The psychosocial impact of leg ulcers in patients with sickle cell disease: I don't want them to know my little secret.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) impacts millions of individuals worldwide and more than 100,000 people in the United States. Leg ulcers are the most common cutaneous manifestation of SCD. The health status of individuals living with chronic leg ulcers is not only influenced by clinical manifestations such as pain duration and intensity, but also by psychosocial factors. Garnering insights into the psychosocial impact can provide a more holistic view of their influence on quality of life. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants living with active SCD-associat

Reflexive insights on networking, solidarity, and community activism spaces for violence prevention in post-COVID-19 South Africa.

The COVID-19 pandemic deepened the existing vulnerabilities marginalized South African communities face daily, and intensified risk factors for injury and violence while disrupting established prevention mechanisms. This paper will examine the transformative potential of networking, solidarity, and community activism spaces post-COVID in advancing violence prevention within the South African context, where communities continue to contend with structural disparities and enduring levels of interpersonal violence. Using a qualitative case study design, this study draws on individual interviews co

[Therapeutic itinerary of children with microcephaly due to the Zika virus].

In 2015, there was an epidemic of microcephaly in Brazil that was associated with infection by the Zika virus. The condition of these children obliged the parents to embark on a quest in search of treatment. The scope of this study was to establish the therapeutic itinerary pursued in healthcare sectors by parents and/or caregivers of children with microcephaly due to the Zika virus. It involved qualitative research, conducted at a Center of Reference on Neurodevelopment between April 2017 and February 2018, with parents and/or caregivers of children with microcephaly caused by the Zika virus.

Biopsychosocial Factors Associated With Pain and Pain-Related Outcomes in Adults and Children With Sickle Cell Disease: A Multivariable Analysis of the GRNDaD Multicenter Registry.

Pain is the primary symptomatic manifestation of sickle cell disease (SCD), an inherited hemoglobinopathy. The characteristics that influence pain experiences and outcomes in SCD are not fully understood. The primary objective of this study was to use multivariable modeling to examine associations of biopsychosocial variables with a disease-specific measure of pain interference known as pain impact. We conducted a secondary analysis of data from the Global Research Network for Data and Discovery national SCD registry. A total of 657 children and adults with SCD were included in the analysis. T

It's Complicated: Sociocultural factors and the Disclosure Decision of Transgender Individuals in Pakistan.

The literature on the disclosure decision of transsexual individuals is sparse, and that which does exist either uses empirical quantitative methods or aggregates transsexuals with other non-heterosexual individuals. The current study focuses this underresearched group and examines the disclosure decision of transsexual people in Pakistan, a developing Muslim country with a unique amalgam of social, cultural, and religious ground realities. Drawing on thematic analysis technique using in-depth interviews with 16 transsexuals, we show how sociocultural factors that are inherently embedded in th

[The significance of sickle cell anemia within the context of the Brazilian government's 'racial policies' (1995-2004)].

This essay reflects on the social significance of growing interest in sickle cell anemia and other illnesses associated with the black body in Brazil. I explore the discursive network that has taken shape around the disease within the social context of its production. I first summarize anthropologist Melbourne Tapper's analysis of the United States program to fight sickle cell anemia in the 1970s, shortly after blacks attained victories in the civil rights movement. Tapper (1999) argues that one of the consequences of this policy was the creation of a responsible black citizenry. In the late 1

Panic disorder in African-Americans: symptomatology and isolated sleep paralysis.

While attention has been paid to the study of panic disorder (PD) with or without agoraphobia among Caucasians, surprisingly little empirical research within the United States has looked at the phenomenology of PD among minority groups. In this paper we present data we have collected and review other research on the phenomenology, social supports, and coping behavior among African-Americans with panic disorder. Our studies indicate that, in comparison to Caucasians, African-Americans with PD reported more intense fears of dying or going crazy, as well as higher levels of numbing and tingling i

Rescue of neuropsychiatric phenotypes in a mouse model of 16p11.2 duplication syndrome by genetic correction of an epilepsy network hub.

Neuropsychiatric disorders (NPDs) are frequently co-morbid with epilepsy, but the biological basis of shared risk remains poorly understood. The 16p11.2 duplication is a copy number variant that confers risk for diverse NPDs including autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, intellectual disability and epilepsy. We used a mouse model of the 16p11.2 duplication (16p11.2dup/+) to uncover molecular and circuit properties associated with this broad phenotypic spectrum, and examined genes within the locus capable of phenotype reversal. Quantitative proteomics revealed alterations to synaptic networ

Neuroanatomical and functional substrates of the hypomanic personality trait and its prediction on aggression.

Hypomanic personality manifests a close link with several psychiatric disorders and its abnormality is a risk indicator for developing bipolar disorders. We systematically investigated the potential neuroanatomical and functional substrates underlying hypomanic personality trait (HPT) and its sub-dimensions (i.e., Social Vitality, Mood Volatility, and Excitement) combined with structural and functional imaging data as well as their corresponding brain networks in a large non-clinical sample across two studies (n = 464). Behaviorally, HPT, specifically Mood Volatility and Excitement, was positi

Characterizing equitable access to grocery stores during disasters using location-based data.

Natural hazards cause disruptions in access to critical facilities, such as grocery stores, impeding residents' ability to prepare for and cope with hardships during the disaster and recovery; however, disrupted access to critical facilities is not equal for all residents of a community. In this study, we examine disparate access to grocery stores in the context of the 2017 Hurricane Harvey in Harris County, Texas. We utilized high-resolution location-based datasets in implementing spatial network analysis and dynamic clustering techniques to uncover the overall disparate access to grocery sto

Being the parent of a child with limb difference who has been provided with an artificial limb: an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

Purpose: Rehabilitative care for children with limb difference often includes the provision and use of an artificial (or prosthetic) limb. Of key influence in this process is how parents experience and respond to their child's limb difference and prosthesis use. However, research on this is lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the experiences of parenting a child with limb difference who had been provided with an artificial limb.Design: Semi-structured interviews took place with seven parents. Interview data was recorded, transcribed and analyzed using interpretative phenomenologica

Transforming public mental health: a review on global trends, challenges, and pathways to change.

This review synthesizes global trends, persistent challenges, and actionable pathways for overhauling public mental health systems, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Thematic analysis of our review revealed that mental health disorders now affect nearly one in eight people worldwide, yet up to 75% of those in LMICs receive no treatment due to stigma, underfunding, workforce shortages, and fragmented systems, perpetuating a widening "treatment and care gap." Social inequities, harmful cultural norms, conflict, climate change, and gender disparities further amp

Navigating Renal Dietary Guidelines in ESKD and Obesity: A Qualitative Phenomenological Analysis of the Role of Social Support.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to renal dietary guidelines, which includes monitoring dietary intake of sodium, potassium, phosphorus and fluids, and consuming sufficient protein and fiber, may prevent hospitalizations and mortality in kidney failure. Forty percent of individuals with ESKD are estimated to have obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) and may be advised to lose weight for kidney transplantation eligibility. Although social support influences chronic disease management, mechanisms linking social support and renal diet adherence in ESKD and obesity remain unclear. METHODS: We conducted an interpretive

Seeking help, doing gender: Gender differences in facilitators of psychotherapy use-A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines how individuals "do gender" in their help-seeking for psychotherapy, focusing on the facilitators that support entry into treatment and the ways these are articulated by women and men. DESIGN: A qualitative study design was adopted, guided by the theoretical framework of doing gender and complemented by a mixed-methods component. METHODS: Narratives from 43 psychotherapy patients who identified as female or male were analysed using qualitative content analysis. This was supplemented by a word count analysis. RESULTS: Women often relied on female social and pr

Possible predictors of outcome for conditionally discharged patients--a preliminary study.

Conditional discharge for restricted hospital order patients is by and large a successful process. The present study aimed to identify variables among a cohort of conditionally discharged patients in the West Midlands that would predict whether an individual was more likely to be readmitted to hospital, involved in a serious incident, to be recalled to hospital or given an absolute discharge. A retrospective case note analysis was undertaken. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify variables that could predict outcome. Patients were six times more likely to be readmitted to hospital

Molecular architecture of the altered cortical complexity in autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication challenges, and repetitive behaviors. Despite extensive research, the molecular mechanisms underlying these neurodevelopmental abnormalities remain elusive. We integrated microscale brain gene expression data with macroscale MRI data from 1829 participants, including individuals with ASD and typically developing controls, from the autism brain imaging data exchange I and II. Using fractal dimension as an index for quantifying cortical complexity, we identified significant regional alterations i

Individual Characteristics and National Income Modify the Association between Cognitive Social Capital and Food Insecurity: Evidence from the Gallup World Poll, 2014-2021.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity affects >2.4 billion people globally and persists across income levels. Characteristics such as low income, low education, and unstable employment do not fully explain this persistence. Social resources embedded in networks, specifically cognitive social capital involving trust, reciprocity, and support, may offset constraints and buffer characteristics associated with a higher probability of food insecurity. OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether social capital was associated with a lower probability of food insecurity and whether this association varied by indiv
