Altered cortical thickness of the superior frontal gyrus and fusiform gyrus in individuals with subthreshold social anxiety.

Subthreshold social anxiety (SSA) is a condition in which individuals experience social anxiety that does not reach the threshold required for a clinical diagnosis of a social anxiety disorder (SAD). Although SSA may not impair lives as severely as SAD, it can affect social functioning. However, only a few studies focused on structural neural correlates of SSA. We recruited 65 individuals with SSA and used the Leibowitz Social Anxiety Scale to assess their social and performance anxiety levels and other relevant measures of social anxiety. Voxel-wise whole-brain correlational analyses showed a

Being at the Bottom Rung of the Ladder in an Unequal Society: A Qualitative Analysis of Stories of People without a Home.

Background: Homelessness is rising in the United Kingdom, despite investment in measures to eradicate it made by the government and charity organisations. Aim: The aim is to examine the stories of homeless people in order to document their perceptions of their social status, the reasons that led to their homelessness, and propose a conceptual explanation. Method: We conducted 26 semi-structured interviews in three centres for homeless people in Cheshire, North West of England. Results: Three categories-education, employment, and health-emerged from the data and provided a theoretical explanati

Life satisfaction in later life: the role of health, social support, and social exclusion in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Examining the factors affecting life satisfaction among older adults in Türkiye is crucial for both scientific inquiry and social policy development. Population ageing in Türkiye has accelerated in recent years, and the increasing proportion of individuals aged 65 and over has begun to significantly reshape the demographic structure. Life satisfaction is a fundamental public health indicator that predicts disease development, psychosocial health status, mortality risk, and healthcare utilisation. Dynamics unique to Türkiye, such as the transformation of family structures and the gr

Housing environments, social isolation, and mortality among low-income older renters in the United States.

Housing environments constitute a fundamental social determinant of health in later life, yet little is known about how different housing contexts shape survival among economically vulnerable older adults. This study examines whether mortality among low-income older renters follows a graded housing ecology and whether the consequences of social isolation are conditioned by residential context. Using twelve waves (2011-2022) of nationally representative data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study, we analyze 2790 low-income renters (9337 person-wave observations). Mortality risk was es

Cross-cultural validation of the social empathy index: a psychometric study among Japanese medical students.

BACKGROUND: Assessing and fostering social empathy among medical students is crucial for advancing health equity. While education on the social determinants of health (SDH) has become increasingly important in medical curricula, its impact has been evaluated mostly through qualitative approaches. Quantitative assessment tools that assess social empathy remain limited in medical education. The Social Empathy Index (SEI) is a self-report instrument designed to assess interpersonal and social empathy and may have relevance for medical education. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the psycho

When social media becomes a mirror: A serial mediation path from social appearance anxiety to social media fatigue among young adults.

In today's visually driven digital culture, social media platforms constitute a central context for identity development and self-presentation, particularly among young adults. Grounded in Social Comparison Theory and Impression Management Theory, this study proposes a process-oriented model explaining how social appearance anxiety is associated with social media fatigue through sequential psychological mechanisms. Specifically, the study examined the serial mediating roles of appearance-related social media consciousness and social media false self-presentation in the relationship between soc

Social representations of the elderly about HIV/AIDS.

OBJECTIVE: to understand the representational content about HIV/AIDS among seropositive elderly people. METHOD: a qualitative study carried out from April to May 2017, in the city of Recife/PE, with 48 seropositive elderly people, through a semi-structured interview. The Social Representations Theory was used as theoretical framework and the method of lexical analysis through IRAMUTEQ software. RESULTS: it was observed that the social representation of HIV is structured around the proximity of death and that it is a disease of restricted groups, leading to feelings of sadness. On the other h

Prenatal Adversity and Neonatal Brain Connectivity Relate to Emerging Executive Function at Age 2 Years.

OBJECTIVE: Early life adversity alters the structure and function of higher-order brain networks that subserve executive function (EF). The extent that prenatal exposure to adversity and neonatal white matter (WM) microstructure and resting-state functional connectivity (rs-fc) underlie problems in emerging EF remains unclear. METHOD: This prospective study includes 164 infants (45% female, 85% term-born) who were recruited prenatally and underwent neonatal diffusion and rs-fc magnetic resonance imaging scans. Social disadvantage and maternal psychosocial stress were assessed in the prenatal

Differential pathways linking social interaction and Loneliness among university students in the age of artificial intelligence: the mediating role of Social Capital.

Based on Social Capital theory, this study explores the mechanisms linking emerging forms of social interaction and individual Loneliness among university students in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), from the perspective of Social Capital accumulation within AI-mediated social environments. Using survey data collected from university students, a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach was employed to analyze the relationships among key variables. Specifically, social interaction preferences (including behavioral preferences and image presentation preferenc

Co-design of interventions and services with structurally marginalized populations in the context of maternal and early childhood primary care: a rapid scoping review.

AIM: To synthesize evidence on approaches used in the co-design of maternal and early childhood primary care interventions with structurally marginalized populations. BACKGROUND: Involving end-users when developing health interventions can enhance outcomes. There is limited knowledge on how to effectively engage structurally marginalized populations (i.e., groups that are affected by structural inequities resulting in a disproportionate burden of social exclusion and poor health) when co-designing maternal child primary care interventions. METHODS: A rapid scoping review was conducted by sea

Social Adversity and Psychosis: The Mediating Role of Cognitive Vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: Social adversity is a risk factor for psychosis, but the translating mechanisms are not well understood. This study tests whether the relationship between social adversity and psychosis is mediated by cognitive vulnerability in the form of low perceived social rank, negative schemas related to self and other, and loneliness and whether the putative mediations are specific to psychosis or are largely explained by depression. METHODS: The study was a survey in a community sample (N = 2350) from Germany (n = 786), Indonesia (n = 844), and the United States (n = 720). Mediation path a

Social and Religious Networks with Respect to the Health Behaviors of African American Women: A Systematic Review.

The aim of this systematic mixed studies review was to examine how social networks influence physical activity and dietary patterns among African American women. We searched PUBMED, CINAHL, JSTOR, SocioIndex, Medline, Cochrane Library, sportDISCUS, and PsycINFO to review articles published between Jan 1, 2007, and July 1, 2021. Only 23 studies met the inclusion criteria. All studies were conducted in the US. Social support received from family members, friends, and churches was found to positively influence physical activity and/or dietary patterns among African American women. An inconsistent

"It Was Just Really Hard to Be Pregnant in a Smaller Town …": Pregnant and Parenting Teenagers' Perspectives of Social Support in Their Rural Communities.

Teenage pregnancy has a history of being a "social problem" in the United States, with there being higher rates in rural communities. Social support, a contributor to improving mental health outcomes, can significantly impact a teenager's pregnancy and parenting experience. Using House's (1981) social support framework, this study explores the teenagers' perceptions of how their rural community reacted and responded to them as pregnant and parenting teenagers. The results were formulated through the thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews (n = 26) with current and former pregnant and/o

Sam's Story: The Financial and Human Costs of Disjointed Logics of Care.

I am an anthropologist and family doctor who has the good fortune of working in northern California with colleagues who prioritize the social needs of our patients alongside medical ones. In the essay that follows, I share details from my patient Sam's (pseudonym) last 2 years of life to underscore how attending to social precarity cannot be fully achieved within our safety net institutions as they are currently structured. While we have strong evidence that addressing social needs as part of clinical care offers good return on investment, Sam's story makes visible the problems we face when at

The Intersection of the "Opioid Crisis" with Changes in US Immigration Policy: Contextual Barriers to Substance Abuse Research with Latinx Communities.

One of the 12 Grand Challenges facing contemporary social work is to close the health gap experienced by those in historically marginalized communities (Uehara et al., 2013). As social workers, we seek to understand the individual, interpersonal, social, and environmental factors along with the structural inequities leading to initiation and continuation of substance misuse. We are constantly contextualizing the circumstances under which substance misuse occurs, as well as contextualizing our approaches to addressing this issue from both a public health and social justice perspective. In order

Amygdala Nuclei Volumes Are Selectively Associated With Social Network Size in Homeless and Precariously Housed Persons.

Objective: The amygdala is a brain region comprised of a group of functionally distinct nuclei that play a central role in social behavior. In homeless and precariously housed individuals, high rates of multimorbidity, and structural aspects of the environment may dysregulate social functioning. This study examined the neurobiological substrates of social connection in homeless and precariously housed persons by examining associations between amygdala nuclei volumes and social network size. Methods: Sixty participants (mean age 43.6 years; 73.3% male) were enrolled from an ongoing study of hom

Conundrums and paradoxes in the pre-death grief experiences of dementia caregivers: A causal loop analysis.

This study examined how caregiver-environment interactions generate pre-death grief experiences in dementia caregiving. While traditionally conceptualized as an individual psychological response, grief may develop through dynamic feedback processes between caregivers and their social contexts. We used causal loop diagramming to map these dynamics. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 33 dementia caregivers in Singapore to explore their interactions across multiple social domains. Using purposive text analysis, we created a causal loop diagram showing feedback patterns that either dee
