BACKGROUND: Pure elbow dislocation in children under 10 is very rare, as injuries typically involve physeal or avulsion fractures. Early diagnosis and reduction are essential to avoid complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old boy sustained a posterior elbow dislocation after a fall. Radiographs confirmed a pure dislocation with no fracture. Closed reduction, brief immobilisation, and early mobilisation led to full, pain-free recovery by 6 weeks.
CONCLUSION: Pure elbow dislocation in young children is exceptional. Immediate reduction, short immobilisation, and early motion provide excell

Fracture-dislocations of the hip is the result of high-energy trauma which necessitates urgent reduction. Closed reduction is usually attempted first and if failed, open reduction is indicated and may require more than one surgical approach. However, there is also the option of managing it with vector traction. This case report details the treatment of a middle-aged gentleman who sustained a left hip central dislocation which was gradually reduced with vector traction prior to surgery and in doing so, diminished the risk of him developing several potentially debilitating complications known to

CASE: We report the case of a 34-year-old woman with a chronic right volar dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) and associated ulnar styloid fracture. The patient presented 1 month after a dog bite injury with wrist pain and limited range of motion, and radiographs demonstrated volar DRUJ dislocation. Closed reduction was unsuccessful, and thus, open reduction was performed.
CONCLUSION: Isolated volar DRUJ dislocations in the absence of fractures are easy to misdiagnose on plain radiographs. We present our surgical technique and fixation algorithm for open reduction and stabiliza

Peritalar dislocation is a term that has been described as an injury involving a simultaneous dislocation to both the subtalar and talonavicular joints without a fracture of talar neck or tibiotalar disruption. It often results from high-energy trauma but may also result from sports injuries. It occurs most frequently with a medial dislocation and less frequently with a lateral, anterior, or posterior dislocation. The treatment for most peritalar dislocations is closed reduction, although surgical intervention may be a requirement in cases where reduction is unobtainable. We present a rare lat

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment for pediatric supracondylar humeral fractures accompanied with a pink pulseless hand is controversial. Some clinicians recommend close observation after closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of the fractures, while some recommend surgical exploration if the radial pulse is unpalpable. The present study aimed to analyze the benefits and outcomes of close observation for treating pediatric supracondylar humeral fractures with a pink pulseless hand.
METHODS: Thirteen consecutive children presenting with a pink pulseless hand following supracondylar humeral f

CASE: A 90-year-old woman with osteoporosis sustained a right intertrochanteric fracture and underwent closed reduction and internal fixation with a Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation (PFNA). During preaugmentation assessment, radiopaque contrast injected through the PFNA blade-intended to exclude intra-articular communication-unexpectedly leaked into surrounding vasculature, indicating potential intravascular access. Cement injection was aborted, and the patient recovered uneventfully under a multidisciplinary fragility fracture care pathway.
CONCLUSION: This is the reported case of intravas

CASE: We describe a 10-year-old girl who sustained an anterior radial head dislocation with ulnar plastic deformation. Closed reduction under sedation failed to maintain radial head alignment. A novel technique of ulnar contour plating without osteotomy was used for definitive stabilization. In contrast to using a traditional ulnar osteotomy, this case highlights a unique technique for treating pediatric Monteggia fracture-dislocation equivalents with ulnar plastic deformation. At the 28-month follow-up, successful clinical and radiographic outcomes were observed.
CONCLUSION: Contour plating

Traumatic posterior atlantoaxial dislocation (PAAD) without detection of a fracture of the upper cervical spine is a very rare injury that usually occurs in younger patients and in most cases leads to immediate death due to distraction of the spinal cord. In contrast, the present case describes this injury in a female geriatric patient at the age of 75 years. In the literature there are also clinical case reports, where traumatic PAAD without a fracture did not result in neurological deficits and where initially existing neurological deficits were completely reversible through closed or open r

Traumatic injury to the subtalar joint occurs during subtalar dislocations, talar and calcaneal fractures, and fracture-dislocations. After closed reduction of subtalar dislocations, peripheral talar or calcaneal fractures need to be ruled out by computed tomography scanning. In fractures and fracture-dislocations of the talus and calcaneus involving the subtalar joint, anatomic reconstruction of joint congruity is essential for functional rehabilitation. Failure to anatomically reduce the subtalar joint potentially leads to chronic instability, subtalar arthritis and posttraumatic hindfoot de

Subtalar dislocation is the simultaneous dislocation of the distal articulations of the talus at both the talocalcaneal and talonavicular joints. It can occur in any direction and can always produce significant deformity. The medial dislocation is most common. Less common presentations are lateral, anterior, and posterior dislocations. These dislocations are associated with osteochondral fractures. Closed reduction and immobilization remain the mainstays of treatment. Proper radiographs and computed tomography scan confirm the postreduction alignment stability of subtalar joints and intraartic

An exceptional case of posterior dislocation of the ulna at the elbow, associated with fracture of the radial shaft, is reported. Diagnosis was established with anteroposterior and lateral radiographs of the forearm, elbow and wrist. Treatment consisted of closed reduction of the ulnar dislocation and open reduction and internal fixation of the radius with an AO plate. A long arm cast was applied for 3 weeks with the elbow held at 90 degrees. Six months later full function of the limb had been achieved.

One hundred two children with acute Monteggia lesions treated over a 25 year period were reviewed. Using the Bado classification system, type 1 (53%) and type 3 (26%) fractures were the most common. The type 1 equivalent injury associated with a proximal radius fracture is more common in children than previously reported. The majority of injuries could be treated with closed reduction, except the type 1 equivalent lesions, which required operative treatment in 10 of 14 children. Varus angulation of the ulna was the most common deformity after closed treatment. Nerve injuries occurred in 11% of

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Management of pediatric distal forearm fractures ranges from no or simple immobilization to surgical fixation. Treatment decisions depend on age and fracture severity, but practices vary widely across countries. As surgical intervention has increased internationally, we aimed to investigate national trends in incidence and treatment of pediatric distal forearm fractures in Denmark from 1999-2018 Methods: We conducted a population-based register study of children aged 0-15 with distal forearm fractures (S525 + S526) registered in the Danish National Patient Registry from

PURPOSE: Floating knee injury is uncommon yet challenging problem. The situation is more complicated by presence of infection, open comminuted fractures, and late presentation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the closed reduction techniques by circular external fixation in a single stage to treat patients having infected neglected floating knee injuries.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 19 patients with a mean age of 34.4 years. The average duration from trauma to surgery was 51.1 days. All patients had at least one infected open fracture. According to Fraser's classification,

The Kuntscher nail, once a pioneering solution for femoral shaft fracture fixation, has largely fallen out of use with the emergence of modern interlocking intramedullary systems. However, retained Kuntscher nails may still be encountered in older patients and can pose significant technical challenges when removal is required, especially in cases of incarceration. Standard closed extraction methods are often ineffective, necessitating alternative surgical strategies. This case report describes a novel and practical technique for the successful extraction of an incarcerated Kuntscher nail in a

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections are one of the more common major complications of elbow fracture surgery and can contribute to other adverse outcomes, prolonged hospital stays, and increased healthcare costs.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked: (1) What are the factors associated with a surgical site infection after elbow fracture surgery? (2) When taking the subset of closed elbow fractures only, what are the factors associated with a surgical site infection? (3) What are the common organisms isolated from an elbow infection after open treatment?

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive closed reduction and internal fixation of pelvic fractures represents a globally recognized challenge. The prerequisite for minimally invasive screw fixation in pelvic fractures lies in establishing screw pathways through fracture reduction. The advancement of robotic technology provides an intelligent solution for achieving minimally invasive closed reduction and internal fixation of pelvic fractures. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the medical records of 50 pelvic fracture patients who underwent surgical treatment at Foshan Hospital of Tradit

Cervical facet injuries, though less common than other spinal injuries, represent a subset of subaxial cervical spine injuries and can present significant challenges in terms of diagnosis, management, and outcomes. A major concern with cervical facet fracture is identifying instability patterns that may necessitate surgical stabilization. Particularly in cases of cervical facet fracture dislocations, there remains controversy regarding requirements for closed reduction, timing, surgical approach, need for preoperative MRI, and method of fixation. This review article aims to provide a thorough

CASE: A 2-year-old male child presented as a polytrauma after having been run over by a motor vehicle. His orthopaedic injuries included a pelvic ring injury, a displaced subtrochanteric femur fracture, and a clavicle fracture. His pelvic ring injury ultimately required open reduction with suture fixation after failure of closed management.
CONCLUSION: Pelvic ring injuries are relatively uncommon in young children, and even more rarely do they require surgical intervention. We detail the case of one such patient who required open management of his anteroposterior compression II pelvic ring in

Elbow dislocations associated with a medial epicondyle fracture and ulnar nerve palsy are uncommon injuries. We present the case of an 11-year-old girl with an elbow dislocation treated by closed manual reduction. The medial epicondyle fracture was missed initially until she developed an ulnar nerve palsy 2 months later. Intraoperatively we discovered the bony epicondyle piercing the joint capsule and compressing the ulnar nerve. Removal of the bony fragment relieved her symptoms and she returned to normal activities at 1 year follow-up. We would like to highlight this rare occurrence and pres
