[Lower cranial polyneuropathy in zoster sine herpete presenting with pain in the ear and throat: a case report].

A 64-year-old woman developed acute paralysis of glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory, and hypoglossal nerves on the left side after pain in the head and the left ear and throat. Cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed lymphocytic pleocytosis and elevated protein concentration. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-DNA was detected by PCR from cerebrospinal fluid. The diagnosis of lower cranial polyneuropathy due to VZV reactivation was made. After oral administration of an anti-viral agent and steroid, all symptoms and signs dramatically improved. Notably, there was no evidence of cutaneous or mucosal

Primary cutaneous zygomycosis in two immunocompromised children.

Zygomycosis, often referred to as ''mucormycosis'' or ''phycomycosis,'' is a rapidly progressive fungal infection which usually occurs in immunocompromised individuals, and is characterized by soft tissue destruction and invasion of blood vessels. The rare and easily misdiagnosed primary cutaneous form may present as a superficial erosion with a painless, gradual onset and slow progression of symptoms or a gangrenous, necrotic ulceration due to rapid tissue and vascular invasion. With the latter form, the mortality rate among affected individuals is high even after aggressive surgical debridem

Pentoxifylline attenuates UVB-induced cutaneous erythema.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism for ultraviolet-B (UVB)-associated cutaneous erythema may involve production of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha). Pentoxifylline inhibits TNF-alpha production. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of oral pentoxifylline on UVB-induced erythema in humans. METHODS: Baseline minimum erythema doses (MEDs) for UVB were measured. Subjects received pentoxifylline 400 mg orally every 8 h for 4 doses. MED assays were repeated 2 h after the last dose of pentoxifylline. Pre- and posttreatment MED results were assessed by the paired t test. RESULTS: Oral administration of pe

Causal association between environmental variables and the excess cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Colombia: are we looking to the wrong side?

Our main aim was to estimate and compare the effects of six environmental variables (air temperature, soil temperature, rainfall, runoff, soil moisture, and the enhanced vegetation index) on excess cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Colombia. We used epidemiological data from the Colombian Public Health Surveillance System (January 2007 to December 2019). Environmental data were obtained from remote sensing sources including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. Data on popu

Histopathological features associated with application of black salve to cutaneous lesions: a series of 16 cases and review of the literature.

AIMS: To document the histopathological features of self-treatment of cutaneous lesions with the escharotic agent black salve. METHODS: Retrospective review of cutaneous lesions treated with black salve retrieved from the files of four pathology practices in Western Australia and review of the published literature. RESULTS: 16 lesions from 11 patients who self administered black salve for the treatment of skin lesions were reviewed. Clinical diagnoses at the time of biopsy included scar, keloid scar, pseudomelanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and cutaneous necrosis. Histop

Toxoplasma gondii and Alternaria sp.: An Original Association in an Immunosuppressed Dog with Persistent Skin Lesions.

Dogs and cats may suffer from a variety of diseases, mainly immune mediated, that require the administration of immunosuppressive drugs. Such therapies can cause adverse effects either by the toxicity of the drugs or as a consequence of immune suppression and associated opportunistic infections. Here we present an, yet unknown, association of Toxoplasma gondii and Alternaria fungus, within cutaneous lesions in a dog under long-term immunosuppressive therapy. The diagnosis of such infections is laborious and not obvious at first glance, since the clinical signs of cutaneous toxoplasmosis, neosp

Cutaneous metastasis: a clinical, pathological, and immunohistochemical appraisal.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous tumor metastasis may be the first manifestation of cancer, but more often is a harbinger of advanced disease that portends an ominous prognosis. All skin accessions over the past 10 years from a large Veterans Administration (VA) hospital were reviewed. METHODS: Archived histories, glass slides, and the immunohistochemical battery (IHC), were assessed to determine diagnostic accuracy. RESULTS: Of the 100,453 cases reviewed, there were a total of 77 cases (75 males and 2 females) of cutaneous metastasis from the lungs (28.6%), metastatic melanoma (18.2%), gastrointestina

Cutaneous reactions to vaccinations.

Vaccinations are important for infectious disease prevention; however, there are adverse effects of vaccines, many of which are cutaneous. Some of these reactions are due to nonspecific inflammation and irritation at the injection site, whereas other reactions are directly related to the live attenuated virus. Rarely, vaccinations have been associated with generalized hypersensitivity reactions, such as erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, urticaria, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, and drug hypersensitivity syndrome. The onset of certain inflammatory dermatologic conditio

Cutaneous or respiratory exposures to peanut allergens in mice and their impacts on subsequent oral exposure.

BACKGROUND: Recent data suggested that non-gastrointestinal exposure can lead to sensitisation to food allergens. We thus assessed the immune impact of respiratory or cutaneous exposure to peanut proteins on non-altered epithelium and investigated the effect of such pre-exposure on subsequent oral administration of peanut. METHODS: BALB/cJ mice were exposed to purified Ara h 1 or to a non-defatted roasted peanut extract (PE) by simple deposit of allergens solutions on non-altered skin or in the nostrils. Exposures were performed 6 times at weekly intervals. Pre-exposed mice then received intr

Detection of Leishmania parasites in the blood of patients with isolated cutaneous leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: The consequences of the spread of Leishmania parasites to the blood from lesions in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis are numerous. To assess the magnitude of this invasion we conducted the present study on patients referred to the American University of Beirut Medical Center for cutaneous leishmaniasis. METHODS: Patients referred for the management of cutaneous leishmaniasis were included in the study. Skin and blood cultures for Leishmania were taken from these patients. RESULTS: One hundred sixty-two patients were proven to have cutaneous leishmaniasis by pathology; 52% we

Autonomic regulation of cutaneous vascular resistance in the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana.

To gain a better understanding of the regulation of cutaneous blood flow in the bullfrog, the vascular innervation, vasoactivity and adrenoceptor types of the cutaneous vasculature were investigated using a pump-perfused skin preparation. Stimulation of cranial nerve I, the vagal ganglion, sympathetic ganglion 1 and sometimes sympathetic ganglion 2 caused cutaneous vascular resistance (CVR) to increase. Stimulation of cranial nerve IX and spinal nerves 1 and 2 had no effect on CVR. The response to stimulation of sympathetic ganglion 1 was antagonized by phentolamine but not by atropine. Phento

Immunisation regimes used to elevate serum IgE in sheep.

Six different immunisation regimes were used in an attempt to elevate the concentration of ovine IgE. The response was measured by a passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) test. These regimes included infection with Ascaris suum and the combination of infection and parenteral administration of Ascaris antigens and ovalbumin in adjuvants. The regime producing the highest titre of IgE was the combination of Ascaris infection with parenteral administration of Ascaris extract in Bordetella pertussis. This regime consistently produced a transient high titre (1:1280-1:2560) of serum IgE 9-12 days after

Histone deacetylase inhibitors: novel agents in cancer treatment.

Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDAC-Is) are agents that have demonstrated anticancer activity in vivo and in vitro, leading to clinical trials evaluating their efficacy in multiple cancer types. Only two HDAC-Is are currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, vorinostat and romidepsin, both with indications for cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Romidepsin has an additional approval in peripheral T-cell lymphoma. Promising clinical trial results in other cancer types will likely lead to expanded use of these and other HDAC-Is. To provide care for patients receiving these agents, onco

Methotrexate and ultraviolet radiation.

Reactivation of a sunburn has been reported after the administration of methotrexate for cancer chemotherapy. A similar reaction is described in a patient with psoriasis who was receiving both coal tar with ultraviolet radiation for cutaneous lesions and methotrexate for arthritis. Knowledge of this poorly understood side effect of methotrexate is particularly important for physicians administering phototherapy and, perhaps, photochemotherapy.

MiR-221-3p facilitates cutaneous wound healing in diabetic mice.

The persistent non-healing of cutaneous wounds in diabetic patients represents a critical clinical challenge requiring urgent resolution. Excessive inflammation, impaired angiogenesis, and aberrant collagen remodeling profoundly hinder wound recovery. This study explores the potential therapeutic value of miR-221-3p in diabetic cutaneous wound healing using murine models. Subcutaneous administration of miR-221-3p was associated with accelerated wound closure; histological staining and Western blot analyses showed decreased expression of inflammatory markers (IL-1β, IL-6, MPO, CD68), increased

Pityriasis lichenoides chronica associated with herpes simplex virus type 2.

Introduction. Pityriasis lichenoides is a rare, acquired spectrum of skin conditions of an unknown etiology. Case Report. A 28-year-old man presented with recurrent outbreaks of herpes simplex virus associated with the onset of red-to-brown maculopapules located predominantly in trunk in each recurrence. Positive serologies to herpes simplex virus type 2 were detected. Histopathological examination of one of the lesions was consistent with a diagnosis of pityriasis lichenoides chronica. Discussion. Pityriasis lichenoides is a rare cutaneous entity of an unknown cause which includes different c

[Bleomycin-induced PSS-like pseudoscleroderma. Case report and review of the literature].

Although the association between administration of the antitumor agent bleomycin and the development of cutaneous fibrosis is established, there are only a small number of cases of bleomycin-induced scleroderma described in the literature. We report the development of generalised scleroderma with wide spread hyperpigmentation in a 52-year-old male patient, who received a total dose of 360 mg bleomycin in combination with cisplatin and etoposid for therapy of a malignant testicular seminoma. The clinical cutaneous alterations as well as the histological findings were indistinguishable from thos

Conceptual Contextualization of Neutrophilic Dermatoses.

Neutrophilic dermatoses are defined as inflammatory skin diseases characterized by sterile infiltration of polymorphonuclear neutrophils into various cutaneous layers. Although, in many cases, neutrophilic dermatoses represent the cutaneous counterpart of autoinflammatory diseases, this is not always the case, and there are other causes associated with this group of diseases, such as the administration of certain drugs or an underlying tumor. However, understanding the autoinflammatory context in which most of these entities develop, as well as their close relationship with autoimmunity, is ke
