A case of a 14-year-old boy with a solitary eosinophilic granuloma of the thoracic spine, with paraplegia secondary to the collapse of the vertebra and peridural spread of tumor, is presented. It is the 14th case recorded in literature to this date. This disease is self-limiting, and there is no role of steroids or radiotherapy observed.

In three patients, two women aged 71 and 59 years and a man aged 49 who had been living in the Netherlands for a long time and who were admitted because of vague symptoms, extrapulmonary manifestations of tuberculosis were diagnosed: tuberculosis of the lumbar spine with psoas abscess, tuberculous peritonitis and adrenal tuberculosis with Addison's disease in a patient with open pulmonary tuberculosis. All three recovered with tuberculostatic therapy (isoniazid, streptomycin, pyrazinamide and rifampicin).

Pott's disease is a distinctive presentation of tuberculosis that occurs in approximately 5% of extrapulmonary cases that progressively developed a voluminous paravertebral abscess. While the disease is marked only by the occurrence of inflammatory symptoms and low-grade pain, the advanced mimics other infections and malignancies. Therefore, early recognition is important for proper treatment preventing deformity of the residual spinal and permanent neurological deficit. We present a 20-years-old woman who experienced low back pain for 2 years and presented with a right-side lump in the abdome

OBJECTIVE: Neurosurgeons are frequently asked to evaluate patients for spinal cord biopsies when preoperative magnetic resonance imaging studies demonstrate nonspecific features. These lesions often appear unresectable, but surgeons must decide whether a biopsy is warranted. To determine the best approach to these cases, we evaluated the clinicopathological findings for patients with unknown spinal cord lesions who underwent spinal cord biopsies.
METHODS: Thirty-eight consecutive patients who underwent spinal cord biopsies at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) between August 1988 and July 1998 w

This paper reviews the various radiological signs of tuberculosis including cavities and nodules, alveolar foci, hilar or mediastinal lymphadenopathy and serosal, bronchial and vertebral involvement. It describes the various clinical features and the clinical course of tuberculosis depending on the presence or absence of these signs and their combinations and according to the particular clinical context.

INTRODUCTION: Central nervous system tuberculosis (CNSTB) is a severe condition, sometimes associated with a poor prognosis. Early diagnosis of CNSTB remains challenging, considering that conventional methods lack sensitivity or might lead to certain side effects. Herein, we presented a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the diagnostic efficacy of MRI for CNSTB.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: SinoMed, Wanfang database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Embase, the Cochrane Library and PubMed will be searched to identify studies reporting on the use of MRI in the diagno

Here we report a rare case of diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor (DLGNT) in a 62-year-old male patient misdiagnosed as having tuberculous meningitis. Due to its rarity and radiologic findings of leptomeningeal enhancement in the basal cisterns on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) similar to tuberculous meningitis, DLGNT in this patient was initially diagnosed as communicating hydrocephalus from tuberculous meningitis despite absence of laboratory findings of tuberculosis. The patient's symptoms and signs promptly improved after a ventriculoperitoneal shunting surgery followed by empirica

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Tuberculosis (TB) is a common disease worldwide that is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB of the spine is the most common site of bony infection and is often referred to as Pott disease. To the best of our knowledge, our case represents the youngest patient with naturally acquired Pott disease in the United States.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 13-month-old boy presented with paraplegia and a known diagnosis of TB. His evaluation revealed a kyphotic gibbus deformity in the midthoracic region associated with severe spinal cord compression. The patient underwent urg

The literature includes no studies on the use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in the management of tuberculous spondylitis, and its role in the management of tuberculosis involving the thoracic spine remains unclear. The authors experience with 10 consecutive patients (six women, four men) who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for the treatment of spinal tuberculosis involving levels from T5 to T11, from January 1996 to December 1997, was analyzed. Using the extended manipulating channel method (2.5-3.5 cm portal incisions), video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was perform

Objective: To explore the clinical characteristics of the neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) with the area postrema syndrome as the initial symptom. Methods: A total of 14 cases were enrolled in the study with the diagnose of NMOSD and the area postrema syndrome as the initial symptom. All the clinical data and imaging profiles by the contrasted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head and spinal cord were collected and analyzed. Results: The median age of onset was (38.1±17.0) years old and the gender ratio of female to male was 10∶4. The serum aquaporin-4(AQP4)-IgG was posit

Recent findings suggested a possible role for pinhole collimator scintigraphy to differentiate between metastases, infection and fractures of the vertebrae. The aim of this study was to verify these findings and to ascertain whether we could identify any other specific scintigraphic patterns. The study group consisted of 58 patients. A metastatic pattern was obtained in 18 patients, while 16 showed the compression fracture pattern, 3 the tuberculosis pattern and 1 the pyogenic infection pattern. The study was considered normal in 4 patients and showed a nonspecific pattern in 4. Sensitivity wa

A 62-year-old woman developed headache, vomiting and fever. On admission to hospital, she showed an imparied level of consciousness, diplopia on left lateral gaze, bilateral hearing loss and left hemiparesis. Cranial contrast computed tomography (CT) revealed basal meningeal enhancement. Lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) showed an increase in cell count (80/mm3) and total protein (3000 mg/dl), and a decrease in glucose (65 mg/dl) in comparison with blood sugar (173 mg/dl). Polymerase chain reaction was positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the CSF. She was diagnosed as having tuberculous m
