Bone mineral distribution of the proximal tibia in gonarthrosis assessed in vivo by photon absorption.

Regional bone mineral density (BMD, g/cm2) of the proximal tibia including the subchondral plate was measured in vivo by dual photon absorptiometry (DPA). Twenty-one women and six men with gonarthrosis (GA) were examined. Twenty-four healthy women served as controls for the women. The precision error of the BMD measurements ranged from 1.4-3.7% depending on the region measured. Subchondral BMD correlated significantly to the radiologic stage (P < 0.05). Compared to the controls, BMD of the subchondral plate, BMD of the medial condyle, the medial to lateral distribution ratio of subchondral BMD

[A study of bone mineral density in postmenopausal and senile osteoporosis with vertebral fractures in female].

Bone mineral density of the lumbar vertebrae (L2-4BMD) in involutional osteoporosis was measured by dual photon absorptiometry to investigate its relationship with the incidence of osteoporotic vertebral fractures of the thoracic and lumbar spine. In addition to monitor L2-4BMD, the author also examined the progress of vertebral fractures during drug treatments by means of radiographs. L2-4BMD at the antero-posterior projection was measured in 287 female subjects with involutional osteoporosis ranging from 45 to 91 years of age. Fracture of the vertebrae was determined from lateral radiographs

Prediction of changes in bone density after operation for primary hyperparathyroidism.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is associated with osteopenia. However, the individual variation in recovery in bone mass after surgery is large. Therefore, modes of prediction of the increase in bone mass after parathyroid surgery were investigated. Preoperatively and at one year after surgery bone mineral content (BMC) in the distal radius was measured with single photon absorptiometry technique in 40 patients with pHPT. Serum levels of calcium, intact parathyroid hormone (PTH), alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin and Vitamin D metabolites were also determined. Preoperatively, Z-score of BM

Reproductive correlates of bone mass in elderly women. Study of Osteoporotic Fractures Research Group.

Results from previous studies of reproductive factors and bone density have been conflicting; some demonstrate a beneficial effect, but others show a detrimental effect on bone density. The present study investigates the association of parity, lactation, and menstruation with radial bone density in 2230 white women, 65 years of age and older. Bone density was assessed by single-photon absorptiometry. Linear multiple regression was utilized to determine if reproductive factors were associated with radial bone density. The number of births, duration of menstrual bleeding, age at menarche, and ye

Suppressed TSH levels secondary to thyroxine replacement therapy are not associated with osteoporosis.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have suggested that patients receiving thyroxine are at increased risk of osteoporosis. We set out to measure bone mineral densities in two groups of post-menopausal women receiving thyroxine replacement therapy (those with serum TSH levels persistently suppressed or non-suppressed) and to compare the results in both groups with those of the local control population. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PATIENTS: Seventy-eight post-menopausal women who had been treated with thyroxine for primary autoimmune or idiopathic hypothyroidism for a minimum of 5 years, 44 with TSH

Differences in cortical bone in overloaded and underloaded femurs from ovariectomized rats: comparison of bone morphometry with torsional testing.

Osteopenia and mechanical incompetence are the defining features of osteoporosis, yet the effects of changes in bone structure on mechanical properties are not completely understood. The primary objective of this study was to determine if in a rodent model, changes in cortical bone structure, as measured by static morphometry, would correlate with functional properties, as measured by torsional testing. For this, cortical bone structure and stiffness were determined in overloaded and underloaded limbs in rats rendered ovarian hormone-deficient by ovariectomy (OVX). Rats were OVX and six weeks

[Transitory bone loss during substitution treatment for hypothyroidism. Results of a two year prospective study].

The authors report the results of a prospective study designed to assess changes in vertebral and femoral bone density during the first two years of replacement therapy in 10 patients with hypothyroidism (4 men, 6 women). During the first year, bone density measured by dual photon absorptiometry fell significantly in the lumbar vertebrae (-5.4%), neck of the femur (-7%) and the trochanteric region (-7.3%). This bone loss was accompanied by an early increase in serum osteocalcin levels, urinary calcium/urinary creatinine ratio and in Sex Hormone Binding Globulin. During the second year, there w

Spectrum and natural history of congenital hyperparathyroidism secondary to maternal hypocalcemia.

Fourteen cases of congenital hyperparathyroidism secondary to maternal hypocalcemia have been reported. We report two additional cases that highlight the wide spectrum of the disease. We extensively studied the parathyroid function of these infants to test the hypothesis that the biochemical hyperparathyroidism found in these infants would be transient in nature, since the presumed etiology (maternal and subsequent fetal hypocalcemia) should disappear soon after birth with establishment of enteral feedings. Infant 1 was born to a mother with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism with poor compliance t

The effect of age and menopause on bone mineral density of the proximal femur.

Although the menopause has been associated with increased bone loss at several skeletal sites, it has not previously been noted in the hip, yet estrogen therapy has been reported to reduce the incidence of hip fractures. We investigated the effect of age and menopause on bone loss in the proximal femur by measuring bone mineral density (BMD) of the femoral neck, Ward's triangle, and trochanter by dual-photon absorptiometry in 263 normal women aged 20-84. Multiple regression analyses revealed a significant decrease in BMD of the femoral neck and Ward's triangle with age in both pre- and postmen

Osteoporotic correlates of alcoholism in young males.

A group of 22 white males (ages, 28 to 40 years) with histories of chronic alcohol abuse ranging from 1 to 21 years were evaluated for trabecular bone mineral density in the left femoral neck area. A group of age and weight-matched white males with no history of alcoholism served as controls. All participants completed medical history questionnaires regarding fracture history, dietary habits, medications, and physical activity. Singh femoral trabecular indices also were measured for the alcoholic participants. Analysis of bone mineral data as measured by dual photon absorptiometry revealed no

[Bone disorder in long-term survival after gastrectomy with reference to bone mineral content].

To investigate post-gastrectomy metabolic bone disorder, the radial bone mineral content (BMC) was measured with 125I-photon absorptiometry in 131 long-term survivors, the postoperative periods ranged 3 to 30 years. Sixty-eight patients (52 per cent) showed abnormally low BMC levels compared with healthy controls. The 43 patients with total gastrectomy manifested a higher incidence of decreased BMC levels than did the other 88 patients with partial gastrectomy. In females, patients subjected to the Billroth II procedure manifested low BMC values. The extent of the decline in BMC was much highe

Osteoporosis of the slender smoker revisited by epidemiologic approach.

A representative sample of 285 70-year-old Danish women were examined by case history, 125I photon absorptiometry of both forearms (BMC), and lateral X-rays of the spine. Fat mass was calculated from height (H), weight (W) and estimated lean body mass (LBM) as W-LBM/H kg m-1. Seventy-five participants with previous or present disease or treatment known to influence the calcium metabolism were excluded. The remaining 210 women included the final study groups of seventy-seven long-term smokers and 103 non-smokers. Within both groups BMC correlated positively to fat mass, r = 0.447 and 0.560, res

Bone mineral measurements among middle-aged and elderly Japanese residents in Hawaii.

Cross-sectional data of bone mineral content measured at five skeletal sites (distal radius and ulna, proximal radius and ulna, and os calcis) with single photon absorptiometry were obtained from a population of Japanese-Americans living in Hawaii, comprising 1368 men (aged 61-81 years) and 1098 women (aged 43-80 years). Age-specific mean values of bone mineral content for all skeletal sites were much greater for men than for women and decreased steadily with advancing age in both sexes. The decrease in bone mineral content with age across a 15-year age range was two to four times (depending o

Responsiveness of muscle mass gain to different load intensities of resistance training in older women: A randomized crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Aging is associated with progressive declines in skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and substantial interindividual variability in adaptations to resistance training (RT). However, whether training load intensity influences hypertrophic responsiveness in older adults remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of two commonly prescribed RT loading schemes (15RM and 10RM) on estimated SMM adaptations and responsiveness in older women. METHODS: Twenty-seven older women (67.7 ± 4.9 years; 65.7 ± 10.6 kg; 154.5 ± 5.8 cm) completed two 8-week RT interventions performed at 15RM and
