Use of the piezosurgery technique for cutting bones in the autotransplantation of unerupted third molars.

Autotransplantation is a well-known method used in oral surgery. However, risk of failure, most commonly resulting from root resorption of the transplanted tooth or ankylosis, is quite high. Piezosurgery with specific device tip vibration frequencies enables selective tissue cutting, and therefore, tooth buds or teeth can easily be removed from bones with little injury to periodontal fibers or bud follicles.

Standing oral extraction of cheek teeth in 100 horses (1998--2003).

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Extraction of cheek teeth (CT) by the conventional repulsion technique requires general anaesthesia and carries a high rate of post operative complications. Consequently, an alternative method of extraction, i.e. orally in standing horses, was evaluated. HYPOTHESIS: The need for and risks of general anaesthesia could be avoided and post extraction sequelae reduced by performing extractions orally in standing horses. METHODS: One hundred mainly younger horses (median age 8, range 2-18 years) with firmly attached CT that required extraction because of apical infec

Immediate replacement of single upper posterior teeth: a report of cases.

BACKGROUND: The immediate replacement of upper molar teeth with implants poses a significant challenge to the clinician because of its sinus involvement. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to report a protocol in which single molar teeth are replaced immediately with implants, minimizing the need for other surgical procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This protocol has been employed in eight cases. Briefly, the teeth are extracted atraumatically, the sockets evaluated, an osteotomy performed following the direction of the socket, and a wide diameter implant placed using the socket walls a

Behavior of CAD/CAM ceramic veneers under stress: A 3D holographic study.

OBJECTIVES: Ceramic veneers restorations may undergo damages, such as cracks, fractures, or debonding. Full-field measurements must be carried out in order to visualize and analyze the strain fields. This paper demonstrates that digital holography permits to investigate the mechanical behavior under stress of a natural incisor and a natural incisor reconstructed with CAD/CAM ceramic veneer. METHODS: The facial surface of a maxillary central incisor is prepared to receive a monolithic ceramic reconstruction manufactured using a chairside computer-aided design and computer aided manufacturing (

Oral and Dental Examination Findings in Beech Martens (Martes foina).

Detailed clinical and radiographical descriptions of oral/dental pathology in the beech marten (Martes foina) are lacking. In the present study, skulls of M. foina from a museum collection (n = 109) were examined macroscopically according to predefined criteria and full-mouth dental radiographs were obtained. Occlusion was diagnosed as 'scissor bite' in 22.5% of evaluated skulls, 77% of evaluated skulls showed 'level bite' of incisors and 9.2% of evaluated skulls had 'open bites'. In three skulls, class III malocclusion was diagnosed. Linguoversion of the mandibular second incisor teeth was no

The development of an oral health charting system for koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus).

The koala is one of Australia's most highly specialized folivores with a diet exclusively of eucalyptus leaves to provide all nutritive needs and therefore requires to be free of oral disease as they are dependent on good dentition for optimal health and quality of life. We developed an oral examination methodology based on protocols for companion animals and human dentistry to chart the oral health of koalas. Thirty free-ranging koalas from South-East Queensland, Australia were examined for general body and oral health. Inspection of the oral cavity was conducted for the presence or absence o

Unique tooth dislocation into submental space during a pan facial trauma - Importance of an orthopantomogram.

BACKGROUND: There are certain reported cases of unusual displacements of teeth involved in a maxillofacial trauma to the maxillary sinus, nasal cavity, gastrointestinal tract or the airway, if worst. All these usually lead to complication the worst being death. So enquiring about them is a very essential part of surveying a maxillofacial trauma patient involving dentition. CASE: This patient was referred to our department for a dental consultation for his ill-defined firm, mildly tender, non-suppurative, submental swelling unresponsive to medication. He had undergone a polytrauma involving hi

Fatigue resistance of 3D printed anatomic post-and-core after mastication simulation.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Rigid post-and-core systems have traditionally been used in the restoration of endodontically treated teeth and are regarded by many as the standard treatment. Flexible materials, including nanoceramic resins, are being increasingly implemented as post-and-core systems, but data supporting their use are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the fatigue resistance of conventional cast metal and nanoceramic 3-dimensionally (3D) printed resin post-and-core systems with teeth without posts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty freshly extracted human m

Effects of 3 different residual root treatments after post-and-core restoration: An in vitro fracture resistance experiment and finite element analysis.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Crown-lengthening procedures (CLPs) and orthodontic eruption procedures (OEPs) improve the biomechanical properties of residual root restoration. However, their use is limited by clinic time, cost, and crown-root ratio. An inner shoulder retention form (ISRF) overcomes these limits; however, whether ISRF meets the biomechanical requirements is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro and finite element analysis (FEA) study was to evaluate the effects of 3 residual root treatments (ISRF, CLP, and OEP) on premolar fracture resistance and stress distribution after pos

Specialty endodontics: diagnostic challenges, Part 2.

Endodontic diagnosis and treatment can range from simple to extremely complex. But no matter how simple a case may seem, a thorough examination by the treating endodontist is imperative before any treatment is done. Taking the time to perform an examination in a consistent and methodical approach can rescue the patient from unnecessary treatment, and the treating dentist from potential liability. The patient may be frustrated from repeating many of the same tests performed by the referring dentist, but this situation can be resolved with clear communication from the general dentist and the end

Optimizing anterior esthetics of a single-tooth implant through socket augmentation and immediate provisionalization: a case report with 7-year follow-up.

Tooth extraction inevitably accompanies alveolar ridge resorption with loss of pre-existing tissue morphology. Replacing missing teeth with dental implants has become popular, but restoring anterior teeth with implant-supported restorations is a technique-sensitive task and poses challenges for dentists. With the progress of implant dentistry, the demand for optimal esthetics has become linked with the desire for faster, easier techniques that shorten treatment time and also satisfy patients. Immediate provisionalization of a single-tooth implant provides significant benefits compared with tra
