Directly measured strain patterns of the anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular ligaments after isolated ATFL repair in a combined ATFL and CFL injury: A cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Even though 20% of chronic lateral ankle instability results from a combined anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) injury, only the ATFL is sutured using arthroscopic ligament repair techniques. Although some biomechanical and clinical studies have proved that isolated ATFL repair yields excellent results, previous biomechanical studies were performed using systems that only allow indirect estimations. The purpose of this study was to clarify strain patterns by directly measuring repaired ATFL and CFL strain patterns on cadaveric models that underw…

Division of the right posterior attachments of the head of the pancreas with a linear stapler during pancreaticoduodenectomy: vascular and oncological considerations based on an anatomical cadaver-based study.

BACKGROUND: Section of the right posterior attachment (RPA) of the pancreatic head from the adventicia of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) is the last step of pancreaticoduodenectomy. This procedure might be technically demanding, time consuming and potentially dangerous. A method using a stapler has been proposed to simplify this step of the pancreaticoduodenectomy. METHODS: To evaluate the potential consequences of RPA section using this new method, we used an experimental model of pancreaticoduodenectomy in 20 cadavers. After RPA stapling, the residual areolar tissue located between th…

Triangular Screw Placement to Treat Dysmorphic Sacral Fragility Fractures in Osteoporotic Bone Results in an Equivalent Stability to Cement-Augmented Sacroiliac Screws-A Biomechanical Cadaver Study.

Background: Sacroiliac screw fixation in elderly patients with pelvic fractures remains a challenging procedure for stabilization due to impaired bone quality. To improve it, we investigated the biomechanical properties of combined oblique sacroiliac and transiliosacral screw stabilization versus the additional cement augmentation of this construct in a cadaver model of osteoporotic bone, specifically with respect to the maximal force stability and fracture-site motion in the displacement and rotation of fragments. Methods: Standardized complete sacral fractures with intact posterior ligaments…

Biomechanical analysis of cervical and thoracolumbar spine motion in intact and partially and completely unstable cadaver spine models with kinetic bed therapy or traditional log roll.

BACKGROUND: The main comorbidities associated with spinal cord injury patients are secondary to immobilization. Kinetic bed therapy is used currently to reduce the complications associated with immobilization, but the effect on the unstable spine has not been quantified. The purpose of this study was to compare the motion in the cervical and thoracolumbar spine when cadavers with spinal instabilities are log rolled (LR) on a standard hospital bed or rotated on a RotoRest kinetic treatment table (KTT). METHODS: Cervical and lumbar instabilities were created surgically in three embalmed cadaver…

Feasibility and placement accuracy of a sensor-guided intraosseous device with an automated stop in a small-bone rat cadaver model: a single-arm pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid intraosseous (IO) access is critical in emergency care when venous access is not feasible. IO access is particularly prone to error in small animals and human neonates with narrow medullary cavities. This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and placement accuracy of a novel sensor-guided IO drilling device with an automatic stop mechanism in a rat cadaver model. METHODS: Seven thawed Sprague-Dawley rat cadavers underwent 14 tibial insertions by a single experienced operator using a standardised protocol. Placement was assessed by computed tomography (CT), with successful i…

Differences in valgus and internal-rotation instability after sequential distal ulnar collateral ligament release: a cadaveric study using Thiel-embalmed cadavers.

BACKGROUND: Distal ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears in overhead athletes have poorer outcomes with conservative treatment than proximal tears, potentially because of limited vascularity and altered ulnohumeral alignment. Previous in vivo studies have demonstrated excessive internal rotation malalignment in distal UCL tears. Nonetheless, it remains unclear whether distal tears produce greater internal rotation instability compared with valgus instability. This cadaveric study aimed to quantify valgus and internal rotation instabilities after sequential distal UCL tears using ultrasonograph…

The fungal biocontrol agent Beauveria bassiana expresses a HsbA domain-containing protein to postpone the rapid cuticle penetration outwards from the insect cadavers.

The insect biocontrol fungi (IBF) 'hidden' within the dead insect bodies come out of the insect cadavers for dissemination until the suitable environment conditions arising. However, details of the IBF balancing fungal cells 'hidden' within the cadavers and penetration of the cuticle outwards for growth remain limited. Here, a HsbA domain-containing protein, BbHsbA, was found to express during the later stages of insect colonization in an IBF, Beauveria bassiana, which distributed in cytoplasm and cell wall. BbHsbA disruption did not significantly affect fungal virulence, while the mutant pene…
