Multimodally specified energy expenditure and action-based distance judgments.

Previous research has demonstrated that perceived self-motion can be manipulated by the relation between optic flow rate and walking rate. Other studies have revealed that verbal reports of perceived distance are influenced by the energy that would be expended to traverse the distance in question. In an effort to integrate these findings, we investigated how action-based distance judgments are influenced by multimodally specified energy expenditure (MSEE)--the metabolic cost associated with traversing an optically specified distance--using a virtual-reality treadmill environment. The energy ex

On the comparison of VR-responses, as performance measures in prospective memory, with auditory P300 responses in MCI detection.

Patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment are at high risk for developing Alzheimer's disease. Besides episodic memory dysfunction they show deficits in accessing contextual knowledge that further specifies a general spatial navigation task or an executive function (EF) virtual action planning. There has been only one previous work with virtual reality and the use of a virtual action planning supermarket for the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment. The authors of that study examined the feasibility and the validity of the virtual action planning supermarket (VAP-S) for the diagnosis

Mechanisms of neural reorganization in chronic stroke subjects after virtual reality training.

This study investigates patterns of brain reorganization in chronic stroke subjects after two weeks of robot-assisted arm and hand training in virtual reality (VR). Four subjects were studied with event-related fMRI while doing simple paretic hand finger movements before (double baseline) and after training. Bilateral hand movements were recorded and used to provide real-time feedback to subjects during scanning to eliminate performance confounds on fMRI results. The kinematic parameters of each movement were also used in the general linear model with the BOLD signal to investigate training-in

National questionnaire study on clinical ICT systems proofs: physicians suffer from poor usability.

OBJECTIVE: In the health informatics field, usability studies typically focus on evaluating a single information system and involve a rather small group of end-users. However, little is known about the usability of clinical information and communication technology (ICT) environment in which healthcare professionals work daily. This paper aims at contributing to usability research and user-oriented development of healthcare technologies with three objectives: inform researchers and practitioners about the current state of usability of clinical ICT systems, increase the understanding of usabilit

Static and dynamic visual information about the size and passability of an aperture.

The role of static eyeheight-scaled information in perceiving the passability of and guiding locomotion through apertures is well established. However, eyeheight-scaled information is not the only source of visual information about size and passability. In this study we tested the sufficiency of two other sources of information, both of which are available only to moving observers (ie are dynamic) and specify aperture size in intrinsic body-scaled units. The experiment was conducted in an immersive virtual environment that was monocularly viewed through a head-mounted display. Subjects walked

Age-dependent modulation of sensory reweighting for controlling posture in a dynamic virtual environment.

Older adults require more time to reweight sensory information for maintaining balance that could potentially lead to increased incidence of falling in rapidly changing or cognitively demanding environments. In this study, we manipulated the visual surround information during a collision avoidance task in order to investigate how young and elderly adults engage in sensory reweighting under conditions of visual anticipation. Sixteen healthy elderly (age: 71.5 ± 4.9 years; height: 159.3 ± 6.6 cm; mass: 73.3 ± 3.3 kg) and 20 young (age: 22.8 ± 3.3 years; height: 174.4 ± 10.7 cm; mass: 70.1 ± 13.9

Training toddlers seated on mobile robots to drive indoors amidst obstacles.

Mobility is a causal factor in development. Children with mobility impairments may rely upon power mobility for independence and thus require advanced driving skills to function independently. Our previous studies show that while infants can learn to drive directly to a goal using conventional joysticks in several months of training, they are unable in this timeframe to acquire the advanced skill to avoid obstacles while driving. Without adequate driving training, children are unable to explore the environment safely, the consequences of which may in turn increase their risk for developmental

Heart rate variability and motion sickness during forklift simulator driving.

The goal of the study was to determine the effect of a 1-h hour long forklift truck virtual simulator driving on the mechanism of autonomic heart rate (HR) regulation in operators. The participants were divided into 2 subgroups: subjects with no definite inclination to motion sickness (group A) and subjects with a definite inclination to motion sickness (group B). Holter monitoring of electrocardiogram (ECG) signal was carried out in all subjects during the virtual simulator driving. For 12 consecutive epochs of ECG signal, HR variability analysis was conducted in time and frequency domains. I

New prototype neuronavigation system based on preoperative imaging and intraoperative freehand ultrasound: system description and validation.

PURPOSE: The aim of this report is to present IBIS (Interactive Brain Imaging System) NeuroNav, a new prototype neuronavigation system that has been developed in our research laboratory over the past decade that uses tracked intraoperative ultrasound to address surgical navigation issues related to brain shift. The unique feature of the system is its ability, when needed, to improve the initial patient-to-preoperative image alignment based on the intraoperative ultrasound data. Parts of IBIS Neuronav source code are now publicly available on-line. METHODS: Four aspects of the system are chara

Insilico studies on anthrax lethal factor inhibitors: pharmacophore modeling and virtual screening approaches towards designing of novel inhibitors for a killer.

Bacillus anthracis is a causative organism of anthrax. The main reason to use anthrax as a bioweapon is the combination of the spore's durability and the lethal toxaemia of the vegetative stage. In anthrax infection, lethal factor (LF) is playing crucial role in causing cell death, by inhibiting pathways that rely on this kinase family. The combination of vaccine and antibiotics is preferred as an effective treatment for this target. Till date, no small molecule inhibitor is identified as a drug on the target. In this study, we have performed pharmacophore modeling and docking studies to ident

Virtual globes and geospatial health: the potential of new tools in the management and control of vector-borne diseases.

The rapidly growing field of three-dimensional software modeling of the Earth holds promise for applications in the geospatial health sciences. Easy-to-use, intuitive virtual globe technologies such as Google Earth enable scientists around the world to share their data and research results in a visually attractive and readily understandable fashion without the need for highly sophisticated geographical information systems (GIS) or much technical assistance. This paper discusses the utility of the rapid and simultaneous visualization of how the agents of parasitic diseases are distributed, as w

Learning a novel myoelectric-controlled interface task.

Control of myoelectric prostheses and brain-machine interfaces requires learning abstract neuromotor transformations. To investigate the mechanisms underlying this ability, we trained subjects to move a two-dimensional cursor using a myoelectric-controlled interface. With the upper limb immobilized, an electromyogram from multiple hand and arm muscles moved the cursor in directions that were either intuitive or nonintuitive and with high or low variability. We found that subjects could learn even nonintuitive arrangements to a high level of performance. Muscle-tuning functions were cosine shap

Virtual surveillance of communicable diseases: a 20-year experience in France.

Inserm has developed, since 1984, an information system based on a computer network of physicians in France. It allows for constitution of large databases on diseases, with individual description of cases, and to explore some aspects of the mathematical theory of communicable diseases. We developed user-friendly interfaces for remote data entry and GIS tools providing real-time atlas of the epidemiologic situation in any location. The continuous and ongoing surveillance network is constituted of about 1200 sentinel voluntary and unpaid investigators. We studied their motivation, reasons for ei

Evaluation of the Computerized Assessment System for Psychotherapy Evaluation and Research (CASPER) interview with a psychiatric inpatient population.

The Computerized Assessment System for Psychotherapy Evaluation and Research (CASPER; Farrell & McCullough-Vaillant, 1996) includes a computer-based interview designed to assess functioning across a broad range of areas. The psychometric properties of scales derived from this interview were examined in a sample of 191 patients from the admissions wards of a state psychiatric hospital. Few participants had difficulty completing the computerized interview, and most rated their reactions to it positively. Item analyses and confirmatory factor analysis largely replicated the structure reported in

Computer-assisted surgery planning for lower extremity deformity correction by the Ilizarov method.

Starting in 1952, Prof. Gavril Ilizarov, a Russian orthopedic surgeon, devised a complex method of long bone deformity correction using an external bone fixation system consisting of rings and wires. We have developed a computer-assisted surgery planning system to aid in correction using the Ilizarov method. The hardware for the system is composed of an ultrasonic digitizer as input device, an HI plotter as output device, a 386/486 personal computer with super VGA monitor, and a mouse interfacing between user and computer. The software includes two separate programs. The main program is a menu

Randomized crossover study of immersive planning in craniomaxillofacial trauma comparing virtual reality and workstation workflows.

Preoperative planning for cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) trauma requires precise understanding of complex anatomy. Planning in CMF trauma benefits from advanced visualization and segmentation techniques. While conventional workstation-based software is established, it is often time-consuming and less intuitive. Virtual reality (VR) platforms offer stereoscopic visualization and intuitive spatial interaction with volumetric data and have demonstrated potential advantages in efficiency and user acceptance in previous studies. The aim of this study was to compare workflow efficiency and usability of

RosettaSX: Reliable gene expression signature scoring of cancer models and patients.

Gene expression signatures have proven their potential to characterize important cancer phenomena like oncogenic signaling pathway activities, cellular origins of tumors, or immune cell infiltration into tumor tissues. Large collections of expression signatures provide the basis for their application to data sets, but the applicability of each signature in a new experimental context must be reassessed. We apply a methodology that utilizes the previously developed concept of coherent expression of genes in signatures to identify translatable signatures before scoring their activity in single tu
