Bidirectional Associations of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders with Major Depressive and Anxiety Disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Mounting evidence indicates the associations of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) with depression and anxiety symptoms. However, the temporal and casual relationships between TMD and depression and between TMD and anxiety must be further clarified. METHODS: This study is a retrospective cohort analysis that employed data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database and comprised the following sub analyses: temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) as the cause of subsequent major depressive disorder (MDD) or anxiety disorders (AnxDs) and TMJD as the consequence of MDD or AnxD…

An examination of the structure of posttraumatic stress disorder in relation to the anxiety and depressive disorders.

The nature and structure of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been the subject of much interest in recent times. This research has been represented by two streams, the first representing a substantive body of work which focuses specifically on the factor structure of PTSD and the second exploring PTSD's relationship with other mood and anxiety disorders. The present study attempted to bring these two streams together by examining structural models of PTSD and their relationship with dimensions underlying other mood and anxiety disorders. PTSD, anxiety and mood disorder data from 989 inj

Prolonged Grief Disorder, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder are distinguishable syndromes.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the distinctiveness of symptoms of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We compared the fit of a one-factor model with the fit of four hierarchical models in which symptoms formed three distinct correlated higher-order dimensions, and PTSD-items were modeled in different ways. METHODS: Self-reported data were available from two samples; 572 mourners recruited via the internet and 408 mourners recruited via healthcare workers. RESULTS: In Sample 1, the unitary model did not fit the data. The four hierarchical mod

Epidemiology of the association between somatoform disorders and anxiety and depressive disorders: an update.

OBJECTIVE: To review the available epidemiological evidence on associations between somatoform disorders with anxiety and depressive disorders. RESULTS: Clinical and population-based studies have found that the co-occurrence of some types of somatoform disorders (e.g., somatization disorder, somatic-symptom-index (SSI)4,6, and pain disorder) and anxiety and depressive disorders is common. These findings may suggest either a causal relationship between these disorders or that they share some common etiological factors. For other forms of somatoform disorders, empirical evidence about co-occurr…

Should bipolar disorder be viewed as manic disorder? Implications for bipolar depression.

This paper proposes that the syndrome of mania rather than mood swings is the central distinguishing feature of bipolar disorder, which may be more appropriately viewed as manic disorder. The theoretical consequence of this change in perspective is to regard the depressive mood states as being a co-morbid condition. This may lead to a more profound and broader understanding of the variety of states of depression that complicate manic disorder. The paper also reviews diagnostic issues relating to bipolar depression. A broader approach may extend therapeutic choices, and open innovative research

Cholesterol levels in panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and major depression.

Serum plasma total cholesterol levels were measured in 85 male or female outpatients with panic disorder (PD; N=41), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD; N=23) and major depression (MD; N=21) according to DSM-IV criteria. All the patients had a mean cholesterol level within the normal range; males (N=22) and females (N=63) had approximately the same serum cholesterol levels (p >.05). No significant differences in cholesterol levels emerged between PD, GAD and MD patient groups. Both female PD and female GAD subjects had a mean cholesterol level similar to their male counterparts (p>. 05). It is

Outcome for adjustment disorder with depressed mood: comparison with other mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: A review of the research literature on the diagnostic category of adjustment disorder indicates that its construct validity has not been established. Nevertheless, the diagnosis is made frequently, with an estimated incidence of 5-21% in psychiatric consultation services for adults. METHODS: Retrospective data was used to evaluate the construct validity of the adjustment disorder diagnostic category. The data primarily consisted of SF-36 Health Status Survey responses by a large group of adult psychiatric outpatients before treatment and again six months after beginning treatment.

The kynurenine pathway in major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cerebrospinal fluid studies.

OBJECTIVES: The kynurenine (KYN) pathway has been attracting attention as a relevant pathway in schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies examining KYN pathway metabolites from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples in SZ, BD, and MDD. METHODS: The PubMed and Scopus databases were systematically searched to identify peer-reviewed case-control studies published until April 2022 that assessed KYN metabolites, namely, tryptophan (TRP), KYN, kynurenic acid (KA), quinolinic acid (QA), and 3-hydroxykynure…

Bipolar disorder predicted shorter and borderline personality disorder symptoms longer time to remission - A prospective cohort study of major depressive patients.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive episodes (MDEs) of major depressive (MDD) or bipolar disorders (BD) are frequently complicated by features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Mixed features are a hallmark of BD and affective lability of BPD, and both may markedly influence illness course. However, direct comparisons of outcome of depression in MDD, BD, and BPD are scarce. METHODS: In a cohort study based on stratified sampling, we diagnosed psychiatric MDE patients with SCID-I/P and SCID-II interviews and examined mixed symptoms using the Mix-MDE scale and borderline symptoms using the Bor

Subjects with bipolar disorder showed different reward system activation than subjects with major depressive disorder in the monetary incentive delay task.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating between bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) during the depressive episode is an important clinical challenge. Reward system abnormalities have received much attention as one of the biological underpinnings of BD and MDD, but few studies have directly compared these abnormalities in remitted and depressed states. METHODS: This was a functional MRI study using the Monetary Incentive Delay task in 65 patients (BD [n = 33], MDD [n = 32]) and 33 healthy controls (HC). Regions of interest (ROI) analysis with 21 ROIs related to reward anticipation an…

Childhood adversity modulation of central autonomic network components during cognitive regulation of emotion in major depressive disorder and borderline personality disorder.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have lifelong effects on emotional behavior and are frequent in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The Central Autonomic Network (CAN), which modulates heart rate variability (HRV), comprises brain regions that mediate emotion regulation processes. However, it remains unclear the effect of ACEs on CAN dynamics and its relationship with HRV in these disorders. We studied the effects of ACEs on the brain and HRV simultaneously, during regulation of psychological stress in 19 BPD, 20 MDD and 20 healthy controls (HC). Par…

A Real-World, Prospective, Multicenter, Single-Arm Observational Study of Duloxetine in Patients With Major Depressive Disorder or Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Background: Suboptimal treatment response during anti-depressive treatment is fairly common with the first antidepressant (AD) choice, followed by switching to another agent in the majority of cases. However, the efficacy of this strategy over continuation of the original agent is less solidly documented in real-life studies. The aim of our present study was to ascertain the effects of switching to duloxetine following inadequate response to prior ADs on general illness severity, pain, and health-related quality of life in a large sample of major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxie…

Gender differences in the associations of multiple psychiatric and chronic conditions with major depressive disorder among patients with opioid use disorder.

PURPOSE: The study examined the associations of multiple psychiatric and chronic conditions with the self-reported history of major depressive disorder (MDD) among patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) and tested whether the associations differed by gender. METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis of baseline data from a clinical trial including 1,646 participants with OUD, of which 465 had MDD. A variable cluster analysis was used to classify chronic medical and psychiatric conditions. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to estimate their associations with MDD in su…

Treatment of Symptom Clusters in Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder With the Dopamine D3/D2 Preferring Partial Agonist Cariprazine.

Cariprazine is currently approved for the treatment of patients with schizophrenia (USA and EU), and for manic, depressive, and episodes with mixed features in bipolar I disorder (USA): several randomized controlled studies have also explored its efficacy in patients with major depressive disorder. This review summarizes its current therapeutic uses and potential advantages for treating the main symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar I and major depressive disorder, considering its pharmacodynamic properties, efficacy, and tolerability. Its predominantly D3 receptor preferring affinity, with funct…

Predictive inflammatory biomarkers for change in suicidal ideation in major depressive disorder and panic disorder: A 12-week follow-up study.

Previous studies have investigated the role of inflammatory markers in suicidality of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) or panic disorder (PD). However, few studies have investigated associations between serum inflammatory cytokine levels and suicidality. We hypothesized that MDD and PD status might be significantly associated with serum inflammatory cytokines and that we could predict levels of improvement in suicide ideation intensity using serum inflammatory biomarkers in patients with MDD and PD. For this study, 41 patients with MDD, 52 patients with PD, and 59 healthy control …

Eating disorder recovery is associated with absence of major depressive disorder and substance use disorders at 22-year longitudinal follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric comorbidity is common in eating disorders (EDs) and associated with poor outcomes, including increased risk for relapse and premature death. Yet little is known about comorbidity following ED recovery. METHODS: We examined two common comorbidities, major depressive disorder (MDD) and substance use disorder (SUD), in adult women with intake diagnoses of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa who participated in a 22-year longitudinal study. One hundred and seventy-six of 228 surviving participants (77.2%) were interviewed 22 years after study entry using the Eating Disord…
