OBJECTIVE: To identify parent-reported risk factors for adolescent panic attacks.
METHOD: Structured diagnostic interviews were obtained from 770 parents of participants in a school-based risk factor study for adolescent panic. Parent-reported risk factors assessed included characteristics of the child (negative affect, separation anxiety disorder [SAD], childhood chronic illness, and childhood loss) as well as characteristics of the parent (parental panic disorder or agoraphobia [PDA], parental major depression, and parental chronic illness).
RESULTS: Bivariate predictors of adolescent pani

During the past decade, the relative increase in adolescent pregnancy has forced physicians and other health professionals who provide services to teenagers to be aware of the factual data relating to teenage pregnancy and the pertinent social issues in order to serve as advocates for both the parent and the child. In this article, we review the existing demographic data regarding adolescent pregnancy in conjunction with current approaches to intervention programs for the maintenance of a stable environment and optimal development of the parent and the child.

Cannabis is the most common illicit substance used by adolescents and the third most common psychoactive substance after alcohol and nicotine. Cannabis use during adolescence interrupts a critical period of brain development and leads to inappropriate activation of the reward pathway. Because the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for impulse control and other executive functions, is not fully mature until the mid-twenties, the adolescent brain is especially vulnerable to damage from substance use. Although cannabis remains illegal at the federal level, recent changes in state policies ha

This research aims to uncover aspects of adolescent masculine development among adult substance abusers. In-depth interviews and the resulting narrative provide the data for this exploratory analysis. Three main areas of adolescent masculinities are discussed: substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, and recreation. The findings are interpreted in light of Connell's conceptualization of hegemonic masculinities. Based on this sample, masculinities are constructed via a menu of adolescent behaviors that are descriptive of a working class lifestyle. It is the cultural context that sets the stage fo

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined whether physical abuse functions as an additional risk factor for adolescent psychopathology after other important known risk factors are controlled for.
METHOD: The authors recruited 99 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years directly from the New York State Department of Social Services after official documentation of physical abuse. The abused adolescents were compared to 99 nonabused adolescents matched for age, gender, race, and community income. Diagnostic interviews and measures of selected risk factors for psychopathology were administered to the adolesce

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: As many as half of all psychotic disorders diagnosed by age 28 in the population emerge in individuals who attended child and adolescent psychiatry services, highlighting important opportunities for psychosis prediction and prevention. An important next step is to identify prognostic factors for later psychotic disorders within this clinical population. We assessed a large number of potential prognostic factors for adult-onset psychosis within adolescent psychiatry services.
STUDY DESIGN: Linked population-wide register data for all individuals born in Finland 1987-

Risky sexual behaviors among adolescents can increase adverse outcomes including unplanned pregnancy or contraction or transmission of disease. Adolescents who engage in risky sexual activities are at increased risk for adverse health and social outcomes compared to those who do not engage. Despite declines in adolescent pregnancy and birth rates, the diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is steadily increasing among adolescents. Moreover, African American adolescent boys in the United States, specifically in the southeastern region are disproportionally at greater risk for STIs,

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits (i.e., callousness, low empathy, shallow affect) have been conceptualized as a downward extension of the interpersonal and affective components of adult psychopathy and are associated with stable and severe antisocial behavior. Research suggests that CU traits are moderately heritable, but also influenced by environmental factors, particularly parenting. We examined associations among mother and father psychopathic traits, parenting practices, and offspring CU traits in a community sample of 550 adolescent twins (Mean age = 13.99 years; SD 2.37; 56.4% male), inc

Adolescence is a period of heightened emotionality, and difficulties with emotion regulation during adolescence are associated with the development of internalizing disorders, especially for girls, who are at elevated risk. Mothers may socialize emotion dysregulation by engaging in frequent interactions with their adolescents that involve mutual increases in arousal. This study tested a model of mother-adolescent mutual arousal escalation in a conflict discussion task in adolescent girls and examined associations between mutual arousal escalation and adolescent emotion regulation. Participants

Although research has indicated that maltreated children are at higher risk of adolescent substance use, it remains unclear whether the type and timing of maltreatment affect the likelihood of adolescent substance use. Research has also found father involvement to be a potential protective factor against adolescent substance use, but the role of quality vs. quantity of father involvement as well as gender differences in the effects of father involvement on substance use among at-risk adolescents have not been studied. The current study adds value to the existing literature by filling these gap

The skills, knowledge, attitudes, motivations, and personality traits that lead to creative thinking and creative behavior do not exist-and do not develop-in a vacuum. They are inextricably tied to content, to domains, in particular, and they therefore vary by domains. The more we learn about creativity, the more we discover how domain specific creativity is. This means we cannot nurture creativity, or any of the skills or attributes that contribute to creativity, without thinking about content. One cannot become physically fit by doing just one kind of exercise that trains a single set of mus

The interrelations between pubertal timing and psychosocial maturation are discussed in three perspectives: the consequences of abnormally precocious or delayed puberty on psychosocial functioning; the impact of lower (early) or upper (late) borderline normal timing of puberty on adolescent exploratory behaviors; and the study of variations in age at onset of puberty in adolescents involved in delinquency.

Attachment, Personality Disorders and Depression in Adolescence Depressive disorders are particularly common in child and adolescent psychiatric settings. There are high comorbidity rates, however, research on comorbid personality disorders in adolescent age groups remains limited. Attachment-related dynamics play a significant role in the development of both depression and personality disorders and they represent important indicators of therapeutic outcomes. The present study shows our latest findings on attachment patterns and personality pathology in an adolescent inpatient psychiatric samp

INTRODUCTION: Vaccines are the most successful and cost-effective public health interventions available to avert vaccine-preventable diseases and deaths. Despite global progress in adolescent health, many adolescents in Africa still get sick and die from vaccine-preventable diseases due to lack of vaccination. Adolescents, parents and teachers are key players in the development and implementation of adolescent vaccination policies. Optimal knowledge, attitudes and practices towards adolescent vaccination among these key players may improve vaccine uptake among adolescents. We conducted a quali

The purpose of the study is to assess the relationship between timing of adolescent development and risk factors for suicide. Nationally representative data from the Add Health survey were used. The relationship of sociodemographic characteristics, known risk factors, and physical developmental timing and cognitive developmental style to suicide attempt was assessed. Depression was a risk factor for suicide attempts in both 9th and 11th grade. Other risk factors differed. Use of illegal drugs, homosexual orientation, using public assistance, and physical development were the important risk fac…

BACKGROUND: A youth mental health crisis is considered one of the great challenges of our time, and research and clinical services in child and adolescent psychiatry have become a priority for governments and funders. Academic leadership is needed to drive forward research. It is not clear how many senior academic leadership posts (professorships) there are in child and adolescent psychiatry, nor how this benchmarks against a similarly sized medical specialty.
AIMS: This study aimed to determine the number of professorships in child and adolescent psychiatry in the UK and Ireland compared to

Peer interactions and influence affect adolescent physical activity (PA) and mental health. Social emotional learning (SEL) can be key to adolescent development and well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the ripple effects and preliminary effectiveness of EmpowerHER, an integrated PA and SEL pilot intervention, on changes in adolescent girls' PA levels and friendship networks during an 8-week summer care program. Adolescents (n=47, ages 10-14 years) wore accelerometers to measure PA and completed surveys on psychological distress, social connectedness, and friendship nominations at the start…

INTRODUCTION: Friendships of adolescent girls play a significant role in providing socio-emotional support and enabling the attainment of developmental tasks. The present exploratory paper focuses on an aspect of close friendships that has yet to be widely examined, which we described as the Adverse Dyadic Friendship (ADF). This is a friendship whose negative elements are perceived from the distance of time as outweighing its positive ones.
METHODS: To examine the features of ADF, a qualitative study based on retrospective data obtained from 34 young adult females (Mage = 31.14, SD = 5.59) wa
