Phosphorescence properties, luminescence mechanism and application of pharmaceutical room temperature phosphorescent materials.

Room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials constitute an emerging class of functional materials with significant potential for enhancing drug quality control, biological imaging and anti-counterfeiting encryption technologies. However, conventional RTP materials exhibit drawbacks such as high toxicity, complex synthesis, challenging purification processes, excessive byproduct generation, etc. These challenges prevent them from realizing the strict standards for pharmaceutical applications. As a result, the development of RTP materials is constrained by the conflict between biocompatibilit

Biocompatibility and tissue integration of autologous fat grafts and synthetic implants following submucosal implantation into the urinary bladder.

BACKGROUND: In urological practice, the search continues for volume-forming materials with optimal biocompatibility, a prolonged therapeutic effect, and a minimal risk of complications. This issue is particularly critical in reconstructive and functional urology, where longterm stability of the outcome is required without inducing damage to the surrounding tissues. Existing synthetic and biological fillers present several limitations, including a tendency toward resorption, fibrosis, shape instability, and the risk of immune reactions. Although the efficacy of certain materials has been demons

Peripheral nerve regeneration using bioresorbable macroporous polylactide scaffolds.

The ability of DRG-derived neurons to survive and attach onto macroporous polylactide (PLA) foams was assessed in vitro. The foams were fabricated using a thermally induced polymer-solvent phase separation. Two types of pore structures, namely oriented or interconnected pores, can be produced, depending on the mechanism of phase separation, which in turn can be predicted by the thermodynamics of the polymer-solvent pair. Coating of the porous foams with polyvinylalcohol (PVA) considerably improved the wettability of the foams and allowed for cell culture. The in vitro biocompatibility of the P

Local Toxicity of Topically Administrated Thermoresponsive Systems: In Vitro Studies with In Vivo Correlation.

Thermoresponsive materials have the ability to respond to a small change in temperature-a property that makes them useful in a wide range of applications and medical devices. Although very promising, there is only little conclusive data about the cytotoxicity and tissue toxicity of these materials. This work studied the biocompatibility of three Food and Drug Administration approved thermoresponsive polymers: poly( N-isopropyl acrylamide), poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(propylene glycol)-poly(ethylene glycol) tri-block copolymer, and poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) and poly(ethylene glycol) tri

Evaluation of Remodeling and Regeneration of Electrospun PLGA@PCL/Elastin Small-Diameter Vascular Grafts In Vivo.

Bypass vascular grafting is an effective treatment for cardiovascular disease. Currently, small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs, inner diameter <6 mm) for peripheral revascularization, especially for lower limb revascularization, are in high demand. Previously, we prepared and investigated PLGA@PCL SDVGs with core/shell fibers. In this study, PLGA@PCL/elastin core/shell fibers (PCEs) SDVGs were further prepared by electrospinning, so as to enhance the vascular regeneration performance through the introduction of exogenous soluble elastin. The cross-linking effects of elastin with different cro

Murine Biocompatibility Evaluation of an Albumin-Derived Complex and Nanoparticle Delivery System for Ocular Applications.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss in the aging population, with no curative treatment currently available. Current therapies primarily target late-stage symptoms and are limited by their frequent and invasive intravitreal (IVT) injections. To address oxidative stress-induced inflammation mechanisms relevant to early retinal degeneration, we developed a heme-bound human serum albumin (heme-albumin) complex designed to transiently induce heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a cytoprotective enzyme with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Polydopamin

Nanocoatings through Plasma Technology to Tailor the Chemical, Physicochemical, Mechanical, and Biological Properties of the Biomineralization Membrane.

Nanocoatings for the biomineralization membrane were developed on a gelatin (Gel) and carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA) composite, namely, Gel/CHA membrane. The membrane, which contains bioactive polymer and a mineral phase, was further modified using plasma to deposit thin functional polymeric films. These surface-tailored nanocoatings improved the membrane's performance by increasing its swelling capacity to better mimic a tissue-like environment, strengthening its mechanical stability during application, and modulating interactions with biological components such as proteins to support tissue

Sustainable metallic biomaterials for orthopaedic implants: a comprehensive review of biodegradable and conventional metals.

The selection of biomaterial is crucial for the long-term success of implants. Materials that perform an adequate function and reduce negative biological responses should be taken. Due to their good mechanical strength, stainless steel, titanium, and Co-based alloys have been utilized for implant purposes; however, their permanent nature and very low corrosion rates may lead to long-term clinical complications. Researchers are looking for biomaterials that combine suitable mechanical properties with controlled and uniform degradation behaviour. In the last decade, magnesium and iron-based allo

Comparison of wear on articular cartilage from polycarbonate-urethane and other implant biomaterials.

Talar replacement procedures offer good clinical outcomes for patients experiencing talar osteonecrosis with collapse. However, there is a potential for cartilage wear as the artificial talus prosthesis articulates against the native articular cartilage (AC) in the ankle joint. Therefore, this study investigated the wear of AC against candidate implant biomaterials with the aim of selecting an appropriate material for use in talar replacement procedures. Cobalt chrome alloy (Co-28Cr-6Mo), titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V), ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), industrial grade natural po

Low-Frequency Ultrasound Mechanostimulation for Targeting Fibrotic Cells for Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy Treatment.

Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is a retinal disorder characterized by migration of retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE) into the vitreous cavity through the retinal tear and their epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), followed by the development of a fibrotic condition. Here, we demonstrate that low-frequency ultrasound (LFU) applied using a controlled ultrasonic actuation platform selectively induces apoptosis in EMT-activated RPE cells through LFU-mediated mechanical forces, without damaging normal RPE cells. Furthermore, LFU treatment disrupts myosin IIA-mediated contractilit

Upconversion-Mediated Phototherapy for Psoriasis Treatment.

Psoriasis is a chronic, relapsing, immune-mediated systemic inflammatory disease that affects 2-3% of the global population. It affects the skin and leads to complications in multiple systems, severely impacting patients' quality of life. Although traditional topical therapies, systemic treatments, phototherapy, and emerging biological treatments have progressed in treating psoriatic dermatitis, they still cannot cure psoriasis and are associated with multiple side effects, including infections and phototoxicity. Building upon conventional narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy, our re

Tuning of Bacterial Cellulose Hydrogel Architecture during Fermentation through Polymer-Modified Growth Media.

The formation of bacterial cellulose pellicles by Acetobacter xylinum is investigated in growth media supplemented with sodium alginate (SA) or carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). Both polymers influence bacterial cellulose assembly during growth, but through distinct physicochemical mechanisms. In SA-containing media, increased viscosity reduces bacterial mobility and promotes the formation of denser pellicles with reduced interlayer spacing and porosity, without substantially affecting cellulose production. In contrast, under the acidic culture conditions used in this study, CMC undergoes pH-depen

Fabrication of a Silk-Glycerol-Based Flexible Electrode Decorated with WO3 Nanorods for Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Detection of Bacteria.

This paper reports the preparation and characterization of a silk-glycerol composite-based, biocompatible, optically transparent, and flexible substrate. Blending glycerol with silk not only eliminates the brittleness of pure silk films but also enhances flexibility and long-term mechanical stability. Its applicability in the electrochemical detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria on a screen-printed electrode system is a testament to the robustness of the substrate. To improve the sensitivity and selectivity of E. coli detection, the working electrode is modified with amine-functiona

Evaluation of mechanical biocompatibility of cog threads for prolapse repair.

Pelvic floor disorders (PFD), including Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP), can negatively impact a woman's daily activities and quality of life. POP is a growing concern, with an increasing number of cases each year and significant numbers of women going through surgery to alleviate it. Traditional interventions like the use of mesh implants have certain limitations such as repeated surgeries. An alternative surgical intervention technique using injectable biodegradable cog threads was suggested. The application of Finite element analysis (FEA) to this research allows us to personalize and select su
