Parents of children and adolescents with severe mental retardation: stress, family resources, normalization, and their application for out-of-home placement.

The study examined out-of-home applications of 88 Israeli parents who had younger children and adolescents with severe mental retardation and, in particular, the question of whether parental application for placement is a function of their marital status, level of education, children's age, and parental stress, family environment (climate), social support, and attitudes toward normalization. Multiple regression analysis showed that five predictors had significant correlations with parental application: parental stress (high), social support (less), attitudes toward normalization (favorable), f

Health education and community empowerment: conceptualizing and measuring perceptions of individual, organizational, and community control.

The prevailing emphasis in health education is on understanding and changing life-style choices and individual health behaviors related to health status. Although such approaches are appropriate for some health problems, they often ignore the association between increased morbidity and mortality and social, structural, and physical factors in the environment, such as inadequate housing, poor sanitation, unemployment, exposure to toxic chemicals, occupational stress, minority status, powerlessness or alienation, and the lack of supportive interpersonal relationships. A conceptual model of the s

Anxiety symptoms as the central node: a network analysis of mental health sequelae in a post-COVID-19 national sample.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has precipitated a global mental health crisis, with the long-term effects of Post-COVID-19 syndrome presenting a complex interplay of physical and psychological symptoms. However, the dynamic network interrelationships between social support, perceived stress, and general mental health and how these networks vary across demographic groups remain inadequately explored, hindering the development of targeted interventions. METHODS: To address this gap, we constructed an interactive network model using national survey data (N = 7,997). A Gaussian Graphical Model

Highly Educated Migrants in Norway: Identity and Well-Being During Delayed Workforce Entry-A Qualitative Study.

Background: Highly educated migrants in Norway often experience prolonged delays before accessing employment that matches their qualifications. During this period, many participate in compulsory education or language training, or work in jobs unrelated to their professions. This study explores how the introductory program for migrants and work outside one's professional field shape health, identity, and the broader integration process. Methods: This exploratory qualitative study used semi-structured interviews with eight highly educated migrants enrolled in the introductory program in Kristian

Social determinants of health and dialysis modality selection in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health are non-medical factors that impact health. For patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) progressing to kidney failure, the influence of social determinants of health on dialysis modality selection (haemodialysis vs. peritoneal dialysis (PD)) is incompletely understood. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 981 consecutive patients with advanced CKD referred to the Ottawa Hospital Multi-Care Kidney Clinic (Canada) who progressed to dialysis from 2010 to 2021. Multivariable logistic regression was used to measure odds ratios (OR) for the association

Living arrangements and mental health in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Non-married persons are known to have poor mental health compared with married persons. Health differences between marital status groups may largely arise from corresponding differences in interpersonal social bonds. However, official marital status mirrors the social reality of persons to a decreasing extent, and living arrangements may be a better measure of social bonds. Little is known about mental health in different living arrangement groups. This study aims to establish the extent and determinants of mental health differences by living arrangement in terms of psychological d

Examining Valued Social Participation of Disabled Older Adults Through the Frameworks of Critical Gerontology and Critical Disability Studies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The importance of social participation for older adults has been well articulated. Missing from this discourse is a critical consideration of how social participation is shaped by political, economic, and social contexts that marginalize aging and disabled bodies. We bridge this gap by applying critical gerontology and critical disability frameworks to our analysis of how access to health and social services and individual and environmental factors are associated with engagement in valued social activities among disabled older adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Us

Psychosocial and socioeconomic factors are most predictive of health status in patients with claudication.

BACKGROUND: As a key treatment goal for patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD), improving health status has also become an important end point for clinical trials and performance-based care. An understanding of patient factors associated with 1-year PAD health status is lacking in patients with PAD. METHODS: The health status of 1073 consecutive patients with symptomatic PAD in the international multicenter PORTRAIT (Patient-Centered Outcomes Related to Treatment Practices in Peripheral Arterial Disease: Investigating Trajectories) registry was measured at baseline and 1 ye

Heart Failure in Black Populations: Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, and Treatment Disparities.

Heart failure (HF) remains a significant health challenge globally, placing a heavy burden on individuals, families, and healthcare systems. The prevalence of HF continues to rise, posing substantial public health concerns. This burden is particularly pronounced among the Black Population, who face higher prevalence, earlier onset, and greater severity of HF compared to other racial and ethnic groups. This review explores the multifaceted landscape of HF in Black individuals by examining epidemiological patterns, pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical presentations, treatment disparities, and

Sexually Transmitted Infection Disparities and Social Determinants of Health in California, 2013‒2021.

Objectives. To characterize the intersection of social determinants of health, measured as the availability of community opportunities for healthy living, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in California. Methods. Geocoded 2013-2021 California bacterial STI cases were aggregated into Healthy Places Index (HPI) quartiles. Communities in the lowest scoring HPI quartile have the fewest opportunities for healthy living, while communities in the highest scoring quartile have the most opportunities. Results. As community opportunities became more available, bacterial STI risk decreased. Asia

The psychometric properties of the Mini Social Phobia Inventory in a treatment seeking sample of children and their caregivers.

The Mini Social Phobia Inventory (Mini-SPIN) is a short 3-item measure of social anxiety disorder (SAD). Using existing data, the current study examined the psychometric properties of the Mini-SPIN using a large, treatment seeking sample of children aged 6-16 years with data available for youth (n = 695, 170) and their caregivers (n = 703, 177) at pre-treatment and follow-up, respectively. The ability of the Mini-SPIN to discriminate between those with and without SAD was examined at pre-treatment and 6-month follow-up, across caregiver and child report. The criterion group validity, internal

Effects of socioeconomic status on physical activity and cardiovascular diseases prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic in the older adults.

PURPOSE: This research seeks to evaluate the repercussions of socioeconomic status (SES) on physical activity (PA) among the older population, both pre and intra-COVID-19 pandemic. The study aims to scrutinize whether alteration in PA behaviors based on SES impacts cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). It is well established that PA has a significant association with CVDs and the pandemic has restricted PA in the older population. We endeavor to discern whether SES modulates PA levels and whether these levels of PA behavior subsequently influence the incidence of CVDs among older adults. METHODS: T

The association between social support and self-rated health in midlife: are men more affected than women?

Social support from family and friends is recognized as an important social determinant of health, given its protective effects on individuals' physical and mental well-being. While most studies have focused on older adults, investigating midlife health is equally crucial since middle-aged individuals are also susceptible to the harmful health outcomes of inadequate social support from friends and family. This study contributes to the debate by examining whether social support is associated with self-rated health among middle-aged Brazilian adults and how this relationship varies between men a
