Hundreds of millions of people worldwide are affected by bone-related diseases, such as osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of bone metabolism is crucial for developing novel drugs for treating such diseases. In particular, genetic experiments showing that the receptor activator of NF-kappaB (RANK), its ligand RANKL, and the decoy receptor OPG are essential, central regulators of osteoclast development and osteoclast function were significant turning points in our understanding of bone diseases. RANKL-RANK signaling activates a variety of downstream si

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases have an estimated incidence of 35.5% worldwide, yet access to dental care is often hindered by a shortage of dental professionals and limited diagnostic resources. While Artificial Intelligence (AI) has shown promise in dental diagnostics, most existing models rely on high-quality static images captured in controlled clinical settings. This study aimed to develop and validate Deep Learning (DL) models capable of detecting dental findings and identifying tooth types using video data from a handheld, toothbrush-mounted intraoral device.
METHODS: In this validation stud

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the role of oleanolic acid acetate (OAA), a triterpenoid commonly used in the treatment of liver disorders, inflammatory diseases, and metastasis, in bone formation after tooth loss by periodontitis.
BACKGROUND: Periodontitis causes the sequential degradation of the alveolar bone and associated structures, resulting in tooth loss. Several studies have attempted to regenerate the bone for implantation following tooth loss.
METHODS: Maxillary left second molar was extracted from 8-week-old male mice following induction of periodontitis by ligature for 5 days. The extrac

OBJECTIVE: Trauma during dental surgery is a predisposing factor for bisphosphonates (BP)-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ). However, about 40% of cases of BRONJ are not related to dental invasive procedures, being probably associated to endodontic or periodontal infections. Extraction of non-treatable teeth is considered a reliable choice, to improve symptoms and to reduce the risk of BRONJ. Here we report our experience of tooth extractions in patients under oral or intravenous BP therapy.
STUDY DESIGN: Two-hundred and seventeen patients (38 males, 179 females; mean age 68.72 ± 11.2

Teeth are highly informative in the study of past human populations. In particular, the occurrence of lesions in the masticatory apparatus relates diseases, diet, and living conditions. The dental pathology of three skeletal samples from the north-central part of Latium (central Italy) is reported. Two of them belong to the Roman Imperial Age (1st-3rd century AD): the first (including 942 permanent teeth and 1,085 tooth sockets) represents the rural town of Lucus Feroniae and is mainly composed of slaves and/or war veterans, whereas the second (872 permanent teeth and 1,325 tooth sockets) come

BACKGROUND: Genetic and environmental risk factors contribute to periodontal disease, but the underlying susceptibility pathways are not fully understood. Epigenetic mechanisms are malleable regulators of gene function that can change in response to genetic and environmental stimuli, thereby providing a potential mechanism for mediating risk effects in periodontitis. The aim of this study is to identify epigenetic changes across tissues that are associated with periodontal disease.
METHODS: Self-reported gingival bleeding and history of gum disease, or tooth mobility, were used as indicators

AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate disease progression during supportive periodontal therapy in (i) a group of 225 subjects with "normal" (NG) and (ii) a group with high susceptibility (HSG; n= 109) to periodontal disease (based on their baseline disease status).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The following variables were recorded at the baseline examination (1 year after they received non-surgical periodontal therapy) and at the re-examination after 12 years of maintenance: number of teeth, plaque, probing pocket depth, probing attachment level, bone level in full mouth radiographs. All assess

INTRODUCTION: A core objective of U.S. medical services is to ensure the medical and dental readiness of military personnel. Oral diseases, resulting in pain, infection, or functional impairment, greatly affect the operational effectiveness of military personnel. This study aimed to compare the current causes of dental emergencies and the rates of dental disease nonbattle injuries in a deployed setting with those documented in previous research. Additionally, the study sought to determine if these rates have decreased because of preventive measures or potential improvements in overall oral hea

INTRODUCTION: Tooth extraction due to dental caries is associated with socioeconomic deprivation and is a major reason for elective childhood hospital admissions in England. Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is a risk factor for dental caries. We examined whether the soft drinks industry levy (SDIL), announced in March 2016 and implemented in April 2018, was associated with changes in incidence rates of hospital admissions for carious tooth extraction in children, 22 months post-SDIL implementation.
METHODS: Changes in incidence rates of monthly National Health Service hospital admissi

BACKGROUND: The equine periodontium provides tooth support and lifelong tooth eruption on a remarkable scale. These functions require continuous tissue remodeling. It is assumed that multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) reside in the periodontal ligament (PDL) and play a crucial role in regulating physiological periodontal tissue regeneration. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize equine periodontal MSC. Tissue samples were obtained from four healthy horses. Primary cell populations were harvested and cultured from the gingiva, from three horizontal levels of the PDL (ap

Nasal bleeding is a common disorder in children that is frequently caused by irritation in the Kiesselbach plexus (also known as Little's area). Other common underlying causes include local inflammatory diseases of the nose, infections, vascular malformations, and trauma. We report here a rare case of an ectopic tooth in the nasal cavity as the cause of recurrent epistaxis in a 3.5-year-old child. The clinical presentation, investigations, and management are discussed.

Doxycycline use has historically been limited to children older than 8 years because of concerns regarding permanent tooth discoloration. Six studies assessed tooth discoloration in at least 338 patients exposed to doxycycline before 8 years of age. Six patients had potential discoloration, but studies consistently found no difference in tooth discoloration between exposed patients and controls. Recommendations have changed stating doxycycline, but not other tetracyclines, can be used for short courses (<21 days) regardless of age. Clinicians should be aware of these data because doxycycline u

OBJECTIVE: Conflicting evidence has shown a connection between tooth loss, periodontitis, and increased risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI); thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to clarify this association.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE (up to March 2025) were searched. Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies were included. Fully-adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with the most severe form of periodontitis or tooth loss were pooled with a random effects model using STATA 18/MP software. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were conducted to

BACKGROUND: The complexity of tooth loss not only compromises oral function and appearance but also has a detrimental impact on oral health-related quality of life. Untreated caries and chronic periodontal disease often lead to partial dentition. This prevalence is further exacerbated by the rising incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). These bidirectional effects between diabetes and oral health accelerate tooth loss, necessitating varying levels of prosthodontic intervention to restore oral function and improve patient outcomes. This study aimed to find a correlation between diabetes an

OBJECTIVE: The proposed explanations for the association between tooth loss and cognitive function have largely focused on systemic inflammation, mechanoreceptor feedback, and nutritive deficiencies. However, the role of social wellbeing in this relationship remains unknown. The aim of this scoping review is to explore the pathways linking different aspects of social function, collectively grouped under the umbrella of social wellbeing, to tooth loss and cognitive impairment.

Missing teeth have been linked to incident cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and all-cause mortality. Our previous study revealed that signs of oral infections and inflammatory conditions (i.e., periodontal disease and dental caries) are associated with disadvantageous features of circulating metabolites. This study investigates whether missing teeth and tooth loss, the end points of these diseases, are associated with similar metabolic features. The 2 Finnish population-based studies Health-2000 (n = 6,197) and FINRISK-97 (n = 6,050) were included, as was Parogene (n = 465), a cohort of patie
