Lung Cancer in the Course of COPD-Emerging Problems Today.

Tobacco smoking remains the main cause of tobacco-dependent diseases like lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), in addition to cardiovascular diseases and other cancers. Whilst the majority of smokers will not develop either COPD or lung cancer, they are closely related diseases, occurring as co-morbidities at a higher rate than if they were independently triggered by smoking. A patient with COPD has a four- to six-fold greater risk of developing lung cancer independent of smoking exposure, when compared to matched smokers with normal lung function. The 10 year risk is abo

Transcriptomic Changes in Internode Explants of Stinging Nettle during Callogenesis.

Callogenesis, the process during which explants derived from differentiated plant tissues are subjected to a trans-differentiation step characterized by the proliferation of a mass of cells, is fundamental to indirect organogenesis and the establishment of cell suspension cultures. Therefore, understanding how callogenesis takes place is helpful to plant tissue culture, as well as to plant biotechnology and bioprocess engineering. The common herbaceous plant stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) is a species producing cellulosic fibres (the bast fibres) and a whole array of phytochemicals for pha

In-Depth Look at the Anatomical Relationship of the Lesser Occipital Nerve, Great Auricular Nerve, and Spinal Accessory Nerve and Their Implication in Safety of Operations in the Posterior Triangle of the Neck.

BACKGROUND: Migraine surgery is an increasingly popular treatment option for migraine patients. The lesser occipital nerve is a common trigger point for headache abnormalities, but there is a paucity of research regarding the lesser occipital nerve and its intimate association with the spinal accessory nerve. METHODS: Six cadaver necks were dissected. The lesser occipital, great auricular, and spinal accessory nerves were identified and systematically measured and recorded. These landmarks included the longitudinal axis (vertical line drawn in the posterior), the horizontal axis (defined as a

Steady-state levels of retinal 24S-hydroxycholesterol are maintained by glial cells intervention after elevation of intraocular pressure in the rat.

PURPOSE: Our previous studies suggested that CYP46A1 and 24S-hydroxycholesterol (24SOH) may be associated with glaucoma. Loss of CYP46A1-expressing retinal ganglion cells is involved in the activation of glia, and therefore possibly in the disbalance of cholesterol. In this context, the purpose of our present work was to emphasize the glial and longitudinal CYP46A1 expression after an interventional glaucoma-related stress triggered by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were submitted to laser photocoagulation of the trabecular meshwork, limbus and episcleral ve

Real-Time Physiological Fatigue Prediction for Human-Robot Collaborative Manufacturing Using Wearable Sensor Fusion and Hybrid Deep Learning: An In Silico Digital Twin Study.

Musculoskeletal fatigue precedes much of the injury burden in manufacturing, yet most monitoring schemes register an injury only once it has occurred, which becomes critical where operators share a workspace with collaborative robots. This paper presents a wearable sensing platform and a learning pipeline that track operator fatigue continuously during human-robot collaborative assembly, evaluated in silico. Eight surface electromyography (sEMG) channels, six inertial measurement units, and four force-sensitive resistors feed a 127-dimensional descriptor computed over 30 s windows. Eight class

Redox-mediated optochemical plasmonic sensing of H2O2-equivalent reducing capacity in exhaled breath condensate.

Oxidative-stress-related diseases generate elevated levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and other redox-active species in exhaled breath condensate (EBC), offering a promising avenue for non-invasive disease assessment. Despite its diagnostic potential, clinical translation of EBC redox species detection has been constrained by bulky analyzers, labor-intensive operation, and limited sensitivity. By harnessing the redox potential, we present a Redox-mediated Optochemical Plasmonic Sensing (ROPS) system, an ultrasensitive platform that enables real-time, easy-to-use, point-of-care quantitative an

Adult ileocecocolic intussusception with mucocele of the appendix: a rare presentation.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Intussusception is a condition in which part of the intestine telescopes into an adjacent segment, causing bowel obstruction. It is common in children but rare in adults, comprising only 5% of all intussusceptions and 1-5% of adult intestinal obstructions. Adult cases often have identifiable causes, making early diagnosis and intervention crucial. Appendiceal mucocele is an exceptionally rare lead point for intussusception. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old male presented with abdominal distension and severe periumbilical pain, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. P

Successful Omalizumab Treatment of Rhinogenic Contact Point Headache Complicated by Severe Cedar Pollinosis: A Case Report.

Headache is one of the most common neurological disorders in children. The most common headache in children is a primary headache, including migraine and tension-type headache, but note that secondary headaches should be differentiated as a cause of headache in pediatric patients. The management of cedar pollinosis in pediatric patients is important because it can cause quality-of-life deficits in addition to nasal and ocular symptoms. Omalizumab, an anti-immunoglobulin E (IgE) monoclonal antibody, is approved in Japan as an add-on treatment option for severe cedar pollinosis, but few studies

Cutaneous Granulomatosis: a Comprehensive Review.

Cutaneous granulomatosis is a heterogeneous group of diseases, characterized by a skin inflammatory reaction triggered by a wide variety of stimuli, including infections, foreign bodies, malignancy, metabolites, and chemicals. From a pathogenic point of view, they are divided into non-infectious and infectious granulomas. Pathophysiological mechanisms are still poorly understood. Non-infectious granulomatous skin diseases include granuloma annulare, necrobiosis lipoidica, rheumatic nodules, foreign body granulomas, cutaneous sarcoidosis, and interstitial granulomatous dermatitis. Necrobiosis l

The influence of spontaneous termination of atrial fibrillation on P wave-triggered signal-averaged electrocardiogram.

BACKGROUND: Prolongation of total filtered P wave duration (Ad) and low root mean square voltages for the last 20 ms of the P wave (LP20) on a P wave-triggered signal-averaged electrocardiogram (PSAECG) are typically observed in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) patients. A shortening of atrial refractoriness and intra-atrial conduction delay (atrial remodeling) have been shown to occur in response to PAF. We, therefore, investigated the effects of spontaneous termination of PAF on the parameters of PSAECG. METHODS: We measured the Ad, LP20 and left atrial (LA) diameter by ultrasonic echoc

[The pro-arrhythmia effects of anti-arrhythmia agents--theoretical and clinical aspects].

Proarrhythmic action of an antiarrhythmic drug is defined as 1) Worsening of preexisting arrhythmia (for example, increase of number of premature beats; frequency, rate, and duration of tachycardias at supraventricular or ventricular level); 2) induction of arrhythmias (supraventricular: for example, atrial tachycardia with block; ventricular: monomorphic or polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, torsade de pointes, ventricular fibrillation); 3) occurrence of bradycardia (sick sinus syndrome; atrioventricular and intraventricular conduction disturbances). The pathophysiology of proarrhythmic act

Acute Rickettsiosis Triggering Plasmodium vivax Relapse in a Returned Traveler: A Case Report and Clinical Review of Travel-Related Coinfections.

Given the overlap of epidemiological and clinical presentations of both rickettsioses and malaria infections, diagnostic testing where malaria is confirmed or excluded, without subsequent rickettsial testing, specifically in the case of Plasmodium vivax or P. ovale infection, may mask the possibility of relapse. A lack of clinical suspicion of co-infections, absence of knowledge on the geographic distribution of diseases, and lack of availability of point-of-care diagnostic testing for other tropical diseases can often lead to missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis of common tropical infections, inc

Highly cytotoxic Cu(II) terpyridine complexes as chemotherapeutic agents.

Cancer is considered as the biggest medicinal challenge worldwide. During a typical treatment, the tumorous tissue is removed in a surgical procedure and the patient further treated by chemotherapy. One of the most frequently applied drugs are platinum complexes. Despite their clinical success, these compounds are associated with severe side effects and low therapeutic efficiency. To overcome these limitations, herein, the synthesis and biological evaluation of Cu(II) terpyridine complexes as chemotherapeutic drug candidates is suggested. The compounds were found to be highly cytotoxic in the

Reccurent guillain barré syndrome after COVID-19.

Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) is known to manifest itself predominantly with respiratory symptoms. However, previous experiences with this disease and many scientific studies have drawn attention to its neurological manifestations. The link between COVID-19 and many neurological diseases, including Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS), has been pointed out. Although GBS is considered a monophasic disease, its relapses occur in 2-6% of cases. We present the case of a female patient with recurrent GBS caused by COVID-19. Given that 2-6% of patients experience a relapse of GBS, and that the COVID-19

Serratus anterior plane block with ultrasound-guided hydrodissection for lateral thoracic pain caused by long thoracic nerve neuropathy - A case report.

BackgroundLong thoracic nerve (LTN) neuropathy occasionally occurs in young people who engage in various sports. It may have a traumatic or non-traumatic etiology. The landmark manifestation of LTN neuropathy is scapular winging; however, it can also occur without scapular winging and specific magnetic resonance imaging findings.CaseAn 18-year-old male complained of right-sided lateral chest pain for 7 months. He was treated with medication, trigger point injection, and physical therapy but showed no improvement. Electromyelogram findings suggested LTN neuropathy in the right lateral chest. We

Infected Urachal Cyst Masquerading as Acute Appendicitis on Point-of-care Ultrasound.

CASE PRESENTATION: A seven-year-old male presented to the pediatric emergency department with one day of abdominal pain. His physical exam was significant for rebound, guarding, and tenderness in the right lower quadrant, and his labs demonstrated a leukocytosis. Both a point-of-care ultrasound and radiology-performed ultrasound were concerning for acute appendicitis with a periappendiceal abscess, but on emergent laparoscopy the patient was found to have an infected urachal cyst. DISCUSSION: Infected urachal remnants are a rare but important cause of pediatric abdominal pain. In this case, i

Anorexia nervosa and autoimmune comorbidities: A bidirectional route?

Immunological dysfunctions in eating disorders have recently gained increasing scientific attention. Furthermore, the reciprocal association between anorexia and autoimmune diseases is of particular interest and suggests a role of autoimmunity in the pathogenesis of eating disorders. Anorexia nervosa (AN) and autoimmune diseases are linked by a bidirectional relationship based on common immunopathological mechanisms. In this review, in addition to reporting the numerous cases described in which autoimmune disorders are associated with anorexia or vice versa, we summarize the many aspects of th

Ending Neonatal Deaths From Hypothermia in Sub-Saharan Africa: Call for Essential Technologies Tailored to the Context.

Neonatal death represents a major burden in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where the main conditions triggering mortality, such as prematurity, labor complications, infections, and respiratory distress syndrome, are frequently worsened by hypothermia, which dramatically scales up the risk of death. In SSA, the lack of awareness on the procedures to prevent hypothermia and the shortage of essential infant devices to treat it are hampering the reduction of neonatal deaths associated to hypothermia. Here, we offer a snapshot on the current available medical solutions to prevent and treat hypothermia i

Pityriasis Rosea Induced by COVID-19 Vaccination.

UNLABELLED: It is increasingly recognized that SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 vaccines have been associated with skin disorders, including pityriasis rosea. It has been reported that pityriasis rosea has been triggered by several vaccines, as a rare side-effect. We present two cases of COVID-19 vaccine-induced pityriasis rosea. Skin lesions appeared in a 49-year-old female 8 days after the first dose of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine and in a 53-year-old male 7 days after the second dose of the same vaccine. The exanthem was self-limited in both patients over a period of a month. LEARNING POINT

Multidisciplinary chronic pain management strategies in patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes.

Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of disorders characterized by abnormal connective tissue affecting several organ systems. Patients with the hypermobile type of EDS (hEDS) commonly experience chronic pain which can present as musculoskeletal pain, fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain or abdominal pain. The effective management of chronic pain in hEDS patients is a challenge. This study reviews two cases of chronic pain in hEDS patients and the multimodal treatment regimen used along with peripheral nerve stimulation for shoulder and knee pains, never before reported in hEDS patients.
