Effects of maternal L-tryptophan depletion and corticosterone administration on neurobehavioral adjustments in mouse dams and their adolescent and adult daughters.

Major depressive disorder (MDD), a pathology characterized by mood and neurovegetative disturbances, depends on a multi-factorial contribution of individual predisposition (e.g., diminished serotonergic transmission) and environmental factors (e.g., neonatal abuse or neglect). Despite its female-biased prevalence, MDD basic research has mainly focused on male rodents. Most of present models of depression are also devalued due to the fact that they typically address only one of the aforementioned pathogenetic factors. In this paper we first describe the basic principles behind mouse model devel

New Jersey low contact stress total ankle replacement: biomechanical rationale and review of 23 cementless cases.

A congruent contact, unconstrained, multiaxial ankle replacement has been developed for use without cement. A talar onlay component with a trochlear surface and central fixation fin uses a cylindrical articulating axis that reproduces the lateral talar curvature. A tibial inlay component with a 7 degree anteriorly inclined short fixation stem uses a flat loading plate, recessed anatomically into the distal tibia to distribute tibial loads to the ankle joint. For both components, made of cast cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, a 275-micron pore-size, sintered-bead, porous coating is used to allow tiss

Robotic thyroidectomy using Artificial Intelligence (AI) model in real-time recognizing Recurrent Laryngeal Nerves (RLN).

BACKGROUND: Robotic surgery is gaining momentum in thyroidectomy particularly among young female patients. Swallowing, voice disorders, throat discomfort and cervical scarring represent major sources of anxiety due to social and occupational concerns. This has driven demand for precise and scarless approaches to improve safe and cosmetic outcomes to reduce psychological burden [1]. While endoscopic thyroidectomy has gained popularity, its technical limitations including restricted endoscopic visualization, limitation of fixed magnification, and the 'chopstick' effect of rigid instruments compr

Myofunctional and speech rehabilitation after orthodontic-surgical treatment of dento-maxillofacial dysgnathia.

OBJECTIVES: The lingual dysfunctions play a considerable role in the pathogenesis of dentoskeletal dysmorphisms. The treatment of dento-maxillofacial dysgnathia implies a functional rehabilitation to re-harmonize the stomatognathic system. This study aims to demonstrate the importance of a rehabilitation protocol of functional orofacial parameters at the end of a surgical-orthodontic treatment in order to achieve long-term success. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After orthognathic surgery, facial expression exercises and jaw exercises are prescribed to promote the recovery of neuromuscular function.

Spelling Outcomes in Adolescents and Young Adults With Childhood Apraxia of Speech Reveal Persistent Linguistic Deficits.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to characterize sources of variability in spelling performance in adolescents and young adults with a history of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), including linguistic skills, motor-speech sequencing, spelling error types, and residual speech errors. We also examined whether selected endophenotypes differ from peers with a history of speech sound disorder without CAS (SSD-no CAS). METHOD: Correlations assessed relations among single-word decoding, oral language, phonological awareness, syllable sequencing, and spelling in participants with a history of CAS

Complete Resection of a Giant Middle Mediastinal Castleman Disease Using Robot-Assisted Thoracic Surgery: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Castleman disease is a rare benign lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by lymph node hyperplasia. Unicentric Castleman disease (UCD) involves a single anatomical region. Complete surgical resection remains the standard treatment. Lesions in the middle mediastinum can become large and technically demanding because of their proximity to the trachea, esophagus, and major vessels. Although video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery has been used in selected cases, reports of robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) for giant UCD arising in the subcarinal middle mediastinum remain extr

A comparison of multidisciplinary team residential rehabilitation with conventional outpatient care for the treatment of non-arthritic intra-articular hip pain in UK Military personnel - a protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BackgroundNon-arthritic hip disorders are defined as abnormalities of the articulating surfaces of the acetabulum and femur before the onset of osteoarthritis, including intra-articular structures such as the acetabular labrum and chondral surfaces. Abnormal femoroacetabular morphology is commonly seen in young men who constitute much of the UK military population. Residential multidisciplinary team (MDT) rehabilitation for patients with musculoskeletal injuries has a long tradition in the UK military, however, there are no studies presenting empirical data on the efficacy of a residential MDT

Rethinking speech sound disorder (SSD) in non-syndromic cleft lip and palate: The importance of recognizing phonological and language difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Children born with cleft palate ± lip (CP ± L) are at risk of speech sound disorder (SSD). Up to 40% continue to have SSD at age 5-6 years. These difficulties are typically described as articulatory in nature and often include cleft speech characteristics (CSC) hypothesized to result from structural differences. In non-CP ± L SSD comorbidity with language difficulties is often reported. There is growing evidence of concomitant language difficulties in children with CP ± L and of a higher prevalence of developmental speech errors in children compared with non-CP ± L peers. The impac

Outcome of carotid endarterectomy for acute neurological deficit.

We reviewed our experience with urgent carotid intervention in the setting of acute neurological deficits. Between June 1992 and August 2008, a total of 3145 carotid endarterectomies (CEA) were performed. Twenty-seven patients (<1.0%) were categorized as urgent. The mean age was 74.1 years (range 56-93 years) with 16 (60%) men, and 11 (40%) women, Symptoms included extremity weakness or paralysis (n=13), amaurosis fugax (n=6), speech difficulty (n=2), and syncope, (n=3). Three patients exhibited a combination of these symptoms. Three open thrombectomy were performed. Regional anesthesia was us

Condylar position indicator and T-scan system II in clinical evaluation of temporomandibular intracapsular disease.

INTRODUCTION: The pathogenesis of temporomandibular joint intracapsular disease (TMJI) is multifactorial and its diagnosis is not easy. In this work authors show two types of clinical analysis: the Condylar Position Indicator (CPI) and T-Scan 2 system. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty patients (mean age of 24.5 years) with TMJI problem and 10 healthy matched subjects (mean age: 25.4 years) were selected. Analysis of TMJI was performed on each patient by means of Condylar Position Indicator (CPI) and T-Scan System II tests. RESULTS: Eight patients presented vertical symmetrical condylar distracti

State-by-State Variation in the Credentialing, Training, Supervision, and Medicaid Reimbursement of the High-School, Associates, and Bachelor's-Level Addiction Counselor Workforce.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased demand, few people receive the addiction services they need, and substance use disorders (SUD) workforce shortages persist. Addiction counselors are a workforce that can help address SUD needs. However, recent projections highlight national shortages of nearly 88 000 addiction counselors through 2036. Given state variations, it is difficult to discern how high school- and bachelor's-level (HS/BA) addiction counselors are defined based on education and training, state credentialing requirements, and Medicaid reimbursement allowances. METHODS: A state policy analys

Local modulation of the Wnt/β-catenin and bone morphogenic protein (BMP) pathways recapitulates rib defects analogous to cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome.

Ribs are seldom affected by developmental disorders, however, multiple defects in rib structure are observed in the spliceosomal disease cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome (CCMS). These defects include rib gaps, found in the posterior part of the costal shaft in multiple ribs, as well as missing ribs, shortened ribs and abnormal costotransverse articulations, which result in inadequate ventilation at birth and high perinatal mortality. The genetic mechanism of CCMS is a loss-of-function mutation in SNRPB, a component of the major spliceosome, and knockdown of this gene in vitro affects the acti

Exploring vowel errors produced in nonword repetition in children with speech and language disorders.

BACKGROUND: Accurate nonword repetition (NWR) is contingent on many underlying skills, including encoding, memory and motor planning and programming. Though vowel errors are frequently associated with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), several recent studies have found that children with developmental language disorder (DLD) produce high rates of vowel errors in NWR tasks. AIMS: This retrospective analysis explored whether the overall frequency and types of vowel errors produced in NWR distinguish children with DLD, children with CAS, children with speech sound disorder (SSD) and children wit

Kafkaesque systems: An interpretative phenomenological analysis of lived experiences of stateless migrants within the UK.

Statelessness affects an estimated 4.3 to 10 million people worldwide, denying them access to fundamental rights including education, employment, healthcare, and freedom from arbitrary detention. While stateless individuals are recognised as a marginalised group at elevated risk of human rights violations, discrimination, and trauma, the psychological impact of statelessness remains under-researched. This study aimed to explore how adults with lived experience of statelessness in the UK make sense of its impact on their mental health, and how they access support for any psychological difficult

White Matter Integrity and Treatment-Based Change in Speech Performance in Minimally Verbal Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

We investigated the relationship between imaging variables for two language/speech-motor tracts and speech fluency variables in 10 minimally verbal (MV) children with autism. Specifically, we tested whether measures of white matter integrity-fractional anisotropy (FA) of the arcuate fasciculus (AF) and frontal aslant tract (FAT)-were related to change in percent syllable-initial consonants correct, percent items responded to, and percent syllable insertion errors (from best baseline to post 25 treatment sessions). Twenty-three MV children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) received Auditory-M

Understanding 'not': neuropsychological dissociations between hand and head markers of negation in BSL.

Simple negation in natural languages represents a complex interrelationship of syntax, prosody, semantics and pragmatics, and may be realised in various ways: lexically, morphologically and prosodically. In almost all spoken languages, the first two of these are the primary realisations of syntactic negation. In contrast, in many signed languages negation can occur without lexical or morphological marking. Thus, in British Sign Language (BSL), negation is obligatorily expressed using face-head actions alone (facial negation) with the option of articulating a manual form alongside the required

[Latarjet procedure for the treatment of inveterated shoulder dislocations].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Transfer of the tip of the coracoid process to the anterior margin of the glenoid is a procedure indicated in shoulder instability due to bone lesion. However, it is also used in inveterated shoulder dislocations refractory to conservative treatment that require open reduction of the joint. The bone block thus created allows for more effective and safer rehabilitation than does a temporary rigid Ki-wire fixation of the humeral head. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the group of patients treated for irreducible inveterated shoulder dislocations by the La

"They Can't Believe They're a Tiger": Insights from pediatric speech-language pathologist mobile app users and app designers.

BACKGROUND: Children with communication disorders experience difficulty in one or more areas of articulation and speech, language, fluency, voice and social communication, and they work with speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to improve their communication. With the rise of adoption and use for mobile applications among special education and healthcare service providers, SLPs also have implemented, and for some, contributed to the design of, mobile applications (apps) during clinical practice. However, how these mobile apps are designed and implemented for clinicians to facilitate their clien
