BACKGROUND: Angioleiomyoma is a rare benign neoplasm that originates from smooth muscle cells and contains thick-walled vessels. There were only five cases of uterine angioleiomyoma reported in the available English literatures. We present here the unique computed tomography finding in a patient with multiple uterine angioleiomyomas causing severe menorrhagia.
CASE: A 50-year-old, nulligravid woman consulted us with the complaint of menorrhagia for 3 years and progressively palpable lower abdominal mass for a half year. Laboratory findings were all within normal limits except lower hemoglobin

Recent developments in imaging sciences have enabled dental researchers to visualize structural and biophysical changes effectively. New approaches for intra-oral radiography allow investigators to conduct densitometric assessments of dento-alveolar structures. Longitudinal changes in alveolar bone can be studied by computer-assisted image analysis programs. These techniques have been applied to dimensional analysis of the alveolar crest, detection of gain or loss of alveolar bone density, peri-implant bone healing, and caries detection. Dental applications of computed tomography (CT) include

Diagnosis of intracranial meningiomas with computed tomography (CT) is usually easy. However, some authors have reported cases preoperatively misdiagnosed because of atypical computed tomographic features. We report a case of non-cystic meningioma presenting a ring enhanced mass lesion, with CT scan. A 48-year-old male was admitted to our hospital on January 5, 1987, because of progressive monoparesis of his left lower limb. This had continued for 1 1/2 years. Neurological examination revealed monoparesis, hypesthesia and decreased deep sensation of the left lower limb. X-ray films of the skul

The management of patients with a zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fracture requires assessment of functional and aesthetic impacts, tailored to individual fracture patterns, soft tissue effects, visual changes, and other aspects. Precise reduction is challenging due in part to the three-dimensional tetrapod structure, 4 buttresses, and limited ability to expose ZMC fractures. Tools like virtual surgical planning, navigation, and intraoperative computed tomography may enhance precision and minimize morbidity. We can expect that further developments in navigation, augmented reality, and other

In this case report we describe an occasional finding of intrathoracic caudate lobe protruding through the diaphragm foramen in a 73-year-old woman who came to our attention for a screening for coronary artery disease, due to the presence of cardiovascular risk. The patient had no symptoms. The computed tomography showed, a circumscribed homogeneous soft tissue mass that protruding through the aortic diaphragmatic foramen that was as isodense as the liver. Moreover was revealed an abnormal artery emerging from the celiac tripod which, through the diaphragmatic foramen, ends in an inferior pulm

Tibial pilon fractures represent only a small percentage of all fractures of the lower limb. But they are a feared entity, both for the interpreting radiologist and the treating surgeon and, ultimately, for the patient because they involve the weight-bearing area of the joint and often have associated soft tissue injury. These factors make them technically challenging, with poor clinical and functional results in many patients, even when a perfect joint reduction is achieved. Presurgical evaluation with computed tomography and individualized staged management is critical for the prognosis, a d

Cross-sectional imaging with computed tomography (CT) and MRI are diagnostic examinations useful in the diagnosis of painful ophthalmologic disorders and their potential complications. CT is a first-line imaging study for suspected orbital infections, particularly useful in differentiating preseptal cellulitis and orbital cellulitis and detecting complications such as orbital abscess. When compared with CT, MRI is better for orbital soft tissue evaluation, particularly useful for optic neuritis, ocular diseases such as endophthalmitis, and invasive fungal rhinosinusitis with orbital involvemen

Uterine leiomyomas (fibroids) are the most common tumor of the reproductive system in women between menarche and menopause. Uterine lipoleiomyomas are a rare variant of leiomyoma, consisting of smooth muscle cells admixed with adipocytes. Herein is the case of a 70-year-old female who presented with acute pelvic pain and a palpable pelvic mass. A computed tomography scan of her abdomen and pelvis demonstrated a large, circumscribed, fat and soft tissue density, uterine mass suggestive of a lipoleiomyoma. Histopathology examination of the resected specimen after total abdominal hysterectomy con

An 8-year-old Warmblood gelding presented with a history of progressive ataxia for 6 weeks. Intra- and intervertebral ratios measured from lateral radiographs of the cervical spine were within normal limits. Computed tomographic myelography of the cervical spine revealed focal compression of the dorsal and the ventral contrast column as well as a ventral displacement of the spinal cord within the spinal canal due to a bulging of soft tissue attenuating material in the dorsal half of the intervertebral junction of C6 and C7. Post-mortem histopathological examination confirmed chondroid metaplas

A 5-year-old boy presented with periorbital swelling due to craniofacial emphysema after a dental procedure. Computed tomography also revealed emphysema of the mediastinum. Pneumoparotitis and anesthesia mumps were considered in the differential diagnosis; however, Stensen's duct as well as the parotid itself appeared normal. It was determined that the most probable cause was dissection of soft tissues around the tooth using air-driven dental handpieces or air syringes, causing air to spread from the buccal, sublingual, and submandibular spaces to the mediastinal compartment inferiorly and cer

The authors present the case of a previously healthy, 22-year-old male nonsmoker who sought emergency room treatment complaining of retrosternal pain. He reported a history of odynophagia two days before, followed by produc- tive cough, fever and dyspnea. On chest radiography, a line could be observed surrounding the heart and the continuous diaphragm sign. The chest computed tomography scan confirmed the presence of pneumomediastinum and soft tissue emphysema. The case was discussed in a multidisciplinary team, and the possibility of surgical intervention was rejected. Conservative treatment

A 28-year-old female presented with an incidentally detected mediastinal mass, found on routine chest X-ray. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) was advised to plan course of further management. FDG-PET/CT findings were suggestive of an FDG-avid soft-tissue mass in the left posterior mediastinum in paravertebral location with left pleural effusion. Overall, PET/CT scan findings favored the possibility of a nerve sheath tumor. However, histopathology along with immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of Castleman disease.

Orbital involvement in multiple myeloma is unusual. We describe the case of an 85-year-old woman who presented with right eye proptosis, reduced visual acuity and diplopia. Computed tomography showed a lobulated, enhancing soft tissue mass arising from the right greater wing of the sphenoid with intraconal, lacrimal gland and ocular muscle involvement. Histopathology revealed predominantly atypical plasma cells in a background of reactive lymphocytes, with monoclonality towards kappa light chain protein, suggestive of multiple myeloma. This case illustrates the diagnostic imaging challenge of

The teeth are unique in that they provide a direct pathway for spread of infection into surrounding osseous and soft tissue structures. Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss worldwide, referring to infection of the supporting structures of the tooth, principally the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. Periapical disease refers to an infectious or inflammatory process centered at the root apex of the tooth, usually occurring when deep caries infect the pulp chamber and root canals. We review the pathogenesis, clinical features, and radiographic findi

Extracutaneous malignant glomus tumors are unusual, and their occurrence in the esophagus has been recognized with extreme rarity. We describe a 47-year-old man who presented with progressive dysphagia and weight loss. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, a barium esophagram, and chest computed tomography revealed an unusually large, aggressive soft mass at the middle portion of the esophagus. A curative resection (R0 resection) was achieved by means of Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection. The histopathologic examination and immunohistochemical studies demonstrated a ma

An 8-month-old female Saint Bernard dog was presented with gait abnormalities consistent with a left-lateralizing cervical myelopathy. Imaging revealed a large, irregular soft tissue and mineral mass at the level of C1 and C2. The lesion was successfully excised, and histopathology was performed, revealing evidence of both multiple cartilaginous exostoses and calcinosis circumscripta. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report comparing features using magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, and radiography. Additionally, multiple cartilaginous exostoses have not previously be

Herein we report a 57-year-old man with lower extremity edema and swelling in the scrotum who was found to have a periaortic soft tissue mass and hydronephrosis by computed tomography. With the most plausible diagnosis of retroperitoneal fibrosis, corticosteroid therapy was initiated; however, it did not improve his symptoms. Upper gastroscopy performed on day 20 post admission showed ulcerative regions with an irregular border and fusion of thickened rugae at the gastric angle; the diagnosis of gastric adenocarcinoma was confirmed histologically. It is important to always be aware of unrecogn

A middle-age man presented with acute urinary retention and a history of passage of urine and stones through a fistula at the root of the penis of 7 years' duration. Computed tomography of the soft tissue penis revealed multiple calculi in the urethra. After an initial suprapubic cystostomy, he underwent Johanson's Stage I urethroplasty with excision of the fistulous tract and retrieval of the urethral stones. Intraoperatively, dense stricture of the distal penile urethra was found, with complete obliteration in places. A urethral stricture, if not promptly managed, can lead to devastating com

We present a case of 10 year-old boy with oropharyngeal injury caused by a toothbrush which penetrated the parapharyngeal space. Initial examination revealed broken end of the toothbrush in oral cavity with the head of the toothbrush having bristles, beyond the soft palate. Tongue and palate were lacerated and there were blood and oral secretions in the oral cavity. Patient was having bradycardia. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed the toothbrush head near the carotid artery, the carotid being laterally displaced. The foreign body was surgically removed without any intraoperative or postoper

We report the case of a 64-year-old male presenting with chest pain with a history of hyperlipidemia and smoking. Coronary angiogram was not successful to visualize the right coronary artery. Contrast enhanced 64-slice computed tomography (CT) identified the origin of the RCA from the aorta and distal stenosis of the vessel. Additionally, it revealed that the nature of the stenosis could be consistent with soft plaque or thrombus. Repeated coronary angiogram confirmed the data obtained by 64-slice CT. The confirmatory value of 64-slice CT in the evaluation of coronary abnormalities and stenose
