An epidemic of histoplasmosis on the Isthmus of Panama.

Forty-seven men on the Isthmus of Panama were exposed to histoplasmosis in an old bunker inhabited by bats. The resulting epidemic was studied with serial clinical, serological, and radiological examinations. Thirty-seven (78.7%) of the men showed serological evidence of infection and 26 (70.3%) had symptoms. Incubation periods ranged from 4 to 30 days. A general relationship between severity of illness and degree of exposure was noted. The agar gel diffusion test for precipitin antibodies was more sensitive than the complement-fixation test or slide test in detecting infection with Histoplasm

Serological evidence of infection of Tacaribe virus and arboviruses in Trinidadian bats.

Sera from 39 species of bats collected in Trinidad between 1972 and 1974 were tested against some or all of 18 arboviruses in hemagglutination inhibition (HI) and/or suckling mouse neutralization (N) tests. A few sera were HI-positive with Mucambo, eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), Oriboca, Restan, Manzanilla, Guama, Bimiti, and Catu. No sera were HI-positive with Mayaro, Caraparu or Maguari. Many ser inhibited one or more of the group B hemagglutinins: Ilheus, St. Louis encephalitis (SLE), dengue 2, and yellow fever (YF), positives occurred in nearly every species of bat, being most frequent

Astrovirus infection alters gut microbial communities in a widespread neotropical bat across human-modified landscapes.

Astroviruses are becoming a growing concern in public and veterinary health. In humans, astrovirus infections can cause severe diarrhea and may lead to neuropathological encephalitis, whereas in wildlife, these enteropathogenic viral infections often lack overt symptoms and thus remain unnoticed. Yet their close interaction with the host's gastrointestinal microbiome might drive cascading effects with disadvantages for host health. Bats harbor many zoonotic viruses without showing signs of disease, and many species move freely along the gradient from pristine to agricultural landscapes. To bet

In vitro functional characterization of Tadarida brasiliensis interferon-β: promoter responsiveness, antiviral activity, and JAK-dependent transcriptional responses.

INTRODUCTION: Bats display diverse antiviral responses, but interferon-β remains poorly characterized in many bat species. Here, we characterized interferon-β from Tadarida brasiliensis (TBIFN-β) in Tb 1 Lu cells, focusing on its sequence features, promoter responsiveness, antiviral activity, and downstream signaling. METHODS: TBIFN-β was analyzed by comparative sequence analysis and homology modeling. TBIFNB promoter fragments were evaluated using dual-luciferase assays following batIRF1 expression or poly(I:C) treatment. Antiviral activity was assessed using VSV-GFP and VACV-GFP infection m

Ephrin B2 and Ephrin B3 are receptors for a novel putative henipavirus with zoonotic potential.

Next-generation sequencing has accelerated the discovery of novel putative viruses in wildlife reservoirs, while identifying those with zoonotic potential remains challenging. In this study, we report the identification and characterization of Ailong virus, a novel putative henipavirus from previous bat metagenomes in China that utilizes human ephrin B2 (EFNB2) and EFNB3 as functional receptors. Using an integrated approach combining phylogenetic analysis, pseudotyped virus entry assays, antibody blockade assays, and structural modeling, we demonstrate that Ailong virus glycoprotein binds huma

Molecular detection and diversity of Bartonella spp. in non-hematophagous bats from the Peruvian Amazon.

The Bartonella genus comprises a variety of species capable of infecting a wide range of mammals through hematophagous arthropods, such as fleas, ticks, flies, and lice. Domestic (dogs and cats) and wild (rodents and bats) reservoirs harbor species with zoonotic potential. This molecular study identified the diversity of Bartonella spp. in bats from the Peruvian Amazon. Blood samples from 62 bats were molecularly analyzed for the detection of Bartonella spp. by amplification of the 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the citrate synthase (gltA) gene. The ITS region amplificati

Vocalization-induced middle ear muscle reflex and auditory fovea do not contribute to the unimpaired auditory sensitivity after intense noise exposure in the CF-FM bat, Hipposideros pratti.

Behaviors and auditory physiological responses of some species of echolocating bats remain unaffected after exposure to intense noise, but information on the underlying mechanisms remains limited. Here, we studied whether the vocalization-induced middle ear muscle (MEM) contractions (MEM reflex) and auditory fovea contributed to the unimpaired auditory sensitivity of constant frequency-frequency modulation (CF-FM) bats after exposure to broad-band intense noise. The vocalizations of the CF-FM bat, Hipposideros pratti, were inhibited through anesthesia to eliminate the vocalization-induced MEM

Rapid detection of bat coronaviruses from fecal samples using loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay in the field.

The global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the critical need for effective viral diagnostics. Although polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a well-established nucleotide amplification technique, its limitations, such as the need for expensive equipment and skilled technicians, have led to the exploration of alternative methods, including loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). Bats, as a crucial natural reservoir of coronaviruses (CoVs), particularly Scotophilus bat coronavirus 512 (Scotophilus bat-CoV 512) prevalent among Taiwan's bat population, are the focus of this stud

Microseconds-level coding of echo delay in the auditory brainstem of an FM-echolocating bat.

Echolocating big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) detect changes in ultrasonic echo delay with an acuity as sharp as 1 µs or less. How this perceptual feat is accomplished in the nervous system remains unresolved. Here, we examined the precision of latency registration (latency jitter) in neural population responses as a possible mechanism underlying the bat's hyperacuity. We recorded local field potentials in the cochlear nucleus and inferior colliculus of anesthetized big brown bats to sequences of sounds consisting of a simulated frequency-modulated broadcast followed, at various echo delays,

mAb therapy controls CNS-resident lyssavirus infection via a CD4 T cell-dependent mechanism.

Infections with rabies virus (RABV) and related lyssaviruses are uniformly fatal once virus accesses the central nervous system (CNS) and causes disease signs. Current immunotherapies are thus focused on the early, pre-symptomatic stage of disease, with the goal of peripheral neutralization of virus to prevent CNS infection. Here, we evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of F11, an anti-lyssavirus human monoclonal antibody (mAb), on established lyssavirus infections. We show that a single dose of F11 limits viral load in the brain and reverses disease signs following infection with a lethal dose

Mapping of Ebola virus spillover: Suitability and seasonal variability at the landscape scale.

The unexpected Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa in 2014 involving the Zaire ebolavirus made clear that other regions outside Central Africa, its previously documented niche, were at risk of future epidemics. The complex transmission cycle and a lack of epidemiological data make mapping areas at risk of the disease challenging. We used a Geographic Information System-based multicriteria evaluation (GIS-MCE), a knowledge-based approach, to identify areas suitable for Ebola virus spillover to humans in regions of Guinea, Congo and Gabon where Ebola viruses already emerged. We identified enviro

Post-natal development of the envelope following response to amplitude modulated sounds in the bat Phyllostomus discolor.

Bats use a large repertoire of calls for social communication, which are often characterized by temporal amplitude and frequency modulations. As bats are considered to be among the few mammalian species capable of vocal learning, the perception of temporal sound modulations should be crucial for juvenile bats to develop social communication abilities. However, the post-natal development of auditory processing of temporal modulations has not been investigated in bats, so far. Here we use the minimally invasive technique of recording auditory brainstem responses to measure the envelope following

Isolation of Angola-like Marburg virus from Egyptian rousette bats from West Africa.

Marburg virus (MARV) causes sporadic outbreaks of severe Marburg virus disease (MVD). Most MVD outbreaks originated in East Africa and field studies in East Africa, South Africa, Zambia, and Gabon identified the Egyptian rousette bat (ERB; Rousettus aegyptiacus) as a natural reservoir. However, the largest recorded MVD outbreak with the highest case-fatality ratio happened in 2005 in Angola, where direct spillover from bats was not  shown. Here, collaborative studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Njala University, University of California, Davis USAID-PREDICT, and the Univ

Host conservation through their parasites: molecular surveillance of vector-borne microorganisms in bats using ectoparasitic bat flies.

Most vertebrates host a wide variety of haematophagous parasites, which may play an important role in the transmission of vector-borne microorganisms to hosts. Surveillance is usually performed by collecting blood and/or tissue samples from vertebrate hosts. There are multiple methods to obtain samples, which can be stored for decades if properly kept. However, blood sampling is considered an invasive method and may possibly be harmful to the sampled individual. In this study, we investigated the use of ectoparasites as a tool to acquire molecular information about the presence and diversity o

Identification of Cryptosporidium bat genotypes XVI-XVIII in bats from Brazil.

Cryptosporidiosis is an emergent zoonotic disease caused by the globally distributed protozoa Cryptosporidium spp. Although several Cryptosporidium studies related to humans and many animal species have been published, there are still limited studies on the epidemiology of Cryptosporidium infection in bats. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp. and to perform the molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium species and genotypes in fecal samples from bats in an urban area of the municipality of Araçatuba, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Nested PCR targeting

What's the risk? Identifying potential human pathogens within grey-headed flying foxes faeces.

Pteropus poliocephalus (grey-headed flying foxes) are recognised vectors for a range of potentially fatal human pathogens. However, to date research has primarily focused on viral disease carriage, overlooking bacterial pathogens, which also represent a significant human disease risk. The current study applied 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, community analysis and a multi-tiered database OTU picking approach to identify faecal-derived zoonotic bacteria within two colonies of P. poliocephalus from Victoria, Australia. Our data show that sequences associated with Enterobacteriaceae (62.8% ± 24.7%)

Antibody Responses to Marburg Virus in Egyptian Rousette Bats and Their Role in Protection against Infection.

Egyptian rousette bats (ERBs) are reservoir hosts for the Marburg virus (MARV). The immune dynamics and responses to MARV infection in ERBs are poorly understood, and limited information exists on the role of antibodies in protection of ERBs against MARV infection. Here, we determine the duration of maternal immunity to MARV in juvenile ERBs, and evaluate the duration of the antibody response to MARV in bats naturally or experimentally infected with the virus. We further explore whether antibodies in previously naturally exposed bats is fully protective against experimental reinfection with MA

Bat rabies in Washington State: Temporal-spatial trends and risk factors for zoonotic transmission (2000-2017).

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a zoonotic viral disease that can affect all mammals. In the United States, the majority of human rabies cases are caused by bats, which are the only known reservoirs for rabies virus (RABV) in Washington State. We sought to characterize bat RABV epidemiology in Washington among bats submitted by the public for RABV testing. METHODS: We examined temporal and spatial trends in RABV positivity (% positive) for taxonomically identified bats submitted to diagnostic laboratories during 2006-2017. For a subset of Myotis species, we evaluated sensitivity and predictive value po
