Feasibility trial of a self-help digital intervention for functional cognitive disorder.

Functional cognitive disorder is the cognitive subtype of functional neurological disorders. Symptoms are associated with a high level of distress and typically arise due to various risk factors including abnormal focused attention, high memory expectations and poor metacognition. Easily accessible specialized treatments for functional cognitive disorder are needed. Digital interventions are less costly and scalable and allow individuals to engage in self-care in a flexible manner. In this study, we aimed to (i) evaluate the feasibility and safety of a novel self-help digital intervention base

Effects of multicomponent exercise on global cognitive function, executive function, and brain-derived neurotrophic factors in older adults with mild cognitive impairment: a systematic review and three-level meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the effects of multicomponent exercise on global cognitive function, executive function, and brain-der … ects of multicomponent exercise on global cognition. With respect to executive function subdomains, cognitive flexibility was significantly improved (g = 0.437, 95% CI [0.112, 0.761], p = 0.014), whereas working memory and inhibitory control did not reach statistical significance. DISCUSSION: The overall methodological quality of the included studies was moderate; how …

Effect of walking slope on cognitive performance. Electrophysiological evidence of dual-task interference.

The neural basis of cognitive-motor dual-tasking (CMDT), which involves the simultaneous performance of motor and cognitive tasks, has received increasing attention. However, the electrophysiological impact of walking complexity on concurrent cognitive performance remains unclear. This study examined how walking slope modulates cognitive performance and event-related potentials during a visuomotor discrimination task requiring a simple manual keypress response to target stimuli while walking on a treadmill. Twenty healthy adults (20-36 years) completed the task under three slope conditions (do

Effective connectivity within the frontoparietal control network differentiates cognitive control and working memory.

Cognitive control and working memory rely upon a common fronto-parietal network that includes the inferior frontal junction (IFJ), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), pre-supplementary motor area/dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (pSMA/dACC), and intraparietal sulcus (IPS). This network is able to flexibly adapt its function in response to changing behavioral goals, mediating a wide range of cognitive demands. Here we apply dynamic causal modeling to functional magnetic resonance imaging data to characterize task-related alterations in the strength of network interactions across distinct co

Raphe nuclei in cognition: A network-level framework for behavioral-state control.

Adaptive behavior requires organisms to maintain, update, and switch between behavioral states as environmental conditions change. The raphe nuclei (RN), best known as a major source of forebrain serotonin, have long been linked to arousal, inhibition, patience, affect, and flexibility, but these functions have often been considered separately. Here, we argue that recent advances in circuit tracing, cell-type-specific manipulation, high-resolution neuroimaging and neurostimulation, and computational modeling support a more integrated view in which RN are embedded within distributed cortico-sub

DYRK1A-haploinsufficiency in mice causes autistic-like features and febrile seizures.

Mutations and copy number variants affecting DYRK1A gene encoding the dual-specificity tyrosine phosphorylation-regulated kinase 1A are among the most frequent genetic causes of neurodevelopmental disorders including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) associated with microcephaly, febrile seizures and severe speech acquisition delay. Here we developed a mouse model harboring a frame-shift mutation in Dyrk1a resulting in a protein truncation and elimination of its kinase activity site. Dyrk1a+/- mice showed significant impairments in cognition and cognitive flexibility, communicative ultrasonic voc…

Executive functioning in children with ASD: an analysis of the BRIEF.

The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functions (BRIEF) screens for executive function deficits in 5- to 18-year-olds. Data of three autism subgroups, according to DSM-IV-TR criteria (N = 35 Autistic Disorder, N = 27 Asperger's Disorder and N = 65 PDD-NOS), were analyzed. The total group has elevated scores on almost all BRIEF scales. The Shift scale is clinically elevated, reflecting a deficit in cognitive flexibility. The BRIEF scales are not found to discriminate among the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) subgroups. The relation between BRIEF and IQ is complex. Possible influencing facto…

Operant House: A versatile open-source platform for automated operant conditioning testing of mice in home cages.

Operant conditioning is a powerful method for probing cognitive functions, yet its widespread use is constrained by low throughput, labor-intensive procedures, and high costs. Here, we developed "Operant House," a low-cost, programmable device equipped with a touchscreen, retractable levers, and a water-reward port, designed to enable automated operant conditioning with minimal experimenter intervention in individually housed mice within their home cages. Although individual home-cage testing requires careful attention to animal welfare, the system permits continuous monitoring through live ca

Distinct cognitive and functional connectivity features from healthy cohorts can identify clinical obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Improving diagnostic accuracy of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using models of brain imaging data is a key goal of the field, but this … he disorder. Further, the meta-matching model relied upon estimates of cognitive functions, such as cognitive flexibility and inhibition, to successfully predict OCD. These findings suggest that variability in non-clinical brain and behavioural features can discriminate clinical OCD status. These results support a dimensional and transdiagnostic conceptualisation of th …

Exploring role of natural compounds in molecular alterations associated with brain ageing: A perspective towards nutrition for ageing brain.

Aging refers to complete deterioration of physiological integrity and function. By midcentury, adults over 60 years of age and children under 15 years will begin to outnumber people in working age. This shift will bring multiple global challenges for economy, health, and society. Eventually, aging is a natural process playing a vital function in growth and development during pediatric stage, maturation during adult stage, and functional depletion. Tissues experience negative consequences with enhanced genomic instability, deregulated nutrient sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, and decline in

Managing emotions in panic disorder: A systematic review of studies related to emotional intelligence, alexithymia, emotion regulation, and coping.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Panic disorder is defined by recurring and unexpected panic attacks, accompanied by anticipatory anxiety about future attacks and their consequences. This generally involves avoiding situations and behaviors that can produce panic attacks (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013). Among anxiety disorders, panic disorder is associated with some of the greatest burdens in terms of personal suffering, occupational disability, and societal cost. The objective of this article is to systematically identify and review the empirical literature on emotional management pr
