Social Media Use and Openness to "Sugar Relationships": Cultural Tightness-Looseness as a Moderator Across 22 Countries.

Social media use has been widely linked to sexual attitudes, yet it remains unclear whether its association with openness to sugar relationships is uniform across countries or contingent on country-level normative contexts. In the present study, we examined whether country-level cultural tightness-looseness moderated the relationship between social media use and openness to sugar relationships across 22 countries. Openness to sugar relationships was conceptualized as a manifestation of a broader orientation toward sexual-economic exchange. Using data from 22,292 adult women drawn from a large

Associations amongst poverty, loneliness, and a defensive symptom cluster characterised by pain, fatigue, and low mood.

OBJECTIVE: Perceived social isolation is associated with increased pain, fatigue, and depression. Other research has shown that pain and depression are more common in individuals experiencing low socio-economic status, and that social relationships are especially important for buffering the negative health effects of low socio-economic status. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: We used a 20-country, cross-sectional sample of 24,504 respondents to the European Social Survey 7. Multilevel linear regression was used to test for the effects of loneliness, income decile, and their interactio

Survivor Perceptions of Supporters' Social Reactions in the Initial Months Following Sexual Assault: A Daily Diary Study.

Sexual assault survivors receive a variety of positive and negative social reactions when they seek support from friends, family, or others close to them (i.e., informal supporters). However, past research demonstrates that survivors' perceptions of these social reactions are more varied than suggested by their traditional categorization as "positive" or "negative." Although survivors experiencing elevated posttraumatic stress (PTS) and alcohol use may be at especially high risk of receiving "negative" reactions and experiencing poorer recovery outcomes, it is unclear to what degree these surv

Age-Related Changes in the Amygdala From In Utero to Early Childhood: Association With Social and Cognitive Outcomes.

The amygdala is a key element of the limbic system. It is involved in emotional processing controlling responses to social, affective, or motivational stimuli, facilitating interaction with the surrounding environment. Given its importance in typical development, understanding early normative growth patterns in the amygdala can provide insights into the origins of emotional and social behaviors. This study examined age-related differences in amygdala volume from the fetal to early childhood period across six cohorts from in utero to the first 4 years of life, and explored the association with

Should Parents Only Use One Language with Their Autistic Children? The Relations Between Multilingualism, Children's Social Skills, and Parent-Child Communication.

PURPOSE: Parents of autistic children are often advised to use only one language to simplify their child's language acquisition. Often this recommendation orients towards the geographically predominant language, which may cause difficulties especially for minority-language families. On the other hand, scientific evidence suggests that multilingualism does not hinder language acquisition and that communicating in exclusively foreign languages may even impede social interaction. Therefore, we investigated how parent language use is linked to the social skills of 68 autistic children and to their…

Association between malocclusion severity and social anxiety, self-esteem in adolescents: A cross-sectional study.

This study investigates the association between malocclusion severity and social anxiety and self-esteem levels in adolescents and explores factors associated with heterogeneity in these psychological outcomes. A cross-sectional study design was employed. A convenience sample of 190 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years, recruited from the orthodontic department of a hospital from June 2023 to December 2025, was enrolled. Malocclusion severity was assessed using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need-Dental Health Component (IOTN-DHC) and categorized into mild, moderate, and severe groups. Social a

Who Are People with Psychosis Delusional about? A Study of Social Agents in the Phenomenology of Delusions.

INTRODUCTION: Delusions frequently involve strong beliefs about, or interactions with, illusory social agents. Although such agents have been systematically described in hallucinations, few studies have investigated their nature and identity in delusions. METHODS: We identified 205 electronic mental health records describing the content of delusions from the Clinical Record Interactive Search platform at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Delusional content was classified as non-social, implicitly social, or explicitly social. Descriptions of illusory social agents from explicitl

Ontogeny and social context regulate the circadian activity patterns of Lake Malawi cichlids.

Activity patterns tend to be highly stereotyped and critical for executing many different behaviors including foraging, social interactions, and predator avoidance. Differences in the circadian timing of locomotor activity and rest periods can facilitate habitat partitioning and the exploitation of novel niches. As a consequence, closely related species often display highly divergent activity patterns, suggesting that shifts from diurnal to nocturnal behavior, or vice versa, are critical for survival. In Africa's Lake Malawi alone, there are over 500 species of cichlids, which inhabit diverse …

Facemasks and face recognition: Potential impact on synaptic plasticity.

Visual recognition of facial expression modulates our social interactions. Compelling experimental evidence indicates that face conveys plenty of information that are fundamental for humans to interact. These are encoded at neural level in specific cortical and subcortical brain regions through activity- and experience-dependent synaptic plasticity processes. The current pandemic, due to the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection, is causing relevant social and psychological detrimental effects. The institutional recommendations on physical distancing, namely social distancing and wearing of facemasks…

From exposure to embedding: how interconnected social determinants drive health inequalities-a complex adaptive system dynamics approach.

The social determinants of health (SDOH)-including socioeconomic position, education, housing, and social networks-are fundamental drivers of health inequalities worldwide. These inequalities persist because social determinants interact dynamically across time and context, with health emerging from the interplay of social, political, environmental, and biological processes in which determinants act simultaneously as causes and consequences. Early-life exposures and historical conditions produce enduring physiological vulnerability through biological embedding, encompassing stress dysregulation

Neural cell-types and circuits linking thermoregulation and social behavior.

Understanding how social and affective behavioral states are controlled by neural circuits is a fundamental challenge in neurobiology. Despi … inks between behavior and thermoregulation is timely. First, changes in behavioral states-including social interaction-often accompany changes in body temperature. Second, recent work has uncovered neural populations controlling both thermoregulatory and social behavioral pathways. We identify additional neural populations that, in separate studies, control social b …

Peripubertal cannabidiol treatment rescues behavioral and neurochemical abnormalities in the MAM model of schizophrenia.

In agreement with the neurodevelopmental hypothesis of schizophrenia, prenatal exposure of rats to the antimitotic agent methylazoxymethanol acetate (MAM) at gestational day 17 produced long-lasting behavioral alterations such as social withdrawal and cognitive impairment in the social interaction test and in the novel object recognition test, respectively. At the molecular level, an increased cannabinoid receptor type-1 (CB1) mRNA and protein expression, which might be due to reduction in DNA methylation at the gene promoter in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), coincided with deficits in the socia…

Juvenile Shank3b deficient mice present with behavioral phenotype relevant to autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive, multifactorial neurodevelopmental disorder diagnosed according to deficits in three behavioral domains: communication, social interaction, and stereotyped/repetitive behaviors. Mutations in Shank genes account for ∼1% of clinical ASD cases with Shank3 being the most common gene variant. In addition to maintaining synapses and facilitating dendritic maturation, Shank genes encode master scaffolding proteins that build core complexes in the postsynaptic densities of glutamatergic synapses. Male mice with a deletion of the PDZ domain of Shank3 (Shank…

Main predictions of the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicidal behavior: empirical tests in two samples of young adults.

The interpersonal-psychological theory of suicidal behavior (T. E. Joiner, 2005) makes 2 overarching predictions: (a) that perceptions of burdening others and of social alienation combine to instill the desire for death and (b) that individuals will not act on the desire for death unless they have developed the capability to do so. This capability develops through exposure and thus habituation to painful and/or fearsome experiences and is posited by the theory to be necessary for overcoming powerful self-preservation pressures. Two studies tested these predictions. In Study 1, the interaction

Do some cases of anorexia nervosa reflect underlying autistic-like conditions?

In a sample of 51 teenagers with anorexia nervosa (AN)-which included 24 cases constituting the total population of AN cases born in 1970-several had shown social, communicative and behaviour patterns suggestive of autistic-like conditions as children, long before the onset of AN. One of the three boys in the AN group had Asperger syndrome. Three of the 48 girls had histories suggesting high functioning autism and continued to show many features typical of autism. Two further girls had Tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive traits in combination with social interaction problems. Eighteen o…

Facebook as communication support for persons with potential mild acquired cognitive impairment: A content and social network analysis study.

INTRODUCTION: Social media has the potential to increase social participation and support for the well-being of individuals with chronic medical conditions. To date, Facebook is the most popular social medium for different types of communication. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the potential use of Facebook as a means of communication for persons with potential Mild Acquired Cognitive Impairment (MACI), a non-progressive mild cognitive impairment after an acquired brain injury. The aim of this study was to explore how persons with potential MACI, specifically persons with perceived

Towards naturalistic social neuroscience: A multi-level framework integrating real-world phenotyping, neurobiology, and computational mechanisms.

Humans are inherently social species. Our behavior is heavily influenced by the social environment and context. While the traditional social neuroscience approach has made significant progress in mapping isolated social cognitive processes, it often fails to capture the complexity of real-world social environment-where perception, decision-making, and interaction unfold simultaneously and contextually. In this review, we introduce naturalistic social neuroscience as a paradigm shift that bridges this gap through incorporating multidisciplinary naturalistic measurements, which integrates lab-ba

Social phobics do not see eye to eye: a visual scanpath study of emotional expression processing.

Clinical observation suggests that social phobia is characterised by eye avoidance in social interaction, reflecting an exaggerated social sensitivity. These reports are consistent with cognitive models of social phobia that emphasize the role of interpersonal processing biases. Yet, these observations have not been verified empirically, nor has the psychophysiological basis of eye avoidance been examined. This is the first study to use an objective psychophysiological marker of visual attention (the visual scanpath) to examine directly how social phobia subjects process interpersonal (facial …
