Dissociation of mirroring and mentalising systems in autism.

The role of mirror neuron systems and mentalising systems in causing poor social and communication skills in individuals with autistic spectrum conditions is hotly debated. We studied 18 adults with autistic spectrum conditions in comparison to 19 age and IQ matched typical individuals. Behavioural assessments revealed difficulties in mental state attribution and action comprehension in the autism sample. We examined brain responses when observing rational and irrational hand actions, because these actions engage mirror and mentalising components of the social brain respectively. Both typical

Barriers and opportunities to accessing social support in the transition from community to prison: a qualitative interview study with incarcerated individuals in Northern Norway.

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated individuals have poor mental health compared to the general population. Social support has a beneficial effect on mental health. The buffering model proposes that social support facilitates coping under stressful conditions, while the main effects model suggests that belonging to social networks and having positive social interactions are beneficial for mental health. Prisons are a highly interesting context for studying social support, as imprisonment is perceived as stressful and disrupts social relationships and the availability of support. This study aims to explor

Examining Social Support and Digital Literacy Among Caregivers of People Living With Dementia Receiving Hospice Services.

BackgroundAlthough previous research has highlighted the protective effect of social support in caregiving contexts, further investigation is needed to understand its complex roles in modifying and explaining the impact of caregiver stressors. This cross-sectional study assessed family caregivers' social support, digital literacy, and caregiving-related stressors, examining their relationships and impact on mental health outcomes (anxiety and depressive symptoms). Specifically, we investigated (1) whether digital literacy interacted with stressors to influence caregivers' perceived social supp

Distinguishing autism spectrum disorder and social anxiety: Exploring adaptive skills among university students.

High comorbidity and diagnostic overlap between autism spectrum disorder and social anxiety disorder have been documented. We examined if differences in adaptive behavior, essential for daily functioning, could differentiate these conditions among young university students. Eighty-eight autistic and 123 non-autistic undergraduates were categorized into four groups: autistic individuals: with low (n = 26)/high (n = 62) social anxiety (SA) symptoms; non-autistic: with low (n = 63)/high (n = 60) SA. The Adaptive Behavior Assessment System (ABAS) was utilized to assess three domains of adaptive sk

Improving emotion regulation of social exclusion in depression-prone individuals: a tDCS study targeting right VLPFC.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence has indicated that right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (RVLPFC) is critical in down-regulating emotional responses to social exclusion, and that depression is accompanied by social emotional dysregulation associated with reduced lateral prefrontal engagement. This study used anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to examine whether stimulating RVLPFC could improve emotional down-regulation of social exclusion in individuals with high depressive mood (DM). METHODS: A total of 96 high and 94 low DM individuals received active or sham tDCS while view

The effects of context processing on social cognition impairments in adults with Asperger's syndrome.

Social cognition-the basis of all communicative and otherwise interpersonal relationships-is embedded in specific contextual circumstances which shape intrinsic meanings. This domain is compromised in the autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), including Asperger's syndrome (AS) (DSM-V). However, the few available reports of social cognition skills in adults with AS have largely neglected the effects of contextual factors. Moreover, previous studies on this population have also failed to simultaneously (a) assess multiple social cognition domains, (b) examine executive functions, (c) follow strict s

Letter to the Editor regarding "Social media use and roles of self-objectification, self-compassion and body image concerns: a systematic review".

The systematic review by Sarda et al. synthesizes relationships among social media use, self-objectification, self-compassion, and body image concerns while evaluating evidence relevant to the revised objectification theory model proposed by Wollast and colleagues. This letter extends the authors' call for more rigorous examination of social media use by arguing for greater specificity in conceptualizing digitally mediated appearance experiences. Rather than treating social media as a single exposure or relying on a broad passive/active distinction, we propose examining configurations of conte

Social isolation of aged mice drives dramatic release of inflammatory lipoxygenase-derived oxylipins.

Oxylipins, signalling molecules derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids, act as key mediators controlling inflammatory processes. Ageing fuels the disruption of this network, promoting inflammageing. Social isolation, a common feature of ageing, may contribute to the emergence of pro-inflammatory responses, further aggravating conditions like cognitive decline and frailty. Here, we studied how repeated social isolation impacts inflammation-related oxylipin profiles in seven different organs and serum of aged mice. Additionally, we explored physical exercise as a tool to ameliorate age- and is

Uncertainty, Not Mental Content, Drives Dorsomedial Prefrontal Engagement during Inferences about Others.

To navigate social life, humans make inferences about the intentions, beliefs, emotions, and personalities of other people, i.e., they mentalize. A network of brain regions consistently engages more during mentalizing than during carefully controlled comparison tasks, sometimes cited as evidence of domain-specific mentalizing processes. Here we investigated the possibility that engagement of these regions during mentalizing may be due to uncertainty. We scanned 46 participants (33 female, 13 male) using fMRI as they made mental and non-mental inferences (about human minds, human bodies, and ph

Functional Hearing Loss and Social Engagement Among Medicare Beneficiaries.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is common in older adults and limits communication. We investigated the independent association between functional hearing loss and social engagement in a nationally representative sample of older adults. METHODS: Using data from the 2015 Medicare Current Beneficiaries Survey, we modeled the cross-sectional association between self-reported hearing ability and limitation in social activity over the past month using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: The majority of the study population was female (54.8%) and non-Hispanic white (74.3%). Participants (40.4%) r

Attentional biases in social anxiety: an investigation using the inattentional blindness paradigm.

One line of research has examined attentional bias as a potential maintenance factor in social anxiety using cognitive experiment paradigms. The present study sought to examine the utility of the inattentional blindness (IB) paradigm for assessing attentional bias in social anxiety. Unlike other existing paradigms such as the emotional Stroop or dot-probe tasks, the IB paradigm has the advantage of eliminating the individual's expectation and intention to search for social cues, which would reduce strategic or effortful responses. Two independent experiments were conducted using college studen

Impact of adolescent social Isolation on increased risk for alcohol intake and aversion-resistant drinking in males and females.

RATIONALE: Adverse experiences during adolescence, especially social isolation, increases risk for alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Previous rodent studies of adolescent social isolation (ASI) encompassed all stages of adolescence and/or maintained isolation into adulthood, limiting identification of vulnerable stages of adolescence. Utilizing males only, or combining the sexes, also may have contributed to contradictory findings. OBJECTIVES: Investigate social isolation restricted to discrete adolescent stages in combination with re-socialization and then persistent alcohol drinking. Determine

SADXAI: Predicting social anxiety disorder using multiple interpretable artificial intelligence techniques.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD), also known as social phobia, is a psychological condition in which a person has a persistent and overwhelming fear of being negatively judged or observed by other individuals. This fear can affect them at work, in relationships and other social activities. The intricate combination of several environmental and biological factors is the reason for the onset of this mental condition. SAD is diagnosed using a test called the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-5), which is based on several physical, emotional and demographic symptoms.

Correlates of verbal and physical violence experienced and perpetrated among cisgender college women: serial cross-sections during one year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Violence against women is a prevalent, preventable public health crisis. COVID-19 stressors and pandemic countermeasures may have exacerbated violence against women. Cisgender college women are particularly vulnerable to violence. Thus, we examined the prevalence and correlates of verbal/physical violence experienced and perpetrated among cisgender women enrolled at a New York City college over one year during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: From a prospective cohort study, we analyzed data self-reported quarterly (T1, T2, T3, T4) between December 2020 and December 2021. Using g

Incorporating Virtual Reality Agents During a Dichotic Speech Reception Task: Insights From the Heart.

OBJECTIVES: Listening effort is moderated by not only task difficulty, but also success importance. In real communication scenarios, success importance varies based upon the social context. However, in the laboratory, it can be challenging to manipulate social context without compromising experimental control. Outside of hearing sciences, studies have applied virtual reality (VR) to incorporate social context in a controlled and repeatable manner. Several of these studies have demonstrated that social manipulations in VR can reliably elicit changes in cardiovascular measures. Here, we investig
