Cemental tear on a mandibular second molar: a case report.

A cemental tear is a special kind of root fracture that may cause rapid and localized periodontal destruction. Most cemental tears have been reported on bicuspids and incisors. Here we present a case of cemental tears on both the right mandibular first and second molars. The patient was a 72-year-old man who showed gingival swelling and a deep pocket over his right mandibular second molar as well as a deep periodontal pocket on the distolingual aspect of the first molar. During exploratory flap surgery, a detached root fragment on the mesial side of the second molar and a small root fragment o

Quantification of Porphyromonas gingivalis in chronic periodontitis patients associated with diabetes mellitus using real-time polymerase chain reaction.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal diseases, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss and affect at least one tooth in 80% of adults worldwide, with the main cause being a bacterial plaque. Among subgingival plaque bacterial species, Porphyromonas gingivalis has been implicated as a major etiological agent causing tooth loss. Diabetics and smokers are two patient groups at high risk for periodontal disease. The increase in the number of this organism with the coexistence of other pathogenic microbes leads to rapid destruction of the periodontium, premature loss of teeth and also because of its virulen…

Management of an Unsuccessful Regenerative Endodontic Procedure after Tooth Fracture: A Case Report.

Dental trauma is a very frequent occurrence in children and adolescents, which creates a great impact on the esthetics, functions, and phonetics. Traumatic dental injuries can range from simple enamel fractures to permanent tooth loss. This case report presents an eight-year-old patient with an uncomplicated crown fracture of tooth 21, and 30 days after trauma, it was diagnosed as necrotic pulp. The first treatment choice was a regenerative endodontic procedure (REP), however, the failure led to apexification with Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA). The chosen rehabilitation was a composite vene…

NF-κB Decoy Oligodeoxynucleotide-Loaded Poly Lactic-co-glycolic Acid Nanospheres Facilitate Socket Healing in Orthodontic Tooth Movement.

Orthodontic space closure following tooth extraction is often hindered by alveolar bone deficiency. This study investigates the therapeutic use of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) decoy oligodeoxynucleotides loaded with polylactic-co-glycolic acid nanospheres (PLGA-NfDs) to mitigate alveolar bone loss during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) following the bilateral extraction of maxillary first molars in a controlled experiment involving forty rats of OTM model with ethics approved. The decreased tendency of the OTM distance and inclination angle with increased bone volume and improved trabecular

Does preservation of the socket decrease marginal bone loss in the mandible after extraction of first molars?

The quality of the bone plays an important part in marginal bone loss (MBL) around dental implants. The aim of this study was to compare MBL around implants the sockets of which had been preserved with the bone around healed sites in the mandible after extraction of first molars. It was a prospective, cohort study in which subjects were divided into three groups (n=30 in each): dental implants were placed six months after preservation of the socket in the first group, eight weeks after tooth extraction in the second, and six months after tooth extraction in the third. The changes between the m

An unusual lateral luxation of an upper incisor owing to long-term boxing without protection.

This case report describes a lateral luxation of an upper incisor in a 19-year-old non-professional boxer. The tooth displacement gradually worsened over several months because the boxer received repeated blows to the head without using a mouthguard. Being a chronic dental trauma, rather than an acute lateral luxation, this case had several unique features: the labial plate of the alveolar bone was penetrated, the root apex was free in the vestibulum, the tooth was mobile (second degree) and radiographs revealed bone resorption. This case emphasized the need for a mouthguard to be used even wi

Effect of periodontal disease on bite force and the temporomandibular joint disorders: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar bone loss (ABL), tooth mobility, tooth displacement, and tooth loss due to periodontitis can lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems and reduced masticatory function. While previous studies have examined the associations between periodontal disease, bite force (BF), and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) separately, the combined impact of periodontal breakdown on both masticatory function and TMJ involvement has not been clearly established. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between ABL and BF and to evaluate the incidence and characteristics…

Hybrid two-stage CNN for detection and staging of periodontitis on panoramic radiographs.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition causing chronic damage to the tooth-supporting connective tissues, leading to tooth loss in adults. Diagnosing periodontitis requires clinical and radiographic examinations, with panoramic radiographs crucial in identifying and assessing its severity and staging. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), a deep learning method for visual data analysis, and Dense Convolutional Networks (DenseNet), which utilize direct feed-forward connections between layers, enable high-performance computer vision tasks with reduced computational demands.…

Orthodontic-endodontic treatment planning of traumatized teeth.

Occasionally, an orthodontic patient will accidentally traumatize a maxillary anterior tooth before or during orthodontic treatment. In some situations, the trauma will be substantial and avulse the tooth. In other accidents, the tooth may not avulse, but the pulp becomes nonvital. If the pulp is devitalized, and the root has not fully formed, the apex of the root canal may be wide. In this situation, the endodontist may recommend apexification procedures to help close the apex before conventional obturation of the root canal. If the patient is currently undergoing orthodontic movement of the

Copper deficit as a potential pathogenic factor of reduced bone mineral density and severe tooth wear.

UNLABELLED: The study evaluated if men and women with severe tooth wear were at increased risk of general bone loss. Enamel biopsies obtained from 50 subjects aged 47.5 ± 5 years showed decreased copper content, which was associated with reduced spine bone mineral density, suggesting deficits of this trace element contributing to bone demineralization, enamel attrition, and deteriorated quality of mineralized tissues. INTRODUCTION: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to assess associations between enamel trace minerals and bone mineral density (BMD) in severe tooth wear. We hypoth
