Phytochemical insights and green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Maytenus gracilipes, with evaluation of their antibacterial activity.

BACKGROUND: The evergreen shrub Maytenus gracilipes (Celastraceae), used in Ethiopian traditional medicine to treat tonsillitis, ear infecti … tracts and biosynthesized silver nanoparticles were effective against the tested bacterial strains (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhi) at different concentrations (100, 50, and 25 µg/disc). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that M. gracilipes exhibits substantial phytochemical diversity and promising antibacterial a …

Evaluation of Surface Disinfection Efficiency of Vinegar and Asafoetida.

BACKGROUND: Contaminated surfaces play a crucial role in transmitting infectious diseases. Effective surface disinfection is essential for i … smooth surfaces, contaminated with organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger. Samples were collected before and after applying the test solution. Additionally, a real-settings swab test was performed on 20 sites with diverse textures within hospital and workplace settings to assess th …

Antiviral and virucidal activities against SARS-CoV-2 and antibacterial properties of bile acids and their salts with naturally occurring organic cations of l-carnitine, creatinine, and choline.

Bile acids have many roles in biological systems, and they have received great attention recently. Bile from a cow, known as gall, together … s DCA (5), UDCA (9), and CDCA (13) exhibited antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Enterococcus faecalis) and against a Gram-negative bacterium (Escherichia coli). Cholinium salts of these bile acids exhibited enhanced antibacterial activity; for example, 41.4-41.5% antibacte …

Exploring the Utility of Prunus mahaleb Extracts as a Source of Natural Bioactive Compounds for Functional Applications.

Prunus mahaleb has garnered attention as a potent medicinal agent and functional component. We aimed to detect the chemical composition and … ffectiveness at dosages between 6.25 and 0.195 mg/mL, particularly effective against Sarcina lutea, Bacillus cereus, Candida albicans, and Staphylococcus aureus. Our findings indicate that P. mahaleb can serve as a versatile raw material for the development of health-promoting applications, including medicines, cosmeceuticals, and nutraceuticals.

Rapid and reasonable molecular identification of bacteria and fungi in microbiological diagnostics using rapid real-time PCR and Sanger sequencing.

Analyses of short subunit gene sequences have been established for taxonomic classification and identification of bacteria and fungi. To produce partial bacterial ribosomal 16S rRNA and rpoB and fungal ribosomal ITS/LSU gene sequences for DNA sequencing, real-time PCR assays supplemented with the nucleic acid stain SYBR Green were created. Generation of PCR products was monitored based on amplification and melting curves. The PCR products were subsequently subjected to Sanger sequencing on demand for identification of bacteria and fungi in routine microbiological diagnostics within a period of

Pathogenicity, population genetics and dissemination of Bacillus anthracis.

Bacillus anthracis, the etiological agent of anthrax, procures its particular virulence by a capsule and two AB type toxins: the lethal factor LF and the edema factor EF. These toxins primarily disable immune cells. Both toxins are translocated to the host cell by the adhesin-internalin subunit called protective antigen PA. PA enables LF to reach intra-luminal vesicles, where it remains active for long periods. Subsequently, LF translocates to non-infected cells, leading to inefficient late therapy of anthrax. B. anthracis undergoes slow evolution because it alternates between vegetative and l

Temporal dynamics in microbial soil communities at anthrax carcass sites.

BACKGROUND: Anthrax is a globally distributed disease affecting primarily herbivorous mammals. It is caused by the soil-dwelling and spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis. The dormant B. anthracis spores become vegetative after ingestion by grazing mammals. After killing the host, B. anthracis cells return to the soil where they sporulate, completing the lifecycle of the bacterium. Here we present the first study describing temporal microbial soil community changes in Etosha National Park, Namibia, after decomposition of two plains zebra (Equus quagga) anthrax carcasses. To circumvent sta
