Discrete tactile feature comparison subprocess in human brain during a decision-making process.

From sensory input to motor action, encoded sensory features flow sequentially along cortical networks for decision-making. Despite numerous studies probing the decision-making process, the subprocess that compares encoded sensory features before making a decision has not been fully elucidated in humans. In this study, we investigated sensory feature comparison by presenting two different tasks (a discrimination task, in which participants made decisions by comparing two sequential tactile stimuli; and a detection task, in which participants responded to the second tactile stimulus in two sequ

Temporal dynamics of animacy categorization in the brain of patients with mild cognitive impairment.

Electroencephalography (EEG) has been commonly used to measure brain alterations in Alzheimer's Disease (AD). However, reported changes are limited to those obtained from using univariate measures, including activation level and frequency bands. To look beyond the activation level, we used multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) to extract patterns of information from EEG responses to images in an animacy categorization task. Comparing healthy controls (HC) with patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), we found that the neural speed of animacy information processing is decreased in MCI pati

Elements of exogenous attentional cueing preserved during optokinetic motion of the visual scene.

Navigating through our environment raises challenges for perception by generating salient background visual motion and eliciting prominent eye movements to stabilise the retinal image. It remains unclear if exogenous spatial attentional orienting is possible during background motion and the eye movements it causes and whether this compromises the underlying neural processing. To test this, we combined exogenous orienting, visual scene motion, and electroencephalography (EEG). A total of 26 participants viewed a background of moving black and grey bars (optokinetic stimulation). We tested for e

Internal models of sensorimotor integration regulate cortical dynamics.

Sensorimotor control during overt movements is characterized in terms of three building blocks: a controller, a simulator and a state estimator. We asked whether the same framework could explain the control of internal states in the absence of movements. Recently, it was shown that the brain controls the timing of future movements by adjusting an internal speed command. We trained monkeys in a novel task in which the speed command had to be dynamically controlled based on the timing of a sequence of flashes. Recordings from the frontal cortex provided evidence that the brain updates the intern

Dismantling the "Visual Ease Assumption:" A Review of Visual Narrative Processing in Clinical Populations.

Visual narratives, such as wordless picture books and picture sequences like comics, have a long history in clinical testing, research, and intervention settings. The widespread "Visual Ease Assumption" rests on the premise that visual narratives, given their non-linguistic nature, may alleviate processing difficulties in populations that struggle with language. In this paper, I review the evidence for and against this Visual Ease Assumption in three clinical populations in which language deficits are common or diagnostic: autism spectrum disorder (ASD), specific language impairment (SLI; now

Time Perspectives and Gambling in Adolescent Boys: Differential Effects of Present- and Future-Orientation.

Adolescent boys are characterised by increased risk-taking behavior, including a relatively high propensity to develop problem gambling habits. The association between gambling and sensitivity to immediately available rewards is well-established, suggesting that gamblers are less influenced by potential future consequences than non-gamblers. Nevertheless, existing studies have considered present- and future-orientation as two ends of the same continuum, and have not investigated the possibility that present and future perspectives might make independent contributions to gambling behavior. In t

Trial by trial dependencies in multisensory perception and their correlates in dynamic brain activity.

A well-known effect in multisensory perception is that congruent information received by different senses usually leads to faster and more accurate responses. Less well understood are trial-by-trial interactions, whereby the multisensory composition of stimuli experienced during previous trials shapes performance during a subsequent trial. We here exploit the analogy of multisensory paradigms with classical flanker tasks to investigate the neural correlates underlying trial-by-trial interactions of multisensory congruency. Studying an audio-visual motion task, we demonstrate that congruency be

Changes Over Time in the Comprehension of He and They as Epicene Pronouns.

An epicene pronoun is a gender-neutral singular pronoun used in sentences when the gender of the subject is unknown or unspecified. In English, he and they are commonly-used epicene pronouns. Until recently, he has been widely accepted as being grammatically correct. However, many have argued that he is sexist because it may bias people to think about males. Two experiments were performed using a lexical decision task in which participants reacted to gendered words (e.g., aunt and uncle) after reading sentences using he, they, or unrelated epicene pronouns. We conducted the experiments 15 year

Deficits in temporal processing correlate with clinical progression in Huntington's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Precise temporal performance is crucial for several complex tasks. Time estimation in the second-to-minutes range-known as interval timing-involves the interaction of the basal ganglia and the prefrontal cortex via dopaminergic-glutamatergic pathways. Patients with Huntington's disease (HD) present deficits in cognitive and motor functions that require fine control of temporal processing. The objective of the present work was to assess temporal cognition through a peak-interval time (PI) production task in patients with HD and its potential correlation with the Unified Huntington's

Factorization of Force and Timing in Sensorimotor Performance: Long-Range Correlation Properties of Two Different Task Goals.

Long-range correlations are often manifested in the form of 1/fβ noise in a series of repeated measurements of the same neural or behavioral variable. Recent work has demonstrated that the magnitude and nature of these long-range correlations reliably capture individual differences and variation in task performance. In sensorimotor timing experiments, task characteristics such as tapping or circle drawing affect these long-range correlations during the production of isochronous time intervals. Such correlations are highly reproducible across multiple trials for the same task but do not correla

Center of Pressure Displacement of Standing Posture during Rapid Movements Is Reorganised Due to Experimental Lower Extremity Muscle Pain.

BACKGROUND: Postural control during rapid movements may be impaired due to musculoskeletal pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of experimental knee-related muscle pain on the center of pressure (CoP) displacement in a reaction time task condition. METHODS: Nine healthy males performed two reaction time tasks (dominant side shoulder flexion and bilateral heel lift) before, during, and after experimental pain induced in the dominant side vastus medialis or the tibialis anterior muscles by hypertonic saline injections. The CoP displacement was extracted from the ipsilat

Altered low-γ sampling in auditory cortex accounts for the three main facets of dyslexia.

It has recently been conjectured that dyslexia arises from abnormal auditory sampling. What sampling rate is altered and how it affects reading remains unclear. We hypothesized that by impairing phonemic parsing abnormal low-gamma sampling could yield phonemic representations of unusual format and disrupt phonological processing and verbal memory. Using magnetoencephalography and behavioral tests, we show in dyslexic subjects a reduced left-hemisphere bias for phonemic processing, reflected in less entrainment to ≈30 Hz acoustic modulations in left auditory cortex. This deficit correlates with

Hind limb stepping over obstacles in the horse guided by place-object memory.

An animal that has stepped over an obstacle with its forelimbs uses a memory of the obstacle to guide the hind limbs so that they also clear the obstacle, even in situations in which long pauses are introduced between forelimb and hind limb stepping. To further clarify the features of hind limb obstacle clearance memory, the present study examined hind limb obstacle clearance in the horse. A rider guided horses over obstacles and paused the horse over obstacles in tests that examined the relationship between forelimb and hind limb stepping, with the following results. First, the horses display

Time processing in Huntington's disease: a group-control study.

BACKGROUND: "Timing" processes are mediated via a disturbed neuronal network including the basal ganglia. Brain structures important for "timing" are also discussed to be critical for the deterioration of movements in Huntington's disease (HD). Changes in "timing processes" are found in HD, but no study has varied the degree of motor demands in timing functions in parallel in HD. It may be hypothesized that timing functions may be deteriorated to a different extent in motor and non-motor timing, because in motor timing the underlying brain structures may be more demanding than in non-motor tim

Crossmodal interactions: lessons from synesthesia.

Synesthesia is a condition in which stimulation in one modality also gives rise to a perceptual experience in a second modality. In two recent studies we found that the condition is more common than previously reported; up to 5% of the population may experience at least one type of synesthesia. Although the condition has been traditionally viewed as an anomaly (e.g., breakdown in modularity), it seems that at least some of the mechanisms underlying synesthesia do reflect universal crossmodal mechanisms. We review here a number of examples of crossmodal correspondences found in both synesthetes

Rotation direction change hastens motion sickness onset in an optokinetic drum.

BACKGROUND: Many stationary subjects who view the patterned interior of a rotating cylinder (optokinetic drum) experience motion sickness (MS) symptoms. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of rotation direction change on MS onset and severity. It was predicted that intermittently changing rotation direction would hasten MS onset due to an increased degree of visual/vestibular sensory conflict. METHODS: There were 12 individuals who participated in the experiment (4 men, 8 women, mean age = 24.4 yr). Subjects viewed the interior of an optokinetic drum that rotated at 5 rpm (

On subtypes of developmental dyslexia: evidence from processing time and accuracy scores.

Phonological dyslexics (Ph-DYS) are characterized by a phonological deficit, while surface dyslexics (S-DYS) are characterized by an orthographic deficit. Four issues were addressed in this study. First, we determined the proportion of Ph-DYS and S-DYS in a population of French dyslexics by applying Castles and Coltheart's (1993) regression method to two previously unused diagnostic measures: pseudo-word and irregular-word processing time. Thirty-one dyslexics were matched to 19 average readers of the same age (10 years, CA controls) and to 19 younger children of the same reading level (8 year

Perceptual learning in primary and secondary motion vision.

Specific improvements of perceptual capabilities with practise are thought to give some clues about cortical plasticity and the localisation of cortical processing. In the present study, perceptual learning is used as a paradigm to separate mechanisms underlying the perception of different classes of motion stimuli. Primary motion stimuli (phi-motion), are characterised by displacements of the luminance distribution. However, for secondary motion stimuli the movement is not accompanied by a corresponding luminance shift. Instead, moving objects are defined by their temporal frequency compositi

Scopolamine-induced impairment of delayed recognition of abstract visual shapes.

Since the limbic system, whose involvement in cognitive processes is well documented, constitutes a major central cholinergic area, the effect of cholinergic drugs on cognitive tasks has been studied extensively. In the present study, we used a long-term visual recognition task to evaluate the persistence of the scopolamine-induced anterograde amnesia beyond drug clearance intervals. Following memorization of a list of abstract shapes, subjects were evaluated on recognition performance immediately after encoding, and after a 3-day interval. Administration of scopolamine (0.4-0.8 mg) 70 min pri
