Many plant pathogens induce water-soaked lesions in infected tissues. In the case of Pseudomonas syringae (Pst), water-soaking effectors stimulate abscisic acid (ABA) production and signaling, resulting in stomatal closure. This reduces transpiration, increases water accumulation, and induces an apoplastic microenvironment favorable for bacterial growth. Examinations of 18 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, 8 with ulcerative necrotic gingivitis, 10 with lichen planus, 10 with herpetic stomatitis, and of 24 patients without evident clinical symptoms of buccal mucosa involvement but complaining of various stomatogenic sensations, e.g. burning, tightness, pain and pricking in the buccal mucosa, perverted taste, etc., showed that chronic diseases of the buccal mucosa involve expressed shifts in the microbiocenosis, namely, dysbacteriosis of different severity.

Root colonization of plants with certain rhizobacteria, such as Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6, induces tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. To assess the frequency and clinical characteristics of methotrexate (MTX) oral toxicity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, 51 RA patients receiving MTX and 46 RA patients not receiving MTX were studied. 2 children with cyclic neutropenia were treated with lithium carbonate. In one patient, fever and stomatitis were ameliorated, but the duration of neutropenia was increased and parotitis occurred. In another patient, aphthous stomatitis disappeared but fever persisted. The duration of neutropenia was prolonged and submaxillaritis and sinusitis occurred. Thus, lithium administration may lead to complications when the duration of neutropenia is prolonged. We recommend discontinuation of the drug, even in the presence of amelioration of symptoms.
