Community Rates of IgG4 Antibodies to Ascaris Haemoglobin Reflect Changes in Community Egg Loads Following Mass Drug Administration.

BACKGROUND: Conventional diagnostic methods for human ascariasis are based on the detection of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs in stool samples. However, studies of ascariasis in pigs have shown that the prevalence and the number of eggs detected in the stool do not correlate well with exposure of the herd to the parasite. On the other hand, an ELISA test measuring antibodies to Ascaris suum haemoglobin (AsHb) has been shown to be useful for estimating transmission intensity on pig farms. In this study, we further characterized the AsHb antigen and screened samples from a population-based study cond

Responding to a measles outbreak in a Pacific island community in western Sydney: community interviews led to church-based immunization clinics.

INTRODUCTION: There are large Pacific island communities in western and south-western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. In 2011 and 2012, measles outbreaks disproportionally affected children and youth within these communities. The objectives of this study were to explore barriers to immunization in a Pacific island community from the perspectives of community members and health professionals and to conduct a pilot programme whereby immunization catch-up clinics were held in a Samoan church in western Sydney. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with Pacific island community members (n = 12)

Community-partnered cluster-randomized comparative effectiveness trial of community engagement and planning or resources for services to address depression disparities.

BACKGROUND: Depression contributes to disability and there are ethnic/racial disparities in access and outcomes of care. Quality improvement (QI) programs for depression in primary care improve outcomes relative to usual care, but health, social and other community-based service sectors also support clients in under-resourced communities. Little is known about effects on client outcomes of strategies to implement depression QI across diverse sectors. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of Community Engagement and Planning (CEP) and Resources for Services (RS) to implement depression QI on

Endovascular treatment of complicated ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysms based on the anatomical features of the anterior communicating artery complex.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular therapy of complicated ruptured anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysms is difficult due to their small size and unfavorable shape. AIM: Based on the anatomical features of the ACoA complex, we investigated the feasibility and efficacy of different coil embolism strategies for complicated ACoA aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with complicated ruptured ACoA aneurysms received endovascular treatment. Aneurysm sac plus ACoA embolism or ACoA coil embolism were performed if the bilateral A1 segment was normally developed or unilateral A1 segment d

Quality and safety of integrated community case management of malaria using rapid diagnostic tests and pneumonia by community health workers.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the quality and safety of having community health workers (CHWs) in rural Zambia use rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and provide integrated management of malaria and pneumonia. DESIGN/METHODS: In the context of a cluster-randomized controlled trial of two models for community-based management of malaria and/or non-severe pneumonia in children under 5 years old, CHWs in the intervention arm were trained to use RDTs, follow a simple algorithm for classification and treat malaria with artemether-lumefantrine (AL) and pneumonia with amoxicillin. CHW records were reviewed to as

Are gay communities dying or just in transition? Results from an international consultation examining possible structural change in gay communities.

This study sought to identify how urban gay communities are undergoing structural change, reasons for that change, and implications for HIV prevention planning. Key informants (N=29) at the AIDS Impact Conference from 17 cities in 14 countries completed surveys and participated in a facilitated structured dialog about if gay communities are changing, and if so, how they are changing. In all cities, the virtual gay community was identified as currently larger than the offline physical community. Most cities identified that while the gay population in their cities appeared stable or growing, the

The reprofessionalisation of community pharmacy? An exploration of attitudes to extended roles for community pharmacists amongst pharmacists and General Practioners in the United Kingdom.

In the light of recent developments within the British National Health Service some sociologists have suggested that the medical profession's status is under threat. They have specified a range of factors contributing to this state of affairs, such as the new consumerism; however, it is thought that attempts by other, related occupations at reprofessionalisation are particularly significant in this trend. It may be possible to understand recent initiatives at extending community pharmacists' role within this framework. This paper suggests that while community pharmacy is developing strategies

Implementation of mobile medical units for naloxone distribution and MOUD linkage in Ohio's HEALing Communities Study: a community case study.

UNLABELLED: Naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal drug, and medication for opioid use disorder have been found to effectively combat opioid-related overdose and death. However, cost and access remain considerable barriers for many individuals at the highest risk of opioid-related overdoses. Similarly, many struggle to access medications for opioid use disorder because of the limited availability of treatment facilities and inadequate transportation options. Within the broader HEALing Communities Study, some Ohio communities elected to use mobile medical units to support delivery of naloxone an

Training Community-Academic Teams to Use Low-Cost Air Monitors: A Mixed Method Evaluation of the RISE Communities Program.

Concerns regarding poor air quality in communities experiencing disproportionately high levels of air pollution frequently motivate formation of community-academic partnerships. Low-cost air monitors can assess air pollution but require specific training. The RISE Communities program was created to support partnerships in air quality training and community-engaged research. The RISE Communities program in-person training took place in Cincinnati, OH, in summers 2023 and 2024. The training included hands-on workshops, lectures, and monthly webinars with continued expert guidance for one year fo

Synthetic microbial community promotes seedling growth of Chinese fir via dissolving phosphorus and modifying rhizosphere microbial community.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for plant growth, yet its availability in soil is severely constrained by fixation into insoluble forms that plants cannot directly utilize. Although phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSM) represent a promising strategy to mobilize soil P, the functional potential of endophytic PSM and their synthetic consortia in promoting tree growth remains largely underexplored. In this study, endophytic bacteria were isolated from the roots of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata). Among them, 42 isolates were screened for phosphate-solubilizing activity on med

[Communication in later life under institutional conditions : Professional perspectives on communication of ageing people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities].

BACKGROUND: For people with (profound) intellectual and multiple disabilities verbal language is often not the primary means of communication. Communication is closely tied to familiar persons and the interpretation of individual forms of expression. In later life health-related changes, the loss of social relationships and institutional transitions can substantially impair communication. OBJECTIVE: Based on group interviews with professionals this paper examines the significance of communication partners, the professional and institutional prerequisites for successful communication in later

The sequential cohort randomized clinical trial: A study design for community-engaged clinical research in a rural American Indian community.

Health disparities facing American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations warrant effective behavioral health interventions that are grounded in culture and Indigenous worldviews, but AI/AN people remain underrepresented in clinical trials. Rigorous scientific methods are needed to determine the efficacy of new interventions, particularly in small rural communities with high treatment need and low access to care. However, many AI/AN communities prefer study designs that ensure all participants receive an intervention, and logistical constraints, such as small population sizes and limited

Community Code Blue: The Sydney Jewish Community's Medical Preparations and Response to the Bondi Beach Terror Attack of December 2025.

Ethnocultural minority communities may require specialised emergency response frameworks during mass casualty incidents (MCIs). This article describes the Sydney Jewish community's preparation for, and medical response to, the Bondi Beach terror attack of 14 December 2025. We present a timeline of events during the attack and outline the immediate medical response and recovery actions undertaken in the first hours and days following the incident, including first-hand accounts of responders from the scene. Alongside this account, we present a novel response model implemented by the New South Wa

Conditions Supporting Autonomous Information and Communication Technology Use Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Qualitative Content Analysis.

Information and communication technology (ICT) is increasingly promoted to support health and participation among older adults. However, the conditions under which older adults perceive ICT as usable in their daily lives remain unclear. This qualitative descriptive study explored the conditions referenced by community-dwelling older adults when judging whether ICT could be used in everyday life after completing an ICT-based occupational therapy program. Focus group discussions were conducted with 20 participants and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Six interrelated conditions were

Towards caring communities: A community-based qualitative inquiry of family caregiving for people who use drugs in rural settings.

BACKGROUND: The unregulated toxic drug supply has had a disproportionate impact on rural communities across Canada, yet most health and social interventions target urban settings. Drawing on the Care Collective's (2020) work on universal care, families often provide care within the larger context of "careless" communities and governments that prioritize economic productivity over relational wellbeing. Although there is a growing body of research on care and caregiving experiences, little is known about the experiences of family caregivers of people who use drugs (PWUD) in rural settings. METH

Community-Based Impact of Community-Based Antenatal Care Models on Prevention and Early Detection of Obstetric Complications: A Systematic Review.

Obstetric complications remain a leading cause of preventable maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Persistent barriers to facility-based antenatal care (ANC), including geographic remoteness, transportation costs, socio-cultural norms, and fragmented health systems, have prompted the large-scale expansion of community-based ANC models designed to bring preventive and early-detection services directly to underserved populations. This systematic review evaluated the impact of community-based ANC models on the prevention and early detection of
