Impact of Experimental Tuberculosis on Fertility of Female BALB/c Mice.

The study revealed no effects of pregnancy and childbirth on the course of tuberculosis in female BALB/c mice after aerosol infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, we demonstrated a negative effect of tuberculosis infection on the fertility of infected females, which manifested in a longer period from mating to pregnancy and in a smaller litter size. Impaired reproductive function in response to the effect of the systemic infectious process was accompanied by the development of immunosuppression confirmed by an immunological test (delayed-type hypersensitivity to tuberculin) and th

[Screening for latent tuberculosis infection in immunosuppressed patients not infected with HIV].

Screening for latent tuberculosis infection (LTI) is recommended in immunosuppressed patients due to an increased risk of progression from LTI to active tuberculosis. Screening involves indirect immunological tests such as the tuberculin skin test (TST) and the interferon-y release assays (IGRAs). IGRAs seem to show superior performance compared to TST in screening for LTI. However, their use and interpretation in immunosuppressed patients is questionable, particularly because of an increased number of false negative or indeterminate results and a low agreement between tests. Presently, there

[Infectious uveitis in infancy: borreliosis, tuberculosis, lues].

Infectious uveitis caused by Borrelia, tuberculosis or syphilis is a rare condition, even in childhood. Because these diseases can be treated successfully, knowledge of their diagnosis and therapy is highly important. The clinical aspects vary from simple conjunctivitis to endophthalmitis or neuro-ophthalmological diseases. The diagnosis of and therapy for borreliosis depend on the stage of the disease. The involvement of different organ systems or positive indirect tests (tuberculin skin test, interferon gamma assays) are important factors in the diagnosis of tuberculosis as the cause of a uv

Reactivation of tuberculosis during immunosuppressive treatment in a patient with a positive QuantiFERON-RD1 test.

A patient with polymyositis developed tuberculosis during immunosuppressive treatment. Tuberculin Skin Test and chest X-ray failed to demonstrate latent tuberculosis, whereas a blood sample that was tested with a modified QuantiFERON-TB-assay, using the recombinant ESAT-6 and CFP-10, was positive indicating that this patient was latently infected before immunosuppressive therapy. This case indicates the risk of progressing from latent to active tuberculosis given that the subject is RD1 responsive, and we believe that preventive anti-tuberculous treatment could have prevented this case of tube

[Neurological manifestations of tuberculosis].

One hundred and forty-four new cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were examined. The examination revealed the following neurological syndromes: vegetovascular dystonia, disseminated cerebral microsymptoms, focal lesion of the brain, sensory polyneuropathy. The presence of positive specific basophilic degranulation reactions and intracutaneous tuberculin test suggests that the body shows allergic reactions in response to Mycobacteria tuberculosis. And since connective tissue that presents in the vessels and tunics in the nervous system is involved into a pathological process in allergy, neurologic…

Coccidioidomycosis in adolescents presenting as chest pain.

Chest pain is a relatively common complaint in adolescents and is most often attributed to anxiety or musculoskeletal conditions. Pleuritic chest pain in association with fever and cough are frequently reported in adults with primary pulmonary coccidioidomycosis. We describe three cases in which chest pain mimicking costochondritis was the predominant initial presenting symptom of pulmonary coccidioidomycosis. In addition, in each case, recent tuberculin skin test reactivity complicated the diagnostic assessment and treatment. We conclude that, in endemic areas, coccidioidomycosis should be co

[Current problems of tuberculosis during the developmental age].

Surely the tuberculosis manifestation now prevailing in pediatric subjects is minimal disease, according to several papers. Also in this field, tuberculin test is very important, mostly when we can observe its positive change, in spite of BCG vaccinated subjects. Then Author examines the so-called "latent" tuberculosis, in which only a lateral projection radiograph or a tomography can show radiological pictures of hilar adenopathy or of minimal parenchymal involvement in lower pulmonary fields. Author considers the dosages of antitubercular drugs in children and at last he invites all sanitary…

Interferon-gamma release assays for the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection: an updated review.

Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) release assays (IGRAs) are in vitro immune tests that have recently been introduced as an alternative to the tuberculin skin test (TST). An increasing body of evidence supports the use of IGRAs for the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in various clinical situations. Currently, two commercial IGRAs are available: the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube test (QFT-GIT, Cellestis Ltd, Carnegie, Australia) and the T-SPOT TB assay (T-SPOT, Oxford Immunotec Ltd., Abingdon, UK). Though the clinical performances of these two IGRAs varied widely according to the charact

[Tuberculosis in rheumatoid arthritis patients: the difficulty in making the diagnosis of latent infection].

Since the beginning of the use of anti-TNF in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory diseases, cases of pulmonary tuberculosis and extrapulmonary tuberculosis have been reported in patients receiving such treatment. In most cases, the disease develops by the time the patient has received the sixth infusion. Every patient should be evaluated for latent tuberculosis infection prior to the use of a TNF inhibitor. However, the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection is a challenge. The tuberculin test, which was the only test available to detect latent tuberculosis infecti…

Active tuberculosis among Iraqi schoolchildren with positive skin tests and their household contacts.

In a prospective cohort study in Iraq, schoolchildren with a positive tuberculin skin test during the nationwide survey in 2000 were followed up in 2002 to determine prevalence of latent tuberculosis (TB) infection and risk factors among household contacts. Of 205 children, 191 remained skin-test positive in 2002. Based on X-ray and clinical examination, 9 children (4.4%) were active TB cases. Among 834 household contacts, there were 144 new TB cases, giving a cumulative incidence of 17.3%. Risk factors for TB among household contacts were: age > or = 15 years; technical/professional job; smok

A scoring strategy for progression risk and rates of treatment completion in subjects with latent tuberculosis.

It is unknown whether patients with LTBI at high vs. low risk of developing active TB are currently adequately identified and treated in the US. In this study our objective was 1) To retrospectively apply the online calculator (tstin3d.com) to determine the probability of having LTBI and assign cumulative risk of progression. 2) Measure treatment outcomes in subjects with Low: 0-<10%, Intermediate: 10-<50% and High: 50-100% cumulative risk. We performed medical record review of tuberculin skin test and/or Interferon-γ release assay (IGRAs) positive patients with LTBI seen from 2010-2015. Of 12

[Predictive factors for recurrence of pulmonary tuberculosis in Tunisia: a retrospective study].

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is still endemic in Tunisia. Even though recurrent TB (RT) is rare, there is an increased risk of resistance. The purpose of this study is to investigate predictors of RT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a case controlled retrospective study, comparing two groups of patients with confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis: a relapse group (GR) of 64 patients with RT and a control group (GT) of 105 patients. RESULTS: Between September 1995 and December 2007, the incidence of RT was 9.48%. All the patients were male. There was no difference in the average age of the two groups.

Comparison of lymphocyte transformation and macrophage migration inhibition tests in the detection of beryllium hypersensitivity.

In seven patients with chronic beryllium disease (Be) the Be lymphocyte transformation test was positive in 100%, independent of steroid therapy, and was reproducible. The Be macrophage migration inhibition test was only positive in four of seven patients (57%) not on steroids, and was not reproducible. In 72 potentially exposed healthy beryllium workers the lymphocyte transformation test was negative in all subjects. The macrophage test was positive in four of 78 and again the results were not reproducible. The workers with positive results showed no differences in age, type or duration of em

Specific immune-based diagnosis of tuberculosis.

Current diagnostic tests for tuberculosis based on tuberculin have poor specificity, and both BCG vaccination and exposure to non-tuberculosis mycobacteria produce a response similar to that induced by infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The identification of regions of the M. tuberculosis genome that are not present in BCG and non-tuberculous mycobacteria provides a unique opportunity to develop new highly specific diagnostic reagents. We describe the current status of attempts to exploit this information and summarise recent research that has used defined antigens for an accurate and
