Return to play after an ankle sprain: guidelines for the podiatric physician.

The ankle sprain is the most common injury in sport and has a high incidence of long-term disability. This disability may be partly due to early return to sport before ligament healing has been completed. The podiatric physician can follow sound guidelines for making a return-to-play decision for athletes suffering from an ankle sprain. The decision-making process requires the podiatric physician to monitor the rehabilitation process and then administer patient self-reported questionnaires as well as functional performance tests to assess the status of ankle function after injury.

Lisfranc injury in the athlete: evidence supporting management from sprain to fracture dislocation.

Although Lisfranc injuries are uncommon, prompt and accurate diagnosis of such injuries in athletes is essential in preventing career-ending injury. Undisplaced injuries have an excellent result with nonoperative treatment. The presence of any displacement warrants open reduction and anatomic fixation; although current evidence mostly supports screw fixation, plate fixation may avoid joint intrusion. It is imperative to warn athletes with significantly displaced injuries that there is a risk of a poor outcome, although some recent evidence suggests that return to elite competitive sports is st

Time-trends and circumstances surrounding ankle injuries in men's professional football: an 11-year follow-up of the UEFA Champions League injury study.

BACKGROUND: Ankle injury is common in football, but the circumstances surrounding them are not well characterised. AIM: To investigate the rates, especially time-trends, and circumstances of ankle injuries in male professional football. METHODS: 27 European clubs with 1743 players were followed prospectively between 2001/2002 and 2011/2012. Time loss injuries and individual-player exposure during training sessions and matches were recorded. Injury rate was defined as the number of injuries/1000 h. RESULTS: A total of 1080 ankle injuries were recorded (13% of all injuries) with lateral ligam

[[Screening of differentially expressed miRNAs related to muscle strain and their target genes].

Muscle strain is one of the most common muscle injuries seen in the office of a practicing physician. To get a better understanding of this injury, we identified the differentially expressed miRNAs in muscle stem cells collected from injured muscle tissues of mouse. In this study, we downloaded the gene expression microarray (GSE26780) from Gene Expression Omnibus database. The dataset contained a total of 12 samples (murine muscle stem cells), including normal controls and samples collected from tissues at different time points after the injury. Differentially expreesed miRNAs were identified

Efficacy of thrust and nonthrust manipulation and exercise with or without the addition of myofascial therapy for the management of acute inversion ankle sprain: a randomized clinical trial.

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of thrust and nonthrust manipulation and exercises with and without the addition of myofascial therapy for the treatment of acute inversion ankle sprain. BACKGROUND: Studies have reported that thrust and nonthrust manipulations of the ankle joint are effective for the management of patients post-ankle sprain. However, it is not known whether the inclusion of soft tissue myofascial therapy could further improve clinical and functional outcomes. METHODS: Fifty patients (37 men and 13 women; mean ± SD age, 33 ± 10 years

Elastic stockings or Tubigrip for ankle sprain: a randomised clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprains are common and generally believed to be benign and self-limiting. However, a significant proportion of patients with ankle sprains have persistent symptoms for months or even years. AIMS: The study aimed to evaluate whether elastic stockings improve recovery following ankle sprain. METHODOLOGY: All patients within 72 h of ankle sprain were identified in Accident & Emergency or the Fracture Clinic. Consenting patients, stratified for sex, were randomised to either: (i) Tubigrip or (ii) class II below knee elastic stockings (ESs, Medi UK Ltd.) which were fitted immedi

Short range stiffness elastic limit depends on joint velocity.

Muscles behave as elastic springs during the initial strain phase, indicated as short range stiffness (SRS). Beyond a certain amount of strain the muscle demonstrates a more viscous behavior. The strain at which the muscle transits from elastic- to viscous-like behavior is called the elastic limit and is believed to be the result of breakage of cross-bridges between the contractile filaments. The aim of this study was to test whether the elastic limit, measured in vivo at the wrist joint, depended on the speed of lengthening. Brief extension rotations were imposed to the wrist joint (n=8) at f

Low range of ankle dorsiflexion predisposes for patellar tendinopathy in junior elite basketball players: a 1-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Patellar tendinopathy (PT) is one of the most common reasons for sport-induced pain of the knee. Low ankle dorsiflexion range might predispose for PT because of load-bearing compensation in the patellar tendon. PURPOSE: The purpose of this 1-year prospective study was to analyze if a low ankle dorsiflexion range increases the risk of developing PT for basketball players. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study (prognosis); Level of evidence, 2. METHODS: Ninety junior elite basketball players were examined for different characteristics and potential risk factors for PT, including ankle dorsif

Rehabilitation of ankle and foot injuries in athletes.

Foot and ankle injuries are extremely common among athletes and other physically active individuals. Rehabilitation programs that emphasize the use of therapeutic exercise to restore joint range of motion, muscle strength, neuromuscular coordination, and gait mechanics have been shown to have clinical success for patients suffering various foot and ankle pathologies. Rehabilitation programs are discussed for ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and turf toe.

Biomechanical response to hamstring muscle strain injury.

Hamstring strains are common injuries, the majority of which occur whilst sprinting. An understanding of the biomechanical circumstances that cause the hamstrings to fail during sprinting is required to improve rehabilitation specificity. The aim of this study was to therefore investigate the biomechanics of an acute hamstring strain. Bilateral kinematic and ground reaction force data were captured from a sprinting athlete prior to and immediately following a right hamstring strain. Ten sprinting trials were collected: nine normal (pre-injury) trials and one injury trial. Joint angles, torques

Surgical versus conservative treatment for acute injuries of the lateral ligament complex of the ankle in adults.

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprains are one of the most commonly treated musculoskeletal injuries. The three main treatment modalities for acute lateral ankle ligament injuries are immobilisation with plaster cast or splint, 'functional treatment' comprising early mobilisation and use of an external support (e.g. ankle brace), and surgical repair or reconstruction. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare surgical versus conservative treatment for acute injuries of the lateral ligament complex of the ankle in adults. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group Specialised Regi

Is it possible to decrease skin temperature with ice packs under casts and bandages? A cross-sectional, randomized trial on normal and swollen ankles.

INTRODUCTION: There is a general belief that the presence of a cast or a bandage eliminates the lowering effects of skin temperature when local cold therapy applied on the surface of the cast or bandage. The purpose of this study is to determine the magnitude of temperature changes at the skin of the ankle after the application of frozen ice packs to the surface of various casts and bandages both in normal and swollen ankles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two healthy subjects (Group A) and 12 patients with Grade III inversion type acute ankle sprain (Group B) were randomly divided into four g
