with different mental disorders.

BACKGROUND: This study assumes that just as public stigma differs depending on types of mental disorder, so too does self-stigma. AIMS: This study aims to compare self-stigma among persons with schizophrenia, alcohol use disorder and gambling disorder, and thereby analyze the effects of self-stigma on their self-esteem. METHODS: A total of 321 Korean adults involved in community mental services for schizophrenia (N = 116), alcohol use disorder (N = 102) and gambling disorder (N = 103) were surveyed (Mage = 40.74, standard deviation (SD) = 10.10, 83.8% male, 16.2% female). [Investigation of the behavioural phenotype of parents of autistic children through the new FAQ self-report].

INTRODUCTION: Autism is characterized by impairments in communication and socialization and by the presence of circumscribed and stereotyped interest. Previous studies have shown that genetic mechanisms may enhance the vulnerability to autism. These mechanisms are complex and may involve the combination of several genes, in interaction with the environment. The genetic mechanism involved in the vulnerability to autism may also concern other disorders and some features, with enhanced prevalence in relatives of autistic patients. It has been shown, for example, that the frequency of language dis

Anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder 9 months after perinatal loss.

OBJECTIVE: Perinatal loss (stillbirth after 20 weeks of gestational age or infant death in the first month) impacts one to two infants per hundred live births in the United States and can be a devastating experience for parents. We assessed prevalence of anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) among bereaved and live-birth mothers. METHODS: We collaborated with the Michigan Department of Community Health to survey Michigan mothers with perinatal death or live birth. We measured symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, panic disorder and OCD using validated wr

Psychiatric disorders in women with bulimia nervosa and their first-degree relatives: effects of comorbid substance dependence.

OBJECTIVE: Women with bulimia nervosa (BN) and comorbid substance dependence often display impulsive behaviors. We assessed Axis I and II psychiatric diagnoses in their first-degree relatives in order to understand the etiological factors that may contribute to this subtype of BN. METHOD: We used contemporary family-epidemiological methodology to compare the lifetime prevalence of psychiatric disorders among 47 women with BN and 44 non-eating-disordered community control women, and their first-degree relatives (177 and 190, respectively). BN probands were stratified by the presence (n = 20) o

Seeing it in others versus doing it yourself: Social desirability judgements and conversation production data from autistic and non-autistic children.

On average, groups of autistic individuals are more likely than groups of non-autistic individuals to exhibit unconventional conversational behaviours. We examined autistic and non-autistic children's social impressions of unconventional responding, as well as actual conversational behaviours in the same participants. Across two studies, 36 autistic and 36 non-autistic matched 9-13-year-olds listened to conversational vignettes which manipulated the relevance and timing of responses produced by the speaker. They then rated the speaker's social desirability. We also measured the content and lat

Social impairments in chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS): autism spectrum disorder or a different endophenotype?

High prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has been reported in 22q11.2DS, although this has been based solely on parent report measures. This study describes the presence of ASD using a procedure more similar to that used in clinical practice by incorporating history (Social Communication Questionnaire) AND a standardized observation measure (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) and suggests that ASD is not as common as previously reported in 22q11.2DS. Differences in methodology, along with comorbid conditions such as anxiety, likely contribute to false elevations in ASD prevalenc
