Tics and Tourette Syndrome: A Literature Review of Etiological, Clinical, and Pathophysiological Aspects.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a condition characterized by tics produced because of neuropsychiatric malfunctioning occurring in childhood, which becomes less severe in adulthood, followed by a difference in the severity of tics between two persons. TS is a diverse variable in which symptoms vary in different patients. It is associated with comorbidities like obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and depression, and hampers the quality of life. Comorbid disorders must be investigated and treated as part of the clinical approach for all TS patients. C

Psychiatric symptoms and syndromes transcending diagnostic boundaries in Indian multiplex families: The cohort of ADBS study.

Syndromes of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, substance use disorders and Alzheimer's dementia are highly heritable. About 10-20% of subjects have another affected first degree relative (FDR), and thus represent a 'greater' genetic susceptibility. We screened 3583 families to identify 481 families with multiple affected members, assessed 1406 individuals in person, and collected information systematically about other relatives. Within the selected families, a third of all FDRs were affected with serious mental illness. Although similar diagnoses aggregated within

A Clinical Staging Model for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Is It Ready for Prime Time?

Recent changes to the diagnostic classification of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), including its removal from the anxiety/neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorders chapters of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) and International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11), are based on growing evidence of unique pathogenic signatures and linked diagnostic and treatment approaches. In this review, we build on these recent developments and propose a 'clinical staging model' of OCD that integrates the severity of symptoms and phase

Ethical issues in deep brain stimulation.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is currently used to treat neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia, and is explored as an experimental treatment for psychiatric disorders like major depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. This mini review discusses ethical issues in DBS treatment and research, as they have been discussed in the medical and ethical literature. With regard to DBS treatment, the most important issues are balancing risks and benefits and ensuring respect for the autonomous wish of the patient. This implies special attention to patient sel

Autistic-like behavior in CHARGE syndrome.

Children with CHARGE syndrome frequently exhibit moderate to severe behavior difficulties, and are often diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit disorder, Tourette syndrome, and autism. Hartshorne and Cypher (2004) surveyed parents of 100 children with CHARGE worldwide and confirmed the prevalence of behaviors that are associated with these disorders. They also found behaviors that could be described as typical of persons who are deafblind. The present study examined whether the autistic-like behaviors of children with CHARGE are more similar to those of children who ar

ESMvis: a tool for visualizing individual Experience Sampling Method (ESM) data.

PURPOSE: The experience sampling method (ESM) is used for intensive longitudinal time-series data collection during normal daily life. ESM data give information on momentary affect, activities and (social) context of, for example, patients suffering from mental disorders, and allows for person-specific feedback reports. However, current personalized feedback reports only display a selection of measured variables, and typically involve only summary statistics, thus not reflecting the dynamic fluctuations in affect and its influencing factors. To address this shortcoming, we developed a tool for

The reliability of the Brazilian version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI 2.1).

The objective of the present study was to determine the reliability of the Brazilian version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview 2.1 (CIDI 2.1) in clinical psychiatry. The CIDI 2.1 was translated into Portuguese using WHO guidelines and reliability was studied using the inter-rater reliability method. The study sample consisted of 186 subjects from psychiatric hospitals and clinics, primary care centers and community services. The interviewers consisted of a group of 13 lay and three non-lay interviewers submitted to the CIDI training. The average interview time was 2 h and 30

Optimizing outcomes in psilocybin therapy: Considerations in participant evaluation and preparation.

Recent studies have demonstrated the promise of psilocybin therapies in creating positive changes for those with poor mental health across multiple diagnostic categories, including major depressive disorder (MDD), end-of-life anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). While there may be a large population that is eligible to participate in psilocybin therapy based on psychiatric diagnosis and medical clearance, little attention has been given to intrapersonal and interpersonal factors that might influence patient's readiness (i.e., eligibility and capacity) for psychedelic interventions

Targeting redox regulation to treat substance use disorder using N‐acetylcysteine.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a chronic relapsing disorder characterized by transitioning from acute drug reward to compulsive drug use. Despite the heavy personal and societal burden of SUDs, current treatments are limited and unsatisfactory. For this reason, a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying addiction is required. Altered redox status, primarily due to drug-induced increases in dopamine metabolism, is a unifying feature of abused substances. In recent years, knowledge of the effects of oxidative stress in the nervous system has evolved from strictly neurotoxic to include

[COVID-19 and telepsychiatry: a challenge for mental health management].

INTRODUCTION: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person psychiatric care decreased, but mental disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive symptoms and insomnia increased. Our objective was to describe the usefulness, advantages, disadvantages and limitations of telemedicine used in psychiatric patients' clinical care before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A critical search was carried out on platforms such as PubMed, Cochrane, Lilacs and academic Google, in addition to an in-depth assessment of all the primary studies that answer our

Re-conceptualization of anorexia nervosa psychopathology: A network analysis study in adolescents with short duration of the illness.

OBJECTIVE: Research evidence suggests the need to identify treatments based on a more precise characterization of psychopathology and psychiatric comorbidity in anorexia nervosa. Network analysis provides a new method to conceptualize psychopathology. We use this approach to investigate the relationships between eating disorder and general psychiatric symptoms in adolescents with anorexia nervosa. METHODS: Four-hundred and five adolescents with anorexia nervosa and illness duration less than 3 years were consecutively recruited from those admitted to inpatient treatment. They completed the fo

A cross-sectional study on the relationship between interoceptive sensitivity and somatic symptoms in young bipolar disorder patients.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) with somatic symptoms is a prevalent and refractory clinical syndrome in young patients. Interoception is an important mechanism for coordinating internal physiological and mood states to maintain individual homeostasis, and its mediating physiological systems and brain network dynamics undergo significant development from adolescence to young adulthood. It remains unclear whether interoception is altered and how it relates to somatic and mood symptoms in youths with BD. METHODS: This study recruited 71 youths (aged 14-25) with BD during maintenance status an

[Pathological hoarding by children and adolescents].

BACKGROUND: There is a dearth of knowledge and understanding concerning hoarding by children and adolescents. Psychiatrists need to know more about the phenomenon of hoarding since it can be a marker of psychopathology and it sometimes is symptomatic of a psychiatric disorder. AIM: To review hoarding from an epidemiological and psychopathological perspective and to discuss it in relation to the developmental aspect of the first object acquisition: the transitional object. METHOD: We conducted a literature search in PubMed, Medline, PsycINFO and the Cochranedatabase using primarily the search

Psychometric properties of the Borderline Symptom List (BSL).

BACKGROUND: The Borderline Symptom List (BSL) was developed as a self-rating instrument to specifically quantify borderline-typical symptomatology. The items are based on the criteria of the DSM-IV, the Diagnostic Interview for Borderline Personality Disorder - revised version, the opinions of clinical experts and borderline patients. The psychometric properties and validity of the BSL have been investigated in several studies. SAMPLING AND METHODS: A total of 380 borderline patients and 204 healthy controls scored the items. A factor analysis of the BSL items suggests the following subscales

Invasive brain mapping identifies personalized therapeutic neuromodulation targets that suppress OCD network activity.

Deep brain stimulation has been used to treat severe, refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with variable outcomes across multiple anatomical targets. To overcome these limitations, we developed an invasive brain mapping paradigm in which electrodes were implanted across the OCD cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit. We then performed extensive stimulation mapping during a multi-day inpatient stay to identify personalized therapeutic targets and characterize their downstream circuit effects. We found two targets within the right ventral capsule (VC) that acutely reduced OCD symptom

Heart-focused anxiety, illness beliefs, and behavioral impairment: comparing healthy heart-anxious patients with cardiac and surgical inpatients.

Psychological features and complaints of persons presenting to medical settings with heart-focused anxiety and noncardiac chest pain are poorly understood. Comparing 20 healthy heart-anxious patients to cardiac and surgical inpatients and nonpatient controls, we found that healthy heart-anxious patients (a) were as afraid of chest pain and heart palpitations as inpatients with heart disease, (b) were as incapacitated by symptoms and using medical services as much as both inpatient groups; and (c) reported higher levels of cardiac disease conviction, heart awareness, and behaviors designed to p

Characterizing symptom presentations in children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by significant heterogeneity in symptom presentation, complicating assessment and treatment planning. This study presents item-level data on the frequency of specific OCD symptoms using the updated Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale-II (CY-BOCS-II), which includes expanded content and greater emphasis on avoidance behaviors. Participants included 101 children and adolescents (54% male; M = 12.81 years, SD = 2.81, range = 7-17) with a primary OCD diagnosis recruited from two specialty clinics. Analyses examined the cur

A Double-Track Pathway to Fast Strategy in Humans and Its Personality Correlates.

The fast-slow paradigm of life history (LH) focuses on how individuals grow, mate, and reproduce at different paces. This paradigm can contribute substantially to the field of personality and individual differences provided that it is more strictly based on evolutionary biology than it has been so far. Our study tested the existence of a fast-slow continuum underlying indicators of reproductive effort-offspring output, age at first reproduction, number and stability of sexual partners-in 1,043 outpatients with healthy to severely disordered personalities. Two axes emerged reflecting a double-t

Childhood trauma in obsessive-compulsive disorder, trichotillomania, and controls.

There is relatively little data on the link between childhood trauma and obsessive-compulsive/putative obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. The revised Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), which assesses physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as well as physical and emotional neglect, was administered to female patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; n = 74; age: 36.1 plus minus 16.3), TTM (n = 36; age: 31.8 plus minus 12.3), and a group of normal controls (n = 31; age: 21.5 plus minus 1.0). The findings showed a significantly greater severity of childhood trauma in general, and

The hallucinations of widowhood.

227 widows and 66 widowers were interviewed to determine the extent to which they had hallucinatory experiences of their dead spouse. The people interviewed formed 80.7% of all widowed people resident within a defined area, in mid-Wales, and 94.2% of those suitable, through the absence of incapacitating illness, for interview.Almost half the people interviewed had hallucinations or illusions of the dead spouse. The proportion of men and women who had these experiences was similar. The hallucinations often lasted many years but were most common during the first 10 years of widowhood. Social iso
