Computed tomographic geometrical analysis of surgical treatments for equine recurrent laryngeal neuropathy.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the 3-D geometry of the equine larynx replicating laryngeal hemiplegia and 4 surgical interventions by use of CT under steady-state airflow conditions. Secondly, to use fluid mechanic principles of flow through a constriction to establish the relationship between measured airflow geometries with impedance for each surgical procedure. SAMPLE: 10 cadaveric horse larynges. PROCEDURES: While CT scans were performed, inhalation during exercise conditions was replicated for each of the following 5 conditions: laryngeal hemiplegia, left laryngoplasty with ventriculocorde

Preliminary Investigation of In vitro, Bidirectional Vocal Fold Muscle-Mucosa Interactions.

OBJECTIVE: Oversimplified clinical dogma suggests that laryngeal diseases fall into two broad, mutually exclusive diagnostic categories-mucosal injury or neuromuscular/functional disorders. Extensive investigation in the lower airway as well as other organ systems suggest complex interactions between tissue types underlying both tissue health and pathological states. To date, no such relationship has been described in the vocal folds, likely the most bioactive organ in the body. We hypothesize interactions between the vocal fold muscle and mucosa likely contribute to aberrant phonatory physiol

Characterization of the Continuous Elastic Parameters of Porcine Vocal Folds.

This paper presents an evaluation of the elastic properties of porcine vocal folds through uniaxial tensile tests. Inferior vocal fold tissue samples were subjected to tension in the longitudinal direction while digital image correlation techniques were employed to determine strain values throughout the tests. The stress-strain results showed a low-strain linear region, followed by both a nonlinear exponential and then a higher strain linear region. Data from 16 porcine vocal fold samples were analyzed following a similar optimization method as proposed in prior studies [1] to yield continuous

Effects of asymmetric superior laryngeal nerve stimulation on glottic posture, acoustics, vibration.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Evaluate the effects of asymmetric superior laryngeal nerve stimulation on the vibratory phase, laryngeal posture, and acoustics. STUDY DESIGN: Basic science study using an in vivo canine model. METHODS: The superior laryngeal nerves were symmetrically and asymmetrically stimulated over eight activation levels to mimic laryngeal asymmetries representing various levels of superior laryngeal nerve paresis and paralysis conditions. Glottal posture change, vocal fold speed, and vibration of these 64 distinct laryngeal-activation conditions were evaluated by high speed vide

Morphological properties of collagen fibers in porcine lamina propria.

OBJECTIVES: Collagen influences the biomechanical properties of vocal folds. Altered collagen morphology has been implicated in dysphonia associated with aging and scarring. Documenting the morphological properties of native collagen in healthy vocal folds is essential to understand the structural and functional alterations to collagen with aging and disease. Our primary objective was to quantify the morphological properties of collagen in the vocal fold lamina propria. Our secondary exploratory objective was to investigate the effects of pepsin exposure on the morphological properties of coll

Neurophysiology of vocal fold paralysis.

Although a tremendous volume of energy and literature has been devoted to laryngeal paralysis in the past decade, there are still substantial gaps in our understanding of fundamental issues. Oddly enough, controversy remains regarding the actual innervation pathways of the larynx and whether the paralyzed larynx is truly denervated or dysfunctionally reinnervated. An appreciation of these basic issues is prerequisite to making prudent decisions regarding the most appropriate type of intervention. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief overview of basic laryngeal anatomy and neurophy

Spontaneous laryngeal paralysis in four white-coated German shepherd dogs.

Four cases of spontaneous laryngeal paralysis in juvenile white-coated German shepherd dogs are described. The presenting signs were typical for laryngeal paralysis, with stridor present in all four cases. Laryngoscopy revealed bilateral laryngeal paralysis in three cases, and unilateral paralysis in one. Concurrent megaoesophagus was also identified in one dog. All dogs underwent surgical treatment for laryngeal paralysis. Euthanasia was performed in one case due to intractable regurgitation and aspiration pneumonia. A possible association with white coat colour is discussed.

Electronic control of laryngeal spasm. II. Selective blockage of glottic adduction by a closed-loop circuit in the canine.

This work is the continuation of an earlier pilot study in which specially designed electrodes were used to block their own induced action potentials to restrain spasticity. In the current series of experiments, strap muscle and thyroarytenoid contraction (glottic closure) elicited by supramaximal ansa hypoglossi (N = 6) and recurrent laryngeal nerve (N = 4) stimulation (30 to 50 Hz, 0.1 to 6 mA, 0.1 to 1 msec), respectively, allowed afferent information via intramuscular sonomicrometer crystals to trigger a circuit that, in turn, stimulated blocking electrodes passed around the nerves downstr

A comparison of techniques to enhance the evaluation of equine laryngeal function.

This study was designed to define a simple, unequivocal test for the evaluation of laryngeal function and the diagnosis of idiopathic laryngeal hemiplegia (ILH). ILH is a disorder that results from left recurrent laryngeal neuropathy and in which there is no movement of the left arytenoid cartilage and vocal fold. Laryngeal function was evaluated in seven horses using four techniques designed to stimulate laryngeal movements:-nasal occlusion, exercise, swallowing and administration of a respiratory stimulant. In addition, the effects of sedation and twitching on the endoscopic examination were

Neodymium (Nd):YAG laser surgery in the equine larynx: a pilot study.

Laryngeal surgery in the equine is customarily and routinely performed by means of a ventral laryngotomy incision. Such procedures are usually performed under deep general anesthesia with the horse in dorsal recumbency. The objective of this work was to determine the efficacy of an endoscopic approach coupled to a Nd:YAG laser fiber in performing arytenoidectomy. Arytenoidectomy is commonly indicated in the treatment of arytenoid chondritis and in the failure of prosthetic implantation for left laryngeal hemiplegia. This preliminary study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of the endo

Autoradiographic evidence of sex steroid receptors in laryngeal tissues of the baboon (Papio cynocephalus).

A number of studies have implicated the gonadal steroids as significant factors in laryngeal development and disease. In addition, antiandrogens are receiving limited trials in the treatment of laryngeal carcinoma. However, there is little experimental data to document the presence, and more specifically the location of receptors for the sex steroid hormones in the larynx. The purpose of this study is to provide such data. Utilizing an autoradiographic technique, tissues from baboons injected with tritiated estradiol (3H-E2) or dihydrotestosterone testosterone (3H-DHT) were examined and analyz

Vocal and tongue exercise in early to mid-stage Parkinson disease using the Pink1-/- rat.

Vocal and swallowing deficits are common in Parkinson disease (PD). Because these impairments are resistant to dopamine replacement therapies, vocal and lingual exercise are the primary treatment, but not all individuals respond to exercise and neural mechanisms of treatment response are unclear. To explore putative mechanisms, we used the progressive Pink1-/- rat model of early to mid-stage PD and employed vocal and lingual exercises at 6- and 10-months of age in male Pink1-/- and wild type (WT) rats. We hypothesized that vocal and lingual exercise would improve vocal and tongue use dynamics

Lipopolysaccharide-induced sickness behaviour evaluated in different models of anxiety and innate fear in rats.

The fact that there is a complex and bidirectional communication between the immune and nervous systems has been well demonstrated. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of gram-negative bacteria, is widely used to systematically stimulate the immune system and generate profound physiological and behavioural changes, also known as 'sickness behaviour' (e.g. anhedonia, lethargy, loss of appetite, anxiety, sleepiness). Different ethological tools have been used to analyse the behavioural modifications induced by LPS; however, many researchers analysed only individual tests, a single LPS dose or

Social context-induced song variation affects female behavior and gene expression.

Social cues modulate the performance of communicative behaviors in a range of species, including humans, and such changes can make the communication signal more salient. In songbirds, males use song to attract females, and song organization can differ depending on the audience to which a male sings. For example, male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) change their songs in subtle ways when singing to a female (directed song) compared with when they sing in isolation (undirected song), and some of these changes depend on altered neural activity from a specialized forebrain-basal ganglia circui

Distinct classes of low frequency ultrasonic vocalizations in rats during sexual interactions relate to different emotional states.

BACKGROUND: The arterial wall tends to stiffen owing to prolonged exposure to cardiovascular disease risk factors such as high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, and chronic inflammation. Epidemiological research has demonstrated that maternal factors, demographic characteristics, and clinical data influence arterial stiffness and echocardiographic findings. This study aimed to evaluate the association between arterial stiffness and echocardiographic findings with maternal factors and demographic and clinical characteristics in infants of mothers with gestational diabetes or hypertension during th
