Can maltreated children inhibit true and false memories for emotional information?

The authors examined 284 maltreated and nonmaltreated children's (6- to 12-year-olds) ability to inhibit true and false memories for neutral and emotional information using the Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm. Children studied either emotional or neutral DRM lists in a control condition or were given directed-remembering or directed-forgetting instructions. The findings indicated that children, regardless of age and maltreatment status, could inhibit the output of true and false emotional information, although they did so less effectively than when they were inhibiting the output of ne

Early difficulties of Chinese preschoolers at familial risk for dyslexia: deficits in oral language, phonological processing skills, and print-related skills.

The present study examined some early performance difficulties of Chinese preschoolers at familial risk for dyslexia. Seventy-six high-risk (40 good and 36 poor readers) and 25 low-risk Chinese children were tested on oral language, reading-related cognitive skills (e.g. phonological processing skills, rapid naming, and morphological awareness), and Chinese word reading and spelling over a 3-year period. The parents were also given a behaviour checklist for identifying child at-risk behaviours. Results showed that the High Risk (Poor Reading) group performed significantly worse than the Low Ri

Computer-assisted remedial reading intervention for school beginners at risk for reading disability.

The aim of the longitudinal study was to investigate whether a computer application designed for remedial reading training can enhance letter knowledge, reading accuracy, fluency, and spelling of at-risk children. The participants, 7-year-old Finnish school beginners (N=166), were assigned to 1 of 3 groups: (a) regular remedial reading intervention (n=25), (b) computer-assessed reading intervention (n=25), and (c) mainstream reading instruction (n=116). Based on the results, computer-assisted remedial reading intervention was highly beneficial, whereas regular type of intervention was less suc

The relationship between sleep problems and neuropsychological functioning in children with first recognized seizures.

Epilepsy is associated with sleep disturbance, but little is known about how early this relationship develops and how it affects neuropsychological functioning. This study documented the frequency and types of sleep problems and examined how sleep problems are associated with seizures and neuropsychological functioning in 332 children following their first recognized seizure (ages 6-14) and in 225 sibling controls. Formal neuropsychological batteries were administered to all subjects. Sleep was measured using the Sleep Behavior Questionnaire and the Child Behavior Checklist. Sleep problems wer

Computer speech-based remediation for reading disabilities: the size of spelling-to-sound unit in a transparent orthography.

This study was designed to assess the effects of four reading-training procedures for children with reading disabilities (RD) in a transparent orthography, with the aim of examining the effects of different spelling-to-sound units in computer speech-based reading. We selected a sample of 83 Spanish children aged between 7 years 1 month and 10 years 6 months (M = 105.2, SD = 7.8) whose pseudoword reading performance was below the 25th percentile and IQ > 90. The participants were randomly assigned to five groups: (a) the whole-word training group (WW) (n = 17), (b) the syllable training group (

Auditory processing skills and phonological representation in dyslexic children.

It is now well-established that there is a causal connection between children's phonological skills and their acquisition of reading and spelling. Here we study low-level auditory processes that may underpin the development of phonological representations in children. Dyslexic and control children were given a battery of phonological tasks, reading and spelling tasks and auditory processing tasks. Potential relations between deficits in dyslexic performance in the auditory processing tasks and phonological awareness were explored. It was found that individual differences in auditory tasks requ

Representing written vowels in university students with dyslexia compared with normal Hebrew readers.

BACKGROUND: Traditional midline microdiscectomy risks paraspinal muscle devascularization/denervation, particularly of the multifidus. We evaluated a standardized lateral-to-spinous Wiltse-interval tubular microdiscectomy (ULTRA, fixed 10-mm tube) designed to minimize muscle injury while maintaining microscopic control. We report 30-day safety and early functional outcomes from an 8-year, single-surgeon series. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained, single-center registry of consecutive single-level lumbar discectomies (L2-L3 to L5-S1) undertaken from Ja

Cognitive impairment in euthymic bipolar patients with and without prior alcohol dependence. A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies of the neurocognitive performance of patients with bipolar disorder have been performed while patients are in the euthymic state. METHODS: Twenty-five euthymic bipolar patients (12 with and 13 without a history of alcohol dependence) were compared with 22 normal control subjects on a neuropsychological test battery assessing a range of cognitive domains. The relationship between subjects' neurocognitive performance and the course-of-illness variables (lifetime episodes and duration of mania, depression, or both), as well as current lithium level, was determined. Response biases in oral reading: an account of the co-occurrence of surface dyslexia and semantic dementia.

This paper reports a case study of a subject (EP) with a progressive impairment of semantic memory and a coincident surface dyslexia. These two disorders frequently occur together, but their association is not readily explained within current models of reading. This study investigated two theories that offer different principled accounts of this association, the "semantic glue hypothesis" (Patterson & Hodges, 1992) and the "summation hypothesis" (Hillis & Caramazza, 1991) and found both hypotheses wanting. Instead it was shown that when vestiges of word meaning remained, a lexical response was

Memory deficit after closed head injury.

This paper reviews research concerning impairment of memory during the early and late stages of recovery from closed-head injury (CHI). Posttraumatic and retrograde amnesia are discussed, including direct measurement, rate of forgetting and evoked potential correlates. Studies of residual memory deficit in survivors of CHI are reviewed, including the effects of severity and chronicity of injury and features such as utilization of semantic features to guide recall. The evidence for relatively preserved motor and pattern analyzing skills after severe CHI is presented and the implications for reh

Impairment in processing meaningless verbal material in several modalities: the relationship between short-term memory and phonological skills.

Phonological processing abilities were studied in a patient who, following focal brain damage, showed selective impairment in non-word reading, writing, and repetition and also a severe short-term memory (STM) deficit specific for auditorily presented verbal material. The patient could execute tasks involving phonemic manipulation and awareness perfectly. Our data, in contrast with earlier observations in a case of developmental phonological dyslexia, show that acquired impairment in non-word reading, writing, repetition, and immediate memory may occur despite good phonological processing abil

Can dyslexia be treated? Treatment-specific and generalized treatment effects in dyslexic children's response to remediation.

A total of 178 reading disabled children were randomly assigned to one of three treatment conditions providing training in word recognition and decoding skills (DS), oral and written language (OWLS), or classroom survival skills (CSS. an alternative treatment control). Pre- and post-treatment comparisons on an array of standardized and experimental measures indicated that the two experimental treatments (DS, OWLS) resulted in improvement on selected tests significantly greater than that resulting from a third treatment intervention which controlled for treatment time and individual attention (

Implicit access to semantic information.

Three experiments investigating the patient M.S.'s semantic memory are reported. Experiments 1 and 2 involved a category-membership decision task, in which M.S. was asked to determine whether a noun was a member of a specified semantic category. His performance in Experiment 1 was impaired for nouns from living categories in comparison with nouns from nonliving categories, and this impairment was especially marked for nouns of low typicality. Experiment 2 demonstrated an equivalent pattern of very poor performance to nouns of low familiarity from living categories. In Experiment 3 the effect o

Lateralized psychological impairment associated with CT lesions in head injured patients.

Twenty-six adult patients with CT scans were given the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) during recovery from an acute head injury. Focal lesions were observed on the initial CT scans of 24 patients. These included 13 in the right hemisphere, 8 in the left hemisphere and 3 in both hemispheres. Diffuse cerebral swelling was observed in the remaining 2 patients. Both the standard WAIS examination (11 subtests) and a shorter version described by McFie (7 subtests) were used to assess psychological impairment associated with CT documented lesions. The McFie method involved a special scoring

Two-year-olds' social learning from others' mistakes in the context of a modified trap-tube task.

Three experiments examined 2-year-olds' (N = 140) social learning of tool use from others' mistakes using a modified trap-tube task. All participants were ethnic Chinese residing in Taiwan. In Experiment 1A, children observed either tool-pushing actions that led to a trapping error followed by successful retrieval (with the error removed or retained), two tool-pushing retrievals, irrelevant manipulation, or no demonstration. Children who did not see the error during the correction relied exclusively on imitation of tool-pushing and, unlike other groups, showed no emulation-based retrieval. Exp

The structure, profile, and diagnostic significance of intelligence in children with ADHD are impressively similar to those of children with a specific learning disorder.

This study examines the structure, profile, and diagnostic significance of intelligence in a group of 948 children diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) assessed with the WISC-IV and compared with children with specific learning disorders (SLDs) and with typically developing children. Based on four indexes, the WISC-IV configuration found in TD resulted applicable to ADHD, but with generally lower loadings on g. The Perceptual Reasoning and Verbal Comprehension indexes not only had higher loadings compared to the other two indexes but also represented the relative stre

Order short-term memory is not impaired in dyslexia and does not affect orthographic learning.

This article reports two studies that investigate short-term memory (STM) deficits in dyslexic children and explores the relationship between STM and reading acquisition. In the first experiment, 36 dyslexic children and 61 control children performed an item STM task and a serial order STM task. The results of this experiment show that dyslexic children do not suffer from a specific serial order STM deficit. In addition, the results demonstrate that phonological processing skills are as closely related to both item STM and serial order STM. However, non-verbal intelligence was more strongly in

Facial memory deficits in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Prenatal exposure to alcohol may lead to a range of neurobehavioral effects, including impaired learning and memory. Although children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) exhibit both verbal and nonverbal memory impairments, their memory for faces has not been as thoroughly investigated and the extent literature provides inconsistent results. The aim of the current study was to determine whether difficulties in face memory exist in children with FASD and whether the difficulties are mediated by task demands. To address this, we used two measures of immediate and delayed facial recogni

We report on a left-handed patient with an ischemic infarction affecting exclusively the total length of the corpus callosum. This lesion clinically correlated with an almost complete callosal disconnection syndrome as described in callosotomy subjects, including unilateral verbal anosmia, hemialexia, unilateral ideomotor apraxia, unilateral agraphia, unilateral tactile anomia, unilateral constructional apraxia, lack of somesthetic transfer and dissociative phenomena. Despite the patient's left-handedness, his pattern of deficits was similar to the disconnection syndrome found in right-handers

This study was designed to evaluate the conceptual model proposed by Luria to identify different types of dyspraxia in learning-disabled (LD) children. The types of apraxia investigated were kinesthetic, optic-spatial, symbolic, and dynamic. In addition, the study explored differential performance on tasks of praxis in learning-disabled children as a function of their Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) IQ patterns. The subjects included 41 LD and 17 normal children ages 108 months to 153 months. They were administered The Praxis Test for Children, a compilation based on
