Bivalve sentinels sound the alarm: Rare earth elements patterns along the Mediterranean coast.

Rare earth elements (REEs), or lanthanides, are naturally occurring elements, whose demand has surged in recent years, driven by their use in green energy, electronics, and medical technologies. Despite their expanding applications, knowledge on REEs pollution, bioaccumulation patterns, and environmental dynamics in marine ecosystems remains limited, and regulatory thresholds are still lacking. This study investigates the distribution and bioaccumulation of REEs along the Mediterranean coasts, encompassing the Tyrrhenian, Ionian, and Adriatic Seas. Juvenile and adult individuals of the edible

An integrated geochemical and explainable machine learning framework for mercury dynamics and risk assessment in the Musa Estuary.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in estuarine environments is of increasing concern because of its persistence, transformation into methylmercury (MeHg), and potential ecological and human health impacts. This study investigated the distribution, environmental controls, and health risks of Hg and MeHg in 41 surface sediment samples and 25 water samples collected during a single sampling campaign from the Musa Estuary (southern Iran) by integrating geochemical assessment with explainable machine learning. Sediment total mercury (THg) concentrations ranged 10.97 to 8367.38 μg/kg, while MeHg concentrat

Urban green roofs host intrinsic resistomes shaped by management but not dominated by pathogenic resistance.

BACKGROUND: Urban green roofs are increasingly introduced to enhance urban biodiversity and ecosystem services, yet their role in shaping antimicrobial resistance in cities remains unclear. Using long-read metagenomic sequencing, we characterized antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) across an experimental extensive green roof system with plots under four different management regimes specifically designed to test the influence of vegetation and organic amendments, as green waste, which although widely used to improve substrate quality, has been flagged as a potential ARG source. RESULTS: We d

Long-term assessment of nutrient-induced eutrophication in Xiamen Bay: Implications for integrated watershed-coast management.

Coastal eutrophication, driven by increasing anthropogenic nutrient inputs, represents a major environmental threat to marine ecosystems worldwide. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the spatiotemporal dynamics of eutrophication in Xiamen Bay, a subtropical semi-enclosed coastal system in Southeast China, based on a decadal monitoring dataset (2008-2018) covering spring, summer, and autumn. We applied an adapted version of the HELCOM Eutrophication Assessment Tool (HEAT) to evaluate eutrophication status and identify its key drivers. The results revealed pronounced spatial heterog

Co-Expression Modules and Core Regulatory Factors Linked to Maize Abiotic Stress Resistance Under the Compound Agroecological Stress Index in Southwest China.

Regionally, compound agroecological stress arising from both natural and anthropogenic emergy inputs may influence maize transcriptomic responses; however, evidence across multiple scales remains limited. We developed a reproducible five-step framework integrating a macro-level compound stress index, molecular response modules, cross-scale coupling, spatial continuity, and independent field validation. Nine variables (emergy indicators ELR, Fn, and NEYR; climate; soil; and terrain) were PCA-weighted into a Composite Abiotic Stress Intensity Index (CASI; first three PCs = 83.7%; and prefecture-

Phytoscreening the homes of pregnant residents for volatile organic compounds: a pilot study in metro Detroit.

Exposure to anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has been associated with preterm birth, yet the spatial distribution of VOC exposures within urban environments remains poorly characterized, particularly for vapor intrusion pathways. Plants have recently been used as a cost-effective, non-invasive tool to "phytoscreen" for belowground contaminants. Here, we evaluated the use of phytoscreening within a birth cohort in metro Detroit, Michigan, USA by (a) assessing participant willingness to allow sampling in residential front yards, (b) quantifying VOC concentrations across plant tiss

Genotoxicity and hematological biomarkers in Mugil sp. from a PAH-contaminated urban estuary in Pernambuco, Brazil.

Estuarine ecosystems located in tropical urban regions are increasingly exposed to cumulative anthropogenic and hydroclimatological pressures. This study assessed the environmental health of the Pina Basin estuary (Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil) through an integrated approach combining water quality assessment, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) monitoring, and biomarker responses in resident mullets (Mugil sp.) during dry and rainy seasons. Physicochemical analyses revealed severe environmental degradation, particularly during the rainy season, when dissolved oxygen levels reached critic

Making Restoration Effective for Dynamic Coastal Wetlands.

To halt and reverse the trends of ecosystem loss and degradation under global change, nations globally are promoting ecosystem restoration. Restoration is particularly crucial to coastal wetlands (including tidal marshes, mangrove forests, and tidal flats), which are among the most important ecosystems on Earth but have been severely depleted and degraded. In this review, we explore the question of how to make restoration more effective for coastal wetlands in light of the often-overlooked dynamic nature of these transitional ecosystems between land and ocean. Currently, restoration efforts ha

Spatio-temporal analysis of formaldehyde and its association with atmospheric and environmental variables over the Southeast Asian region using satellite data.

This study investigates the spatio-temporal distribution of formaldehyde (HCHO) over the mainland Southeast Asian region (including Northeast India) from 2019 to 2022 using TROPOMI satellite data. HCHO is a key atmospheric trace gas which is influenced by both natural processes and anthropogenic activities. We analyze HCHO levels in relation to atmospheric species including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and environmental factors such as land surface temperature (LST), precipitation (PPT), fire radiative power (FRP), and enhanced vegetation index (EVI). Peak levels of HCHO are p

Photochemical formation process of ozone and spatiotemporally targeted control strategies along the transport pathways in the Pearl River Delta region.

Regional ozone (O3) pollution is currently a major challenge for urban agglomerations in China, including the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. Understanding the cross-city photochemical evolution of O3 is crucial for developing spatiotemporally targeted control strategies. In this study, three major transport pathways across cities in the PRD region were identified through multiyear airflow trajectory cluster analysis. A photochemical trajectory model (PTM) coupled with the near-explicit Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) was employed to elucidate the photochemical processes along these pathways.

Decoding Stress Responses in Farmed Crustaceans: Comparative Insights for Sustainable Aquaculture Management.

Aquaculture is a crucial food-producing sector that can supply more essential nutrients to nourish the growing human population. However, it faces challenges, including limited water quality and space competition. These constraints have led to the intensification of culture systems for more efficient resource use while maintaining or increasing production levels. However, intensification introduces stress risks to cultured organisms by, for instance, overcrowding, waste accumulation, and water quality deterioration, which can negatively affect the growth, health, and immunity of animals and ca

Wasted shores: Using drones to monitor the spatio-temporal evolution of debris accumulation hotspots on South Africa's Umgeni River.

Rivers are major contributors of plastic waste to the oceans. Running through the northern part of the 1.3 million-inhabitants City of Durban, South Africa, the Umgeni River is estimated to flush in the order of tens to hundreds of tonnes of plastic waste into the Indian Ocean every year. The riverbanks are lined with plastic and other macro-waste accumulation zones formed due to direct littering and occasional deposition of river debris loads. This study presents the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and hydro-meteorological sensors to (1) identify, quantify and monitor such anthropogeni

Urinary health indicators in folivorous-frugivorous primates with and without food supplementation.

Food supplementation by humans in peri-urban and urban landscapes can lead to excessive intake of energy and certain macronutrients, and affect animal health. In this study, we evaluated the influence of food supplementation on urinary health indicators in brown howler monkeys (Alouatta guariba) by comparing supplemented and non-supplemented free-ranging peri-urban groups. We also evaluated the effect of sex, day shift, and season of sampling. Between August 2021 and August 2022, we non-invasively collected 61 samples (43 from females and 18 from males) from adult individuals (N = 10) in three

Assessing ammonium pollution and mitigation measures through a modified watershed non-point source model.

Watershed water quality modeling is a valuable tool for managing ammonium (NH4+) pollution. However, simulating NH4+ pollution presents unique challenges due to the inherent instability of NH4+ in natural environment. This study modified the widely-used Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model to simulate non-point source (NPS) NH4+ processes, specifically incorporating the simulation of land-to-water NH4+ delivery. The Jiulong River Watershed (JRW) is the study area, a coastal watershed in Southeast China with substantial sewage discharge, livestock farming, and fertilizer application. The

Modeling the impact of urban and hospital eco-exposomes on antibiotic-resistance dynamics in wastewaters.

The emergence and selection of antibiotic resistance is a major public health problem worldwide. The presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARBs) in natural and anthropogenic environments threatens the sustainability of efforts to reduce resistance in human and animal populations. Here, we use mathematical modeling of the selective effect of antibiotics and contaminants on the dynamics of bacterial resistance in water to analyze longitudinal spatio-temporal data collected in hospital and urban wastewater between 2012 and 2015. Samples were collected monthly during the study period at four

Population genomic analyses reveal population structure and major hubs of invasive Anopheles stephensi in the Horn of Africa.

Anopheles stephensi invasion in the Horn of Africa (HoA) poses a substantial risk of increased malaria disease burden in the region. An understanding of the history of introduction(s), establishment(s) and potential A. stephensi sources in the HoA is needed to predict future expansions and establish where they may be effectively controlled. To this end, we take a landscape genomic approach to assess A. stephensi origins and spread throughout the HoA, information essential for vector control. Specifically, we assayed 2070 genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms across 214 samples spanning 1

Wind farm noise shifts vocalizations of a threatened shrub-steppe passerine.

Wind energy has experienced a notable development during the last decades, driving new challenges for animal communities. Although bird collisions with wind turbines and spatial displacement due to disturbance have been widely described in the literature, other potential impacts remain unclear. In this study, we addressed the effect of turbine noise on the vocal behaviour of a threatened shrub-steppe passerine highly dependent on acoustic communication, the Dupont's lark Chersophilus duponti. Based on directional recordings of 49 calling and singing males exposed to a gradient of turbine noise
