SERS sensing for cancer biomarker: Approaches and directions.

These days, cancer is thought to be more than just one illness, with several complex subtypes that require different screening approaches. These subtypes can be distinguished by the distinct markings left by metabolites, proteins, miRNA, and DNA. Personalized illness management may be possible if cancer is categorized according to its biomarkers. In order to stop cancer from spreading and posing a significant risk to patient survival, early detection and prompt treatment are essential. Traditional cancer screening techniques are tedious, time-consuming, and require expert personnel for analysi

Explainability for artificial intelligence in healthcare: a multidisciplinary perspective.

BACKGROUND: Explainability is one of the most heavily debated topics when it comes to the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Even though AI-driven systems have been shown to outperform humans in certain analytical tasks, the lack of explainability continues to spark criticism. Yet, explainability is not a purely technological issue, instead it invokes a host of medical, legal, ethical, and societal questions that require thorough exploration. This paper provides a comprehensive assessment of the role of explainability in medical AI and makes an ethical evaluation of wha

Stated preferences for new HIV prevention technologies among men who have sex with men in India: A discrete choice experiment.

INTRODUCTION: India has the second largest HIV epidemic in the world. Despite successes in epidemic control at the population level, a concentrated epidemic persists among gay and other men who have sex with men (MSM). However, India lags in implementation of biomedical prevention technologies, such as HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). In order to inform scale-up of new HIV prevention technologies, including those in the development pipeline, we assessed willingness to use oral PrEP, rectal microbicides, and HIV vaccines, and choices among product characteristics, among MSM in two major Ind

Artificial Intelligence-based Analytics for Diagnosis of Small Bowel Enteropathies and Black Box Feature Detection.

OBJECTIVES: Striking histopathological overlap between distinct but related conditions poses a disease diagnostic challenge. There is a major clinical need to develop computational methods enabling clinicians to translate heterogeneous biomedical images into accurate and quantitative diagnostics. This need is particularly salient with small bowel enteropathies; environmental enteropathy (EE) and celiac disease (CD). We built upon our preliminary analysis by developing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based image analysis platform utilizing deep learning convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for

Do patients and research subjects have a right to receive their genomic raw data? An ethical and legal analysis.

BACKGROUND: As Next Generation Sequencing technologies are increasingly implemented in biomedical research and (translational) care, the number of study participants and patients who ask for release of their genomic raw data is set to increase. This raises the question whether research participants and patients have a legal and moral right to receive their genomic raw data and, if so, how this right should be implemented into practice. METHODS: In a first step we clarify some central concepts such as "raw data"; in a second step we sketch the international legal framework. The third step prov

Enhancing health literacy and patient engagement through a privacy-aware social network-based digital health communication framework.

Digital health applications and social-network-enabled healthcare platforms have transformed healthcare delivery by facilitating health communication, patient engagement, and access to medical information. However, the continuous exchange of sensitive biomedical data across interconnected digital environments raises significant ethical, privacy, and security challenges that may compromise user trust and the effective adoption of digital health technologies. Existing studies primarily address individual security and privacy concerns, with limited attention to integrated frameworks that simultan

From Magnetic Moment to Magnetic Particle Imaging: A Comprehensive Review on MPI Technology, Tracer Design and Biological Applications.

Background/Objectives: Magnetic nanoparticles have emerged as powerful tools for biomedical imaging, targeted drug delivery, and hyperthermia therapy. Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is among the most promising technologies built around its properties: a radiation-free, quantitative tomographic modality that detects superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) directly against a biologically silent background. This review synthesizes MPI's physical principles, nanoparticle design strategies, and preclinical applications within the broader landscape of magnetic material engineering for b

COVID-19 Mitigation Steps Provide a Blueprint for Malaria Control and Elimination.

Most countries around the world have responded promptly to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) challenge by adopting considered and scientifically guided strategies for its containment. However, the situation is more complex for nations where malaria is endemic, as they now have the additional burden of COVID-19. In such nations, the healthcare systems are either in the preparatory or containment phase of the current pandemic. This enforced, sudden, and sharp public health refocus is likely to result in the disruption of annual malaria control activities such as distribution of insecticid

Implantable Devices for Single-Sided Deafness and Conductive or Mixed Hearing Loss: A Health Technology Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Single-sided deafness refers to profound sensorineural hearing loss or non-functional hearing in one ear, with normal or near-normal hearing in the other ear. Its hallmark is the inability to localize sound and hear in noisy environments. Conductive hearing loss occurs when there is a mechanical problem with the conduction of sound vibrations. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. Conductive and mixed hearing loss, which frequently affect both ears, create additional challenges in learning, employment, and quality of life. Cochlear implan

Defining a correlate of protection for chikungunya virus vaccines.

Chikungunya virus infection causes a debilitating febrile illness that in many affected individuals is associated with long-term sequelae that can persist for months or years. Over the past decade a large number of candidate vaccines have been developed, several of which have now entered clinical trials. The rapid and sporadic nature of chikungunya outbreaks poses challenges for planning of large clinical efficacy trials suggesting that licensure of chikungunya vaccines may utilize non-traditional approval pathways based on identification of immunological endpoint(s) predictive of clinical ben

CollAborative care for Screen-Positive EldeRs with major depression (CASPER plus): a multicentred randomised controlled trial of clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Depression in older adults is common and is associated with poor quality of life, increased morbidity and early mortality, and increased health and social care use. Collaborative care, a low-intensity intervention for depression that is shown to be effective in working-age adults, has not yet been evaluated in older people with depression who are managed in UK primary care. The CollAborative care for Screen-Positive EldeRs (CASPER) plus trial fills the evidence gap identified by the most recent guidelines on depression management. OBJECTIVES: To establish the clinical effectivenes

The Head Injury Transportation Straight to Neurosurgery (HITS-NS) randomised trial: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Reconfiguration of trauma services, with direct transport of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients to neuroscience centres (NCs), bypassing non-specialist acute hospitals (NSAHs), could potentially improve outcomes. However, delays in stabilisation of airway, breathing and circulation (ABC) and the difficulties in reliably identifying TBI at scene may make this practice deleterious compared with selective secondary transfer from nearest NSAH to NC. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance and systematic reviews suggested equipoise and poor-quality evidence - with

Active books: the design of an implantable stimulator that minimizes cable count using integrated circuits very close to electrodes.

This paper presents an integrated stimulator that can be embedded in implantable electrode books for interfacing with nerve roots at the cauda equina. The Active Book overcomes the limitation of conventional nerve root stimulators which can only support a small number of stimulating electrodes due to cable count restriction through the dura. Instead, a distributed stimulation system with many tripole electrodes can be configured using several Active Books which are addressed sequentially. The stimulator was fabricated in a 0.6-μm high-voltage CMOS process and occupies a silicon area of 4.2 × 6

"New-generation" pulse oximeters in extremely low-birth-weight infants: how do they perform in clinical practice?

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of "new-generation" pulse oximeters in extremely low-birth-weight ([ELBW] ≤ 1000 g) infants. In a prospective crossover observational study, the performance of pulse oximeters of 3 brands (Masimo, Nellcor, and Philips) was evaluated by dual SpO2 measurement in ELBW infants. Disposable probes of either equal or different brands were placed around both feet of the patient simultaneously for approximately 4 hours. Probes were switched between feet every hour. Absolute differences in SpO2 values (ΔSpO2) and the bias between brands were studied.
