In this study, the levels and distribution patterns of HBCD diastereoisomers in air, water, soil, and sediment samples in South Korea were investigated after optimizing the UPLC-MS/MS analytical process. Extraction and cleanup efficiencies were tested using several different extraction solvents and adsorbents. Dichloromethane was selected as the base extraction solvent, and multi-layer silica gel (MSG) and MSG-alumina columns were selected for the removal of HBCDs from complex environmental matrices. Hexabromocyclododecane diastereoisomers (α, β, and γ-HBCD) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) were investigated in air conditioning filter dust (designated as particulate phase of indoor air, PPIA) collected from an office building in Shenzhen, China in 2009. Concentrations of ΣHBCD (sum of α-, β-, and γ-HBCD) ranged from 652 to 122, 973 ng/g in PPIA. Generally, γ-HBCD was the most abundant diastereomer. Chemical investigation of Indonesian marine sponges Agelas linnaei and A. nakamurai afforded 24 alkaloid derivatives representing either bromopyrrole or diterpene alkaloids. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and MMP-2 are important for recovery following direct traumatic injury within the central nervous system (CNS). However, most CNS injury models include both direct trauma and neuronal deafferentation. This limits the ability to determine if these MMPs are important to one or both components of injury. Methyl bromide chemical burns are rare. Only two cases have been reported to date. The presentation of methyl bromide chemical burns is unusual. Patients with an acute exposure should be observed closely as the initial presentation can appear deceptively benign. The latency period lasts several hours prior to the development of chemical burn wounds. In this article, we review the literature on methyl bromide chemical burns and present our experience managing a patient with an extensive methyl bromide burn.

The halogenated natural product previously named mixed-halogenated compound 1 (MHC-1) was isolated from the red seaweed Plocamium cartilagineum harvested in Helgoland, Germany.
